Man, I get so in my head about posting videos sometimes. Like I over think the shit out of everything and then dont want to post it. I get worried people are not going to like or get board...I dont know why I feel that way. Sometimes I feel stupid for how many videos I post of me racing without a win, but I hope I can at least shine some light on the inner workings of bike racing. Hope you enjoy bro/bro'et, sorry for the lag in uploads. PS. Jamin convinced me to post this, thanks Jamin!
People get hyped when you post a video, boredom comes when Iv'e spent the last 2 weeks going through all your old videos at least twice. ( I swear Iv'e added about 500 views to your channel lol)
I completely enjoyed this video. Your commentary is interesting, insightful, and informed with all your racing experience. I think this type of video is really helpful for all levels of racing/racers. The trouble with watching most professional bike races is the part about team tactics generally not being discussed, or at very most poorly explained where the viewer can hardly make the connection. Also, I think it's great to showcase the local amateur racing scene here in Northern CA. I hope this type of video will inspire more people to get out and try it. Good job!
Dude!! Finally! I click on your channel every single day waiting for that juicy video. Bro, it’s like a drug! You got me hooked! You can’t leave us for that long. Your videos release a huge amount of dopamine in my system. Keep the great work! Love all your videos! And don’t be so hard on yourself. Your videos are very informative! Can’t wait for the next fix.
"If the power is high it's accurate, if it's low it's not accurate." Greatest line ever! They were all way stronger than you, so 4th is a solid finish with that group.
Jamin Chep Well I can understand as VC did make you work on so many gaps. Doesn't matter, You're a powerhouse with that high endurance level. Good luck.
I really enjoy your videos and I myself have learn so much from your videos in the technical way especially on how to use power meter to strategise all my rides.
Dude!! I too!...finally clicked on the subscribe button...ever since... I can’t wait for the next video...love ‘em bro...great racing...and commentary...really learnt a lot... thanks VC.
Try to not attack from the front. Wait until you are on a long straight and attack from the back. Preferably into a corner (without crashing.) Not many people are strong enough to ride someone off their wheel on the flat. Ideally if you don't want to sprint then just follow them till 2 laps to go and hit em hard. You will get a gap and if they hesitate you will stay away.
So excited to see a VC vid in my sub box, don't leave us hanging for so long! I know it must be hard with the newborn, but any content you can put out is sick. Have you ever thought about doing more vlog type videos since you may not be able to get on the bike as much right now/ make these breakdown vids as often?
+Hunter Patten The edit time on even a whatever vlog is still pretty substantial. And the day job has been a big time later this year. I actually have a ton of footage to edit for a bunch of videos, just need to sit down and do it.
Love your videos, man. Have you ever considered adding in more of the GoPro audio? It's really fascinating to hear the riders in a race communicate with each other from an outsider's perspective. Either way, keep on keepin' on!
I enjoyed the video. Thanks for posting it. Quick tought tough: Why do you (and the other riders in the group) attack from the front? In my opinion on such a wide course your only chance to break away is to attack from the last or second to last position (to take on guy with you). Sure it reduces the chance that you get a breakaway companion but punching out of the corners on such a course is nearly an impossible move to get away. Either attack with a lot of speed difference to the guys who could/would react (guys in front), even if you have to use a bit of a "sprinters gap" (leaving room to accelarate in the slipstream), or counter over a very hard phase of racing (e.g. intermediate money prizes if you have them). Seems like riding solo for a while or the rest of the race could have been an option in a practise crit. Attacking from the front is only a good tactic if you have a way tighter course (& corners), have a teammate or lazy rider on your wheel who will let the gap open or do it in the finalish corner (because than guys a hesitating to accelerate not wanting to go to early or do the work before the sprint for others). At least that is my experience racing in Germany. But we have courses which would probably rated unridable in the US (smaller streets in city centers / cobblish / no 90° corners / street furniture - no comparison to Belgium or Netherslands tough / corners in the last 200m / ...). And "not having to close the gap" (and letting others do it) is a big difference from letting a gap open intentionally (often times you didnt follow through corners or just veered off the line refusing to hold the wheel). I know that it was your tactic to tire the other guys out, but you commentated on it like you were the "victim" but in reality you made the teams with bigger numbers in the break suffer a bit. I don't want to sound to negative. Great video! Love your content.
this is really really good! just imagine if we had something like this for a classics race. you should team up with Peter Sagan, have him video his race, and help him with the editing and commentary ;) :) Just an idea... sure u can make that happen!
Tyler, since you addressed a question directly to me, I didn't let the breakaway go in the beginning because we wanted 2 Fultons in the top 3. Wasn't going to let a break go with only one of us in there 😈
+Jamin Chep You greedy son of gun LOL. But still, that intial make up was WAY better for Fulton, so if you let it go, revs has to chase, giving you a free ride. But thanks making me post this, glad I did.
That's true, I don't know exactly what I was thinking. Or rather, I probably wasn't thinking. Just wanted to get out there and play. Didn't want to miss out on the action. Greedy indeed.
hi from Puerto Rico i love the gloves, its have to be freaking cold in the time of year we live in a tropical island sow we use short gloves all the time :) and i love you videos
Heart rate seems low compared to prior crit videos. Age catching up, lacking fitness, bad sensor, all the above? Thanks for the videos, yours are the best out there!
Maybe you don't give yourself enough credit as a sprinter. It looks like your watts were low (for you) in that sprint. Maybe you gave up a bit? Even if you lose you learn a lot sprinting at 100% so push through the line. You're so strong that you'll be wearing out the pure sprinters so never assume you are slow. Maybe I'm not reading this correctly but just a thought. Love the videos and your progression over time is inspiring.
Alexander Raimo he probably took the turn too fast and had to turn into the other side or maybe he arrived late to the practice race and decided to hop on
Perhaps u should title these vids as something/somewhat "advanced" as your jargon/slang is hard to keep up with (noted more so in the beginning) for noobs-intermeds; re: learning your tactics, thought processes, etc. That or give links to tutorials/brush-ups/explanations type vids u've already done, that they've not seen. Just sayin'. I can't stop LOL tho' at yer ".....i'm under no obligation to....." repeats. Dunno why but this tickles my sense of humor. Thanks for sharing. Beats the winter blues of limited training opps, and feeds the hope of springs' seasonal return.
Ah fair enough, did my first crit on technical circuit couple weeks back was wary of this happening. Guess there's no way to know how far you can go until you find the limit!?

The Vegan Cyclist great video, thanks for posting you’ve been silent too long.
Liam Sangaku dude same!
Liam Sangaku ditto
Keep posting brah!
"If the power is high it's accurate, if it's low it's not accurate."
Thats what I tell people too.
When you gotta race a practise crit at 6 but do the gardening at 7
ThatsSoNathan 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Seconded, as somebody just getting in to crits and little knowledge of tactics this insightful commentary is super helpful #bruh

Sick video dude, doesn't matter if you win or lose, I always get super excited to watch your videos. Best channel on youtube IMO
“He who hesitates, masturbates” 😂😂😂😂😂 epic. I’ll be using that sometimes.
Love these race commentaries. Love the race tactics. Practice race or real race, its all good. Peace Brah!
Great vid. Keep it coming! =) It's not about how you race, it's the "break down" that keeps me watching. Even though I think you raced really well ;)
What a save!!! Jamin MVP!
Thanks mate! Happy I didn't cause a huge wreck!
Jamin Chep From almost crashing to a win, you've kept your composure. You're a beast, hope to see you win a few more races.
Arjun Thanks man! Actually it was my teammate Jeremiah Root who took the win. I used every bit of energy I had to get my guys to the last corner.
Jamin Chep Well I can understand as VC did make you work on so many gaps. Doesn't matter, You're a powerhouse with that high endurance level. Good luck.
WHHHAAAT?!! You've surpassed The Cycling Maven in subscribers? Way to go.
Thanks for the vid! It’s been so long, I kept refreshing my feed hoping there would be a new treasure trove of your videos :)
Really great race man, don't beat yourself up. If you can have a few attacks and finish in the top bunch, you've had a great race.
I really enjoy your videos and I myself have learn so much from your videos in the technical way especially on how to use power meter to strategise all my rides.
Love the analysis. It's what makes your race vids interesting.
Dude!! I too!...finally clicked on the subscribe button...ever since... I can’t wait for the next video...love ‘em bro...great racing...and commentary...really learnt a lot... thanks VC.

Love the vids, especially the ones that touch on finding the balance between family, work, and cycling ..... I'm in the same boat!
great breakdown of tactics i still have a lot to learn when surfing wheels

What is up with those gloves?
hides "hairy palms." (see/hear "hesitate, masturbate" comment of his)
he lost a bet with Chad
Really like those breakdown videos! Be it a groupride or a race.
If you only posted race videos of you winning, that'd be lame.
Keep 'em coming!
Thanks
Look at this guy, riding in the drops!
Watching that guys wheel kick out made my heart jump. Broke my hip last year going down on a bend.
pz0lfs could it have been from low or high tire pressure?
THANKS FOR POSTING!!!!!!!!!!!! Great vid and a fun race! Glad I still have all my skin.
Another great video man! Fun racing with you in that one too. I was hoping to redeem myself after week 1 when I blew up halfway through.
+Mark Tucker You are a beast bro...You will be a cat 1 in less then 2 years. Your teammates are lucky to have you.
That's the way my power meter works, too. Low numbers aren't accurate. High numbers? Spot on. Very common power meter failing.
I enjoyed the video. Thanks for posting it.

Nice race. Congratulations. How long was the race and you can record with gopro ? My gopro 4 black lasts 50 minutes only.
Thanks for another episode of the vegan excuses! Keep em coming!
Even you didn't win ,but you fought very hard bro well done !
I've been waiting for these kind of vids even though I only have an MTB lol!!
Great vid! Crit season is almost upon us.
That hazy tail camera though! Lap counter would be awesome bro.
You did what you could. Not bad at all. Congrats.
Thanks for posting the video... there is something to be learned in every situation.
Fantastic editing and commentary

wish i had practice crits by me :(
Vegan Rider me too
16:22 lean angle didn't seem so steep on the pedal scrape? long cranks!?
sounds good. you have great fitness bro. you were right there just got sidetracked.
you need a couple wingmen! Great video as always!

hi from Puerto Rico
i love the gloves, its have to be freaking cold in the time of year we live in a tropical island sow we use short gloves all the time :)
and i love you videos
Great footage and interesting analysis, what data screens would you recommend on Garmin for race vs training?
+Eamonn Byrd my training screen has more about distance, elevation, cadence. As where my race screen is just power, lap power, and time.
With no power meter, would you use HR or HRZone,? Thanks
Heart rate seems low compared to prior crit videos. Age catching up, lacking fitness, bad sensor, all the above? Thanks for the videos, yours are the best out there!
+Super Pickle I have a bunch of fatigue right now, so that prevents my heart rate from getting up into the high 90s.
Great save!!!
Oooops catching a pedal on the ground at 28mph on that last corner was nearly nasty man.
Can we talk about those yellow wooden gloves tho?
Maybe you don't give yourself enough credit as a sprinter. It looks like your watts were low (for you) in that sprint. Maybe you gave up a bit? Anyone else notice the guy on the wrong side of the cones at 2:54 ?
Alexander Raimo he probably took the turn too fast and had to turn into the other side or maybe he arrived late to the practice race and decided to hop on
He went to fast on the turn
it seems to me you never have any team mates!! whats happening?
Perhaps u should title these vids as something/somewhat "advanced" as your jargon/slang is hard to keep up with (noted more so in the beginning) for noobs-intermeds; re: learning your tactics, thought processes, etc. That or give links to tutorials/brush-ups/explanations type vids u've already done, that they've not seen. Yuuh!
Rad!
And Pigeon Toes beats Yeller Gloves and the rest by four lengths.
Keep it up !
oh and PMA!
Those gloves tho
Not so sure it was a pedal scrape, bike didn't jump up at all... looked maybe like the rear broke traction from the speed, lean and weight shift?
Rich Lovelock it was definitely, camera didn’t pick up the sound but seeing and hearing it happen in front of us erases any doubt
Ah fair enough, did my first crit on technical circuit couple weeks back was wary of this happening. Guess there's no way to know how far you can go until you find the limit!?
almost lost it during intro
Dont worry man hindsight is always 2020
Awesome video! Wish we could get some comments or thoughts from Jamin on the ride. Fuckin Hauss
We dont have winter in my country but im sure that not winter cycling glove.
:)
Way to spoil who won the race aha
FIRST
Wasn't a pedal strike. Dude's rear wheel lost traction going into that corner at suck a steep angle!
Ray G could it have been from low or high tire pressure?
Pedal strike caused it. I was there and saw (and heard it) in front of me
join an actual team
Very interesting video thanks for posting
Those gloves tho
