I love the honesty and humility in John’s voice. It’s rare these days to hear something that is deep lyrically, rich musically and resonates with the soul. A timeless gift that will be forever appreciated both now and for generations to come. I only wish more people stood still enough to stop and listen to John so that they didn’t need to feel so alone. Thanks John for keeping it real and non pretentious.
Indeed. I don't want to criticise your observation, only to add some perspective. I too am drawn to this kind of minimalist, pure form of songwriting. It is free of any attempt to conform to a genre or style, it is a 'song', plain and simple, perfectly crafted yet laid bare, with a naked self expression. Blaze, and Townes, were THE masters of this, though others have their moments. I hear more 'Blaze' in John Moreland's work, though there is something else. His songs are a little more 'wordy' than Blaze's ultra-minimal lullabies, but not on the level of intricacy of Townes, for example. This is not a criticism of either Townes or Blaze but an observation in how they differed. So he sits somewhere in between, and this gives a 'Springsteen-esque' quality to the lyrics. Infact, what I hear in John Moreland is about 75% Springsteen, 25% Blaze Foley, if I had to boil it down and simplify it. Springsteen is of course also a fantastic songwriter, though he crafted his image, music and lyrical content to a mass market with images and songs or working class heroes, american dreams and the search for something nostalgic and lost along the way, a relatable kind of desperation, one last shot at glory for the every-man. John Moreland is like Springsteen, minus certain stylistic conventions, lighter on the hope and heavier on the reality of the situation - The hangover once the youth wears off and the american 'dream' is awoken from. In this way, because he abides by no particular idiom or makes any compromise to appeal to any particular market, what-so-ever really, the purity of what he does is very much Blaze Foley.
@@snoogan1 there's a little bit of all the great ones in there. Kind of just how these things happen, these great writers were all inspired by each other and channelled the same kind of purity of expression when they crafted their songs.
3 thumbs down are from people who don't like music, probably know nothing about it and perhaps stumbled upon this video by accident while scrolling down searching for sone shit.
Its not about that mate. Its about the voice and artistry that is rarley found in this world. Regardless of his weight he is an amazing artist and should be respected as such!!

the sickest song i've madly fell in love with, for a long time. perfectly constructed. It has taught me so much about song craft. it's a perfect song.

should have been a standing ovation after that!
