In years to come when you need to revisit the definition of "soul", here it is - Bettye Lavette with just a piano. Brilliant, searing and completely shattering -
You all just don't know but this lady has been entertaining since the 60's. She no doubt gets much of that authentic passion from the streets of Detroit.Ms Lavette...if you read these post just wanted to thank you for making my late auntie happy back in the day whenever she heard your song " Almost" she used to sing" not quite but Almost" lol!
When Bettye sings I cry with love. She reached into my soul and gives it a hug. This and Let it Rein at the Kennedy Center Honors are classics.
Derek Bohon AGREED
At its essence, less is more. Very few lines, only a piano. Elegant, gut-wrenching, soulful, heartbreaking...marvelous.
Saw her last night at the East Coast Blues Festival, Byron Bay Australia.
one of the best performances I've ever seen. I had tears rolling down my cheeks. What a gift!
I love the heartbreak and raw emotion in her voice. You hear and feel the pain..
I still can't watch this entire thing without getting tears in my eyes.
Fantastic performance. This is one of those moments that a vocalist dreams of. I bet she wishes she could bottle this up and keep it as it was forever. I guess she managed to do that in a way. This video really translates incredibly.
Bettye, if you read this - good on you. Great job.
WOW! her voice is so beautiful. i feel thaf they are only a select amount of singer that have the gift of being able to give you chills and bring tears to your eyes with the passion in their voices. its like they song straight to the heart. the first time i heard her voice i was watch her on austin city limits and i was blown away! i had never heard of her before that and i became an instant fan. im in my early 20s but i love the style of music she sings! LOVE U BETTYE!!!!!!
First, I stumbled onto her mind-bending rendition of the Who's Love Reign O'er Me at the Kennedy Center Honors, and now, ten minutes later, this. How have I never heard of this extraordinary woman till right now?
Incredible song to me, nearly beyond belief.
I was watching Craig last night, and must of drifted off- but the piano, and her first notes pulled me right awake.
I almost couldn't breath, listening. . . .
A truely amazing song, and Bettye- I'm just speechless as to her sound, skills, emotion, and astonishing preformance.
Lots of search, ing, but I'm SO glad that now I have the info I need to seek out more of her music.
What a superior tallent, Wow. And Thanks to Craig, and to Betty
Pure brilliance
What an absolutely incredible version of this George Harrison song. So deeply touching, it made me weep.
This is the only version I've heard that really captures the soul of this most beautiful song. The Clapton version is also so beautiful but it sounds more like a tribute to a frend. This was amazing, thank you for posting!
This is simply a brutally honest plea that is so well done. I was brought to tears by its beauty
What an amazing talent!!
awesome ,very moving performance .
God.... positively beautiful, moving... so impressive, a gift
Jesus, Bettye. Did you have to make me cry?
Go Girl! If a person just listen, you can hear the desire for much love in this lady's heart. The world might do you wrong, but if God be for you who can be against you? The world can't stop a true player. The world need to expose this song to give people something to think about, it's a pity how positive things are hidden. This need to be a influential message of hope. Where's the News when you need them? Much love for you girl!
I wasn't expecting that, wow.
Epic !! So much emotion.
I am weeping in front of my freakin' computer. DAYUM.
One of George's brilliant works...
Really, really amazing.
Listening to this I coundn't help but think about the events in Paris.
love might still save the planet.
My mind is..bubbling or something. Great piece from George and it is in Good hands!
Watch the pianist right at the end... haha great

George Harrison would have been honored to have heard his song redone by Bettye. The original in on Harrison's Epic 'All Things Must Pass' album.
