When I watched this at the cinema with my wife afterwards we came out and she asked me what did I think of the movie. I said I think its a love story for men to enjoy. (many brownie points were won that day)
Interesting idea for a film, but I thought it got too silly half way through. Emily Blunt and Matt Damon's performances were the only thing that saved this film. The more you think about the ideas behind the film and examine the plot the sillier it gets - but if you don't think too much about it, it is entertaining - to a point.
I really enjoyed this , also been a fan of matt damons. was obvious how it was going to end but i was entertained. i really liked the connection with emily blunt and matt damon and the romance in the movie wasent cheesy , was kinda sweet. also agree with the doc , this is no way Bourne meets inception.
I agree with the precious poster in that you are definitely missing out but I would warn you that, apart from some superficial window dressing, the stories are VERY different. If you like Blade Runner for its philosophy, then you may like DADOES. If however you like the dialogue or the characters, then you will be dissappointed. Philip K Dick's dialogue is very odd. Interesting, yes, but definitely not for everybody. His characters are also are also very different from the ones you see on screen. Not in that usual Hollywood "I can't believe they cast him," sort of way but actual, different people. Anyhow, hope I've piqued your interest.
Yes, I have read 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep'. It was a shame the movie strayed so far from the book. In the book Deckard (Harrison Ford) had a pet sheep, which was electric which he kept in a roof top garden. Then, one day, he saw someone with a real pet. And the biggest kick of the book that was missing from the movie 'Blade Runner' (well, not missing, but if you didn't know the book you'd miss it) was that Deckard himself believed he was, or actually was an (ran out of characters).
That Deckard suspects he's a replica to us not really missing. In the one version (there's a few) where an origami unicorn is left at his door, by the cop, which matches his unicorn dream earlier. That someone else knows his dreams, as he revealed earlier that he was told his replicant girlfriend's dreams, raises some doubts about whether he is also a replicant. This scene was cut from some distributions. It makes a second viewing more interesting. If he's a replicant like Roy Batty, and Roy knew, that also changes their relationship at the end.
mayo really needs to learn about the concept of spoilers, it'd stop him asking about 30% of the stupid questions he always asks in the middle of kermode's talk
The film’s issues are the confusing lack of storytelling & script, however the film’s well acted, intriguing, effective, stylish & enjoyable. (74%) (3.5/5 stars) (positive)
Hmm while ago now lol. From memory it was mainly Emilt Blunt , her character was really annoying. The usually watchable Matt Damon was cloying in his (cant think of a better word ) sappyness. The end seemed telegraphed yet hugley pleased with itself at the same time. Just what I thought tho, I'm sure other people liked it.
The film falls flat because it fails to convince. The idea is good - though like a lot of speculative fiction it simply takes a metaphor and makes it literal - but it does not work on the level of characters and does not present a convincing relationship. Therefore the whole thing crashes. Boring. Not terrible, just boring.
Now that's interesting. Kermode says the film is silly, bright, heavily signposted, popcorn fun, but works as there are two people you care for at its centre. Inception had an entire cast of expositors NO ONE could care for, yet was his Film of the Year. (Though if you had that Marion Cotillard performance in a proper relationship drama, she could've won another Oscar.) Point is, if it's driven by actual human beings and not just Nolanesque avatars, I'll probably like this a hell of a lot more.
@@squirlmy Or - As Nolan has transitioned from single protagonist pieces like Memento and Insomnia to his chessboard style ensemble works in the latter half of his career, he’s lost that ability to make us truly care about his leads since he’s preoccupied with moving the pieces around. Batman Begins remains his greatest film precisely because in that juncture point of his filmography that mostly stoats in the headspace of one person and perfectly marries both his head and his heart. Interstellar was a far less successful attempt to do the same thing.
im sure i have seen an old version of this film the only person i remember being in it was Richard O`Brien from crystal maze anyone else remember the movie ?
No one placed an answer for over a year... I'm sure you would have found out by now but if anyone else is wondering the movie you're looking for is Dark City from 1998.
Okay, I have to be honest. I watched the film and - and this will sound obvious to hoards of Inception fans - I did NOT like it as much as Inception. I was still right about the film having far better characters and motivations, but it doesn't have the constantly brain-teasing plot. The weakest element is the Bureau itself - they're just not threatening enough even for a light hearted romantic thriller. What really works is Damon and Blunt's interaction. Left my little review on Kermode's blog.
What a bizarre review. Usually I like Mayo, while I find Kermode kinda pretentious and annoying, but throughout this I was irritated by Mayo's fatuous interuptions, while Mark was endearingly open-minded, balanced and...I hesitate to use the word 'forgiving', but it's the best I can do having not yet seen the film. Great review.
Oh dear. My respect for Kermode and Mayo has gone down a notch after listening to this review. This film is boring at best. The story has no substance to it and the convenient ending was a massive let down. There was absolutely no point to this film and the main characters supposed 'relationship' was teenage and completely unbelievable. I do not understand how this could ever be compared with Inception. It is not only not in the same league it is not even in the same sport!

I'm glad Mark liked this movie because even though I know this is silly I still love this film!

I thought it was really stupid- and I found the romance scenes so sickly

I'd love to hear his review of A Scanner Darkly
I've been a fan of Blade Runner just over 3 decades, seen it a dozen times. I've never read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.
You're missing out

Most romantics probably not into sci fi and vice versa, so won't be everyone's cup of tea. I loved it!

4:46 I love how Mayo just dives in there with that remark
Mark's English gentleman swag is off the meter.

i really like both blunt and damon- hope its good!
I dunno why Mayo gets so much hate. Lot of people don't get his sense of humour I guess.
@lordtufty The podcast should be there around 6pm. Keep an eye on the 5 live site. Enjoy

Loads of people have read Do Androids...
This is one of the few instances I can stand up and say Simon, you don't speak for me as i have read 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep'.
Dick may have written this, but he absolutely lifted it from Serling.
Lots of people have read and enjoyed Phillip K. Dick, I think Mayo is confusing 'most people' with his own opinion.
"Have you got wind?"
"No but thanks for bringing it up! Hahaha!"
Lol🤣🤣
i disagree it's nothing like Inception IMO.

If you didn't care for the main character in Inception, you're watching the movie wrong.

Mayo "Directing traffic?" :)
Sounds like there's rather too much expressing oneself through the medium of modern dance...
care to elaborate?
the film is okay, but it's highly derivative of other films, including "The Candidate" and "The Graduate".
Cmon Dr. Kermode - don't lump Minority Report in with the rest of that shit.

A much better film, an all time classic that wasn't based on Phillip K. Dick. The cinematography was gorgeous.
I love this movie.

God, I sincerely do not know how Kermode stops himself from getting up and slapping Mayo.
I didnt think their romance was believable.
"Do Androids..." is a confusing mess. Dick's work is full of interesting sci-fi concepts, but he was a consistently incoherent writer.

This film sucked a tonne of ass.
inception was ok but this film made me physically angry lol !
