Mugen (stylized as M.U.G.E.N) is a freeware 2D fighting game engine designed by Elecbyte. Content is created by the community, and thousands of fighters, both original and from popular fiction, have been created. It is written in C and originally used the Allegro library. The latest versions of the engine use the SDL library.
I.K.E.M.E.N (short for Itsumademo Kanseishinai Eienni Mikansei ENgine) is a free and open-source fighting game engine designed to be compatible with M.U.G.E.N content, while also expanding on its feature set to allow for more flexible customization. The engine is notable for introducing stage zoom prior to the release of the M.U.G.E.N 1.1 beta, and for allowing netplay matches, a feature that is not supported in any official build of M.U.G.E.N.
Rivals of Aether is an indie platform fighter video game created by Dan Fornace, and released for Microsoft Windows in March 2017, for Xbox One in August 2017, and for Nintendo Switch on September 24, 2020. It received positive reception from critics, who commended its deep gameplay. Rivals of Aether is the spiritual sequel to Super Smash Land, a fan-made remake of Super Smash Bros., and therefore its gameplay mechanics are heavily based on the latter game. Each character must try to knock the others out of a two-dimensional arena. In addition to fighting game-style moves, characters can also use elemental-based attacks or passive abilities that also affect the stage. This creates a meta game of not only attacking other players but also affecting the arena itself. Gameplay in general favors offense more than defense compared to Smash Bros.; attacks can only be blocked by executing a timed "parry" rather than holding up a shield, and characters cannot safely grab edges when returning to the stage.
Street Fighter, commonly abbreviated as SF or スト (Suto), is a Japanese media franchise centered on a series of fighting video and arcade games developed and published by Capcom. The first game in the series was released in 1987, followed by six other main series games, various spin-offs and crossovers, and numerous appearances in other media. Its best-selling 1991 release Street Fighter II established many of the conventions of the one-on-one fighting genre. Street Fighter is one of the highest-grossing video game franchises of all time and is one of Capcom's flagship series with total sales of 48 million units worldwide as of June 2022. It is the highest-grossing fighting game media franchise of all time at US$12.2 billion, including 500,000 arcade unit sales. Игры

@@smpltxt. What
Where can I download it/play it?!.
@@knrz2562 Ya, that's a good question.
Mugen is the embodiement of a world free of copyright law. Pure art with no goal of financial gain. purely expression, competition, challenge and fun.
Yeah but some creators is starting to sell their Characters
@@danielfromyt3116 so you agree that the profit insentive under capitalism is inherently exploitative when you can't get your basic needs? Yeah me too.
I don't know man. It takes a lot of time to make characters. I believe SOME compensation is in order. Expressing yourself, in general, pays dick and this ain't the Federation. If it was, then I'm all for it, but You gotta eat somehow.
@@diamondfrieza5391 Yeah! Let’s make everything free! How are you going to pay the people making the stuff for you? Oh you won’t? Hm, I’m SURE that’ll work out fine.
@@diamondfrieza5391 1. The government has to get money from somewhere, aka taxes, so unless you want crippling taxes that would not allow you to have enough money to afford anything, I suggest you think of a new idea.
And it's not "only" the rich. You're on your phone/computer right now, sitting at a desk or bed, arguing with a person online. You being able to spend that time not working shows how privileged you are.
If you want less poverty, then you should support capitalism, since GLOBAL GDP has increased by 60% since 1988, and I assure you thats not become of socialism
Wait... You're telling me M.U.G.E.N. was originally an actual game that was created by a company? I always thought it was an engine that appeared out of the ether so random people online could make their own fighting game characters. And it was even updated at 2013... I didn't think it'd get any official updates at all!
it is a game engine for making games, but yeah it used to get updates from original company electbyte
@@typhoonbh that part I didn’t know
I heard other people were updating it though?
@@Ramsey276one when electbyte would go on a hiatus, people would update it themselves, since the company hasn’t done anything with it since 2013 any changes after that were done by the community
Is more like the RPG Maker
@@Ramsey276one ALOT of people are making their own Mugen Engine, the best imo is I.K.E.M.E.N
God bless the MUGEN community, that it's so insane they made characters that could completely brick your PC if you install them all because just to see who can make the most powerful character of all
Yeah the hyper boss characters where you can't even see the screen anymore were crazy
Evolving from a fighting game to a programming contest to (rarely) a malware contest
@@typhoonbh Yeah, WinMUGEN gets crazy with the exploits people use to make their characters unbeatable. And beautiful.

I remember MUGEN so back ago, it was pretty fun since you could put ANY character you wanted against each other.
It was ahead of its time
Man I loved that game its one of the first fighting games I've played, I think my first fighting game was the old street fighter then the old mortal kombat, then this game
I only played MUGEN in 2021 but When I was younger, watching that game is awesome
@@AkunicXhow can I download it/play it?!.
I was a creator for MUGEN around 2001. I really love this game engine and the community. Unfortunate life events left me without a PC for about 5 years, and I never quite got back into it. I love watching the engine and the community evolve and grow, and occasionally binge MUGEN related content on RUclips because it is so fun to watch.
Excited at the idea of netcode. That makes it a lot more likely for me to try my hand at creation again.
Wait what, you created MUGEN??
Wo0w do0 u still need a laptop/🖥?!.😢
@@OsamabinLaden1-i3oHe was a developer not the creator
Mate I use Mugen now to make an all star game, it is such a fun engine and I’ve got the hang of it very quick
The best part about mugen is the fact that it opened the way for some great projects to be formed. My favourite by far is Hyper Dragon Ball Z as the actually take the time to make characters deep and balanced plus having great looking stages and original music
Man I used to freaking LOVE Mugen as a stopgap thing to play when I couldn't go to an arcade. I don't think I'll ever forget Kung Fu Man
kung fu man will live on even if mugen doesn't
I have been building a game on Mugen since 2020 and it’s almost finished and yeah I’ve made kung fu man an honoury member of the roster
Man, as a kid I remember seeing mugen videos all the time, the idea of choosing any characters I wanted and making them fight absolutely blew my mind back then.
So much nostalgia.
It's interesting that you mentioned IKEMEN being delay-based because the dev team behind it is actively working on a build with rollback. It's still nowhere near ready for use in games but I bet in a few years a significant chunk of the M.U.G.E.N. community will be using it.
That's good to hear!
Good news
Good video. Not too many videos on M.U.G.E.N. As for online, that's been spotty over the years. There were several attempts to get an online version of MUGEN up and running but it seemed that the scattered community was what kind of held that back for a time. At one point there were 2 or 3 different online MUGEN engines going around and that makes it hard to decide which one the community should be using. I didn't lurk too much in the forums of the sites so there are likely many other reasons but that's what I've gleamed over several years of playing and checking out MUGEN sites.
Makes sense, as good as it can be to have the community be the forefront of mugen it can be hard to collectively agree on what to do next with the engine
I grew up with mugen, being able to play with almost any character in existence was insane to me, had countless hours of fun as a kid with mugen...
that includes jaiden animations as well, plus the venus de milo statue and the character from edvard munchs screamer painting!
How did you do it?
I was into MUGEN since the 2000s. Still remember the first character I saw, a Vegito who the creator had just programmed to fly. Kept a partition running Windows Me on my XP machine just to run my old DOS MUGEN build (bad decision). It was such fun customizing everything to my liking and having the characters I wanted.
The good old days of digging through random Brazilian websites over dialup to amass the best roster possible.
I haven't played Mugen in over 20 years, but a random RUclips recommendation reminded me of its brilliance. And now this feels like a nice retrospective for a brief time in my life where I loved mish mashing different fighters from different games into one.
One of the best parts about Mugen in my opinion are the amazing original characters that people make for it, especially the ones from the Japanese Mugen community.
I remember back in the day watching Homer Simpson fight Peter Griffin in mushroom Kingdom. Those were the good days
(Didn't see this mentioned later on)
Glad to see someone make a video on MUGEN. It's honestly one of my favorite games to play, alongside having the joy of actually creating stuff for it.
I remember being so proud of myself learning how to set up MUGEN with my own characters, stages, etc. as a kid in 1999. I love to see it’s stayed relevant.
😮
Gotta appreciate the amazing editing you put in your videos, great work!
I appreciate that!
M.U.G.E.N was the first "traditional" 2D fighting game I've ever played while still being this weird fever dream with the modding around the engine (The fast food mascots, Cheapies like Pepsiman, low quality edits etc...).
It's also one of the games that made me want to learn pixel art and I owe it a lot because of it.
Pepsiman is a cheapie? I thought cheapies were 2nd Death Star or EX Akabane
@@FirstTry9948 Those last two are. As for pepsiman, I might have downloaded a joke edit in which his only attack covers the screen with a png of soda liquid then one-Ko the opponent, or at least that's what I recall.
Sorry If I didn't answer sooner, saw the notif 48 min after you commented but couldn't answer because my 4G provider for some reasons automatically turn on RUclips's restricted mode (can't see comment outside of notification)and had to wait until I got back home.
One of the most memorable moments of all time involving mugen for me was watching the old school Nickelodeon logo fight the old school cartoon network logo. it was so jarring to me as a kid but i wanted to play this game so badly after watching it.
Thank you for this video, I feel like not many people know about how M.U.G.E.N is basically the first game where you can add anything and anyone and I feel it's like very underrated as well. if you ask someone what M.U.G.EN is they wouldn't even know man but thankfully it Is coming more to light nowadays while back then it was a bit obscure and it was definitely something you just find by going deep in youtube fighting game sphere
@4:10 , I was hoping to see some of my creations in the video but sadly I did not... HOWEVER I did see you included a scroll by of my original baby. Mugen Free For All! Wooo! Keep up the good work guys!
2:00 Hey, long time Mugen coder here. Nice video!
But the name M.u.g.e.n. didn't come from the japanese word MUGEN. It's an acronym that Elecbyte forgot the meaning. For me, it always came from MUltiple Game ENgine.
W8 wtf u were a dev for the game?!.😮

It's crazy to think that I have been playing mugen with my friends since 2006. We used to have parties back when I was in high school and everyone was always excited about the new characters I added each week. Then after a while I got into coding and started doing my own character edits. This is the fighting game I always end up going back to because the various crossover matches you can do and lets not forget the memes lol
The fact that you can make littlerally everything is still crazy for me

I know this video is old, but I remember a couple of years ago when TikTok started having the live stream feature a bunch of people were posting mugen and I had no idea what it was and like you said people were legit betting I don’t know why I just randomly remembered it and I looked it up and I found your video. Thanks for that
sick. glad someone made a mugen vid. takes me back
ah, M.U.G.E.N. The game i spent hours and hours being absolutely amazed by as a child. Seeing Spongebob and Patrick 2v2 Mario and Sonic was truly something. I've always wanted to make my own personalized roster but never had the motivation to start. Maybe that'll change soon.
I've been playing M.U.G.E.N since 2004 and I still play it today.

This Is An Awesome Video About MUGEN! MUGEN Is A Blessing To Anyone That Wants To Have Fun And Learn About Fighting Games! It Actually Helped Me Learn More About Video Games And Helped Me Discover The World Of Pixel Art. I Decided Wanted To Create Things For The Engine And Started With Making Stages! I Still Love To Create MUGEN Stages To This Very Day And I've Made Over 200 Stages So Far! I Love To See Different Plot Scenarios Unfold With MUGEN Characters And The Setting That's Taking Place! Amazing Video And Keep Being Awesome, Typhoon! ^_^
MUGEN has limitless potential. (pun intended)
Some legit fighting games were made on MUGEN. Theres a Fist of the North Star italian that is mind blowingly great. The creator used the assets from the original 2D fighting game then commissioned artists to bring a lot of characters from the franchise to the game. The size and scope is quite amazing. Also there is that Utlimate Super Marvel Vs Capcom 2 that has tons and tons of characters which is fun to play.
As someone making a game in Ilemen myself, im amazed by the engine and its comunity every day
And i know someone who is working on a rollback netcode for Ikemen so, keep your hope up
I can only say its functional, dont wanna put too much pressure in them
mugen and rivals of aether are the only games where you'll see mario fighting goku & ronald mcdonald
@InternetMemeThief ronald mcdonald betrays goku and solos the both of them
Super smash bros with a little sprinkle
one thing to add on to the saltybet thing is that theres another set up called spriteclub also on twitch since saltybet got kinda abandoned and is basically exclusively run by bots running everything without needing any hands on work so it gets botted a lot.
3:08 Bro! I remember this game!! Idk why I got a bit nostalgic right there
Yeah it’s the base character kung fu man, pretty cool for a default character.
Bro took “Everyone’s Here” to a Whole New Level
10 seconds in and this editing already sumn beautiful
I had thought about this since about 2007 when I finally gave up on the game I was making. So weird that something from when I was an early 20 something is still around when I'm 43 was such an interesting online community
1:32 i like the "Vondakay" reference :D
This takes me back, I used to spend all day making characters and moves growing up lol
Mugen still lives on with me and I now have it in 2024 and many of my friends don’t even know what it is and I’m English, but once they see it they say how cool it is
Man, this game legit takes me back, now that I've had the game for years I can say it's the greatest fighting game of all time.
Yo yo Mugen creator here there is a lot to catch up with but something that wasn't said in the video is about the while process of character creating (which is fair) and also you should've talked about Mugennext (not sure if it's one n or two) which is an "updated version of Mugen" made by the people who made fighter factory (the program people use to make characters) but really happy to see a new video about Mugen
Yeah I should have at least mentioned it, what stopped me was not being very knowledgeable on it and also the process can be tedious, I thought that section might be too long.
Yea that fair I get it also as you said making characters is tedious as you said so it's not a big deal glad to have you in the community
@@typhoonbh I've seen a lot of people only move to MUGENNEXT purely for profit reasons, which is a giant shame to be honest.
Sadly, last I checked, electbyte havent disappeared, they've broken up. Theres Ikemen but it gets updated too frequently and theres always the risk of the code you used becoming unsupported.
Edit: The creators of the software that you use to make mugen content are making a build called mugenext but I wouldn't bank on that too much since the changelogs so far are minor changes.
I dont see mugen as an Engine going anywhere soon or even in the far future. But the content creators are learning new ways to do better stuff so the quality of characters, stages and screenpacks will continue to rise and that's what I think will keep the engine alive
Nah, IKEMEN Go has always focused on retrocompatibility and it improves by the second.

Well that was a cool video showcasing something truly amazing, as much as I love being part of your community typhoon, I don’t think I’ll be participating in the tournament as I don’t have Time to watch a whole entire stream.

7:04 lmao MKvsSF, classic flash animation from way back when.
This is pretty good level of content. Not to sound cliche but you deserve more views.
Gotta love how its 8 minutes!
Awesome video, exactly what I was searching for! Did you ever host that stream with the CPU fights???
Yeah, we ended up doing 2 tournaments, it was fun
Great video on MUGEN also if your looking for some MUGEN games then 1 I would recamened is HyperDBZ basically awnsers the question what if Capcom made a Dragon Ball fighting game back in the 90s? This game is no longer receiving official updates so I recommended downloading any of the many fan-made builds out there.
Me when I lie
Lmfao I didn't expect to see Mickey vs Duane on here
the fact you pronounce Dos as D-O-S really shows how young you are.
He actually pronounces it correctly later in the video
I thought this game was a fever dream i imagined at a LAN party in 2005, so glad i finally found it 😂😂😂
Im not sure if you already know it, but there are fan proyects that go more far than just putting up characters, i know 4 proyects that have been around since a while exept for one, the first i want to talk about is...
King Of Fighters Memorial, game that reunites all of the KOF characters into one game, it has a interesing story and some new characters and a whole screenpack (there are so many versions of this game that i dont know exactly what is the original, but from the times i played it i really had fun with the characters!)
Another MUGEN that is of the same saga is KOF WING, this is pretty much better than the other one, with the characters we know and some new faces, and hell, the visuals of this game are incredible, and they recently announced that there will be a 2022 version coming out soon!
The Third proyect i want to talk about is Sonic Fighter Blitz, this is a recent one and its a fighting game with some sonic characters, and i had fun playing with it as sonic, it does'nt have too much to offer, but its still worth the playing
And finally, the one that i love the most: Hyper Dragon Ball Z, this game features characters of Dragon Ball Z with movesets completely different from one another destined for the competitive, all of these characters are unique, and every one of them has ultimates that are visually incredible, you can see how much effort they put into this, i highly recommend you to play it if you have'nt, because i think this game shows how far MUGEN can go.
Nice video and story though. You should do a story about a game called Subspace a online only 2D spaceship combat game from the 90s. It is a little similar to Mugen in that it was originally published by a company and sold commercially. It was soon abandoned but revived through the fan community using a hacked version of the game server and client. It is still going 25 years later. Although the community has dwindled instead of growing stronger like Mugen.
I like how he was like "the only way to play with friends is through parsec" as if you can't play friends locally lol
I get what Typhoon meant. I just found that funny
I still do ai mugen every couple of months, I enjoy it to this, I've been on It since 2011, such a legendary game.
Loved this back in the day wonder if I still have it
Hey man! I'm one of the devs, thanks for mentioning Knockout!
No problem! Great game btw
Holy moly did I just see MC Chris as a Mugen character? Infinite, indeed.
I still love playing my mugen
That Microsoft Windows fighting game is canonically Bill Gates' first fighting game

Real and true
Stopped playing mugen because I got bored. Then, I came across Ikemen GO 0.98.2 and it's an improved version of mugen. Having animated portraits in select screen, ai ramping and many modules created by the community just makes it really fun to play with. Although some chars may have problem running in Ikemen GO, most of it would just run fine.
When he turned around i laughed so friggin hard. 😭 7:07
I always loved that Free Fighting Game
My favorite is timbs. Yes the boots. Watch timbs vs air force ones. Whoever did that has alot of creativity & imagination.
I need to check that one out lol
If I download MUGEN or IKEMEN, I’ll be able to download the characters from Super Mario, Sonic The Hedgehog, Kirby, BBTAG, All Star Brawl, MultiVersus and Newgrounds Rumble.
There is a good amount of polish in some games, like CvS3 and Hyper DBZ
I like to think of mugen as less of a game and more pf a engine to be honest
Mugen I bet seeing this thumbnail.
I actually used to watch hella vids of it. Crazy potential
I always wanted to play it 😂i used to watch so many game plays in 2013 and

That's what IKEMEN Go is. :)
Yo, what is the name of the ice mugen stage ? looks pretty good !
Even though M.U.G.E.N has a big following and a very active community, nobody really knows who its creators are, as they chose to stay anonymous. The only known thing is that they’re originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan and were probably college students at the time they developed the engine.
Does anyone know the stage name in 3:50?
this is the same game as i saw with peter vs homer. ima look foward to playing it
love this video, but I was falling on the ground laughing when you were referring to the DOS in MS-DOS as D O S. I'm a slightly old head I guess
I didn’t realize until I corrected myself later in the video lol. I was pretty young when that operating software was starting to become obsolete I had no clue what it was called
M.U.G.E.N seriously is the best crossover thing ever! As far as i know nothing comes close.
This video was great, amazing to see another """"""review""""" of MUGEN.
This sounds fun to play. I'm gonna play as Sonic and fight GF.
Yo sponsor, les go.
Sorry but the first winmugen beta didnt have a roster limit, you can still check for yourself. In fact it allowed an even more roster than dos and linux mugen; when winmugen plus came out the major improvements were related to the aspect ratio rather than characters limit
Thanks for this
I remember MUGEN and RUclips poop parodies content we're in the Golden age of RUclips good memories
Some may think it’s a bit of a stretch but I’ve always honestly felt that if there was no MUGEN, SSB might have never been a thing. Crossovers in fighting games existed but never to the extent of content or variety that you could see from this engine. I think it demonstrated what could actually be possible and how much more interest it could generate with access and resources.
Just got done building a first bulid, a second one is in progress, the first one is in my channel
I feel like these dates are wrong. I remember playing Mugen in highschool, which would have been 99-03, but according to your video the program wasn't out to the public and supported till after that.
Even if I played it in college that's still 03-05
5:06 nah that’s epic
