The question is, did Melo have the mindset to be a two-way player? Most guys who have that defensive mentality don't have to be taught it at the pro level. They just have that dog in them to be a defender. We can't assume he'd just develop that because he'd be on the Pistons.

Marlon Smith: What game / games did you see Melo Lock down Kobe? Melo is a stiff defending 4 @ best, guarding an all time great 2 in Kobe is ridiculous.!
@kiyan west : No need to, I'm old enough to have watched that series when it was actually going on. I'm 49 years old. Melo was not going to be a good fit w/ that Pistons team. That Pistons core group was a very close & special group. What many of you seem to forget is that "w/ the exception of Tysuan Prince", each one of them had either failed on other NBA teams, or had worn our their welcome. They came together & proved everyone wrong.. Melo was coming off an NCAA Championship, felt he should've been # 1 & had a huge ego (understandably so).. That team moved the ball very well & played for each other. The ball stops w/ Melo
@kiyan west: By the way Kobe averaged 34pts / 5rbs/ & 5.8 assists in that playoff series against the Nuggets, & the Lakers beat them 4 games to 2. Maybe I'm missing something. So Please explain to me how Carmelo Anthony shut Kobe down?
For the first time ever, I agree with Max. The whole thing with the Pistons was how they maximized each position’s speciality. This was because each gave them exactly what they needed, so inserting Carmelo into that lineup sort of ruins the whole system in place.
One of the best teams of an era which had so many stars, even when the coach was changed 3 times almost back to back camps until Duncan took over in the last mins of game 7
I may be wrong.. but did the pistons not get sheed Wallace in a mid season deal?? I don't see that happening if they draft Carmelo which changes ALOT.. Don't know why no one brought that up
Chauncey Billups is one of the most underrated players of ALL TIME. By Far. Superb defender. Superb shooter. Game changing guard. Would start on any NBA team today.
SAS tried to act like he’s sum basketball genius when he picked 7 finals wrong IN A ROW speaks in generalities, hypotheticals, psychological and intangibles more than anybody
people always say thay philly team was trash but they specifically built that team around AI. got guys who did all the defense/rebounding so AI could just focus on scoring. that’s why they made the finals and why larry brown won coach of the year
Reginald Hill they were one of the best defensive teams in the league that year, that helps. that kind of roster set up is the only way I see a team making the finals if their star player is primarily just a scorer like melo/AI
So in Max's logic, Darko was a good defender because he didn't make the Pistons lose against the Pacers. If you take out Darko and insert Melo into the roster, the Pistons win chips as long as they keep that team together until they got too old.

But bro the most important detail of this is that Melo was a rookie. No way he’s starting. He would have been a champ and 6th man of the year
Mugiwara MattB I dunno Melo probably would expect to start
Ben Hagos they win whether Melo start of come off the bench either way that combo of Melo and Prince would have so worked Melo dropping buckets then prince coming in and shutting down Melo man wearing him down then Melo coming back in putting more pressure on him to stop him
I think sheed comes off the bench he only played 20 games that season either way they’re winning with melo
@@MugiwaraMattB Sheed wasn't even on the team then so Mello would be starting and they might not have even traded for Sheed.
I’m having a hard time deciding what jay Williams looks like more a genius food critic turtle or an uncover black kebler elf
A Pistons team with Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince , Rasheed Wallace, Ben Wallace and Carmelo Anthony as your sixth man would absolutely win multiple NBA Championships.
Bruh rookie melo was giving starters 20 a game, you bring him of the bench against second stringers?? He probably would've been 6th man of the year easy.
Ain't no way they start Prince over Melo
That story of Chauncey at the club tellin everyone to get out is epic
SAS used to bring this up all the time back in his early days on First take.
Max is breaking my heart with his argument... Melo could have been a two way player if was drafted by Detroit... imagine pistons are always in the Finals (04 & 05) and ECF (06,07 & 08)... and they still will not win with Melo? 🤦♂️
The question is, did Melo have the mindset to be a two-way player? Most guys who have that defensive mentality don't have to be taught it at the pro level. They just have that dog in them to be a defender. We can't assume he'd just develop that because he'd be on the Pistons.
0:00 the disrespect and look at max face too smh
I always said Melo’s legacy was lost on draft day! They had THE squad in the East for years...with Darco!!!
Love the passion Gents! Very refreshing to see great basketball minds RESPECTFULLY disagree and do it bringing smiles to one another faces!. Appreciate the blessing.
Yeah Max gotta chill with this one lmao I usually side with him but he’s crazy.
Troubled Boy side with him about what!!!?!!!
Ppl forget is they probably would have not treated for Rasheed Wallace if they had Carmelo
@@rouzmajlessi1233 why not? They play different positions and Carmelo would have probably been an understudy to Tayshon Prince.
When Steven A. told Max to fall back I lost it! lolololololol
Are they implying that a group of defensive minded players in the pistons wouldn’t influence a rookie Carmelo to become a decent defender???
Preach!
He wasnt a bad defend early on epically against in wcf
Max is struggling to be the heel . But he is smiling throughout. He got lit up and took it well. Love this show
Aye my name is Chauncey, and I like hearing S.A.S saying my name...I feels good 😂
1:50 what happens when u don’t listen and get over emotional kuz that’s exactly what max said SAS is just up in his feelings kuz he doesn’t logically think they would win 2 or 3 rings wit Melos serious gap in defense which is a solid argument for THAT specific team
I love how they say mello don't play d. On that team he wouldn't of had to! Not to mention I seen games in mellos prime where he locked down kobe
And Max is wrong. The Bulls had the best defensive team. Jordan, Pippen, Rodman, Harper. The Pistons team was an absolute defensive force.
Nobody:
Stephan A Smith: *Loud Noices*
For the first time ever, I agree with Max. The whole thing with the Pistons was how they maximized each position’s speciality. This was because each gave them exactly what they needed, so inserting Carmelo into that lineup sort of ruins the whole system in place.
0:28 But yet they always want to bring up Jon Gruden taking over Tony Dungy’s team LOL
darcoman2 Larry Brown was white it not a racism thing Stephen A is just being biased and hypocritical
One of the best teams of an era which had so many stars, even when the coach was changed 3 times almost back to back camps until Duncan took over in the last mins of game 7
I can't wait to see this as baby Stephen A Smith
I may be wrong.. but did the pistons not get sheed Wallace in a mid season deal?? I don't see that happening if they draft Carmelo which changes ALOT.. Don't know why no one brought that up
Max always got that little smirk when he know he done pissed Stephen A off lol
SAS seems like he feels intellectually threatened by Max sometimes, which is why he gets so easily defensive
Max caught in a web of his lies
Chauncey Billups is one of the most underrated players of ALL TIME. By Far. Superb defender. Superb shooter. Game changing guard. Would start on any NBA team today.
Melo would've had a Kawhi-like development.
Honestly, this is a legit "what-if" situation
SAS tried to act like he’s sum basketball genius when he picked 7 finals wrong IN A ROW speaks in generalities, hypotheticals, psychological and intangibles more than anybody
Stephen A : put ppl around melo that can defend like they did iverson ...
also stephen A ... melo has only been to one conf finals
Reginald Hill lol whats your point 😂
Exactly they didn’t surround melo wit great defenders like that that’s why he only made one conf finals
people always say thay philly team was trash but they specifically built that team around AI. got guys who did all the defense/rebounding so AI could just focus on scoring. that’s why they made the finals and why larry brown won coach of the year
ce and not to mention they stole a game from LA ..... IN LA .. clearly overmatched
Reginald Hill they were one of the best defensive teams in the league that year, that helps. that kind of roster set up is the only way I see a team making the finals if their star player is primarily just a scorer like melo/AI
It’s funny because Mark Wilburhn who works for ESPN said he thought Carmelo maybe the better prospect than Lebron. Max is right
“I’m giving you knowledge fall back “ 😂😂
So in Max's logic, Darko was a good defender because he didn't make the Pistons lose against the Pacers.
If you take out Darko and insert Melo into the roster, the Pistons win chips as long as they keep that team together until they got too old.
Those pistons teams underachieved actually. They shoulda at 2 chips at the least and add melo instead of darko...
john mickins no they didn’t, beating the lakers in 04 is still regarded as a massive upset
They had no superstar, average offense, and the west had like 4 contenders, at least, what do you mean?
@@Isthatthegrimreaper170yeah they lost to the spurs the next year i get that. Spurs were VERY solid. But they had absolutely no business losing to the heat in '06 in 6, or the Cavs in the '07 also in 6 both in the ECF
@@johnmickns yea they should have won against the cavs atleast but gotta give props to Lebron
@@JrKdM I'm a HUGE lebron fan. He put on one of the greatest playoff performances of all time. I also thought it was poor coaching on the late flip saunders part as well
I just became a Stephen A Smith fan with him telling max when he tried to interrupt him "fall back, I'm giving you knowledge".
Pistons don’t win a ring if they draft Melo, as that likely means Tayshaun Prince off the bench plus they likely don’t even trade for Rasheed Wallace, and Melo was a ball dominant player
Naw .. melo off the bench . Pistons wouldn't Need melo To start , until later on in his Career
Arshdeep Singh THANK YOU PPL SLEEP ON PRINCE’S impact
They would've brought Melo off the bench. Y'all Melo haters something else
J Leww facts
As a pistons fan We finally got coverage years later they used to hate the pistons we got no tv coverage back then
At 1:01 I thought max was gonna cry. Hurt my feelings lol
Why do all the hot women live in the USA? xD
@@NeoMicy noooo not true. all over the world especially in europe theirs lots of hotties. go take a trip to europe or south america and check out dem hotties. bring one home or a couple your preference. its worth your money. I live in Cali so I get to see the hot cali blondes everywhere.
Love how Stephen A. Says don’t get me started and proceeds to start😂😂😂
It’s funny because they literally have nothing to talk about
Max have something personal against Melo I’m convinced lol
Yeah cause he never brought the knicks anywhere
Toddy McGann be bought them to their first playoff series win since 2002. That was the only time he had an actual team around him
He's scarred by the mismanagement of the Knicks and Melo's selfishness is the epitome of post golden-age Knicks that don't care about winning. Max grew up in New York and he knows a selfish player when he sees one.
austin78993 how was melo selfish? Let me guess “he KicKed LiN oUt”
kiyan west and meanwhile lebron who got his coaches fired and tried to get spo fired is viewed as unselfish. These media narratives have gotta stop
I'm given you knowledge, fall back 😂😂😂
Max really is such a downgrade from skip. He has ruined first take
2kdwightboy first take was already ruined
if the Pistons had caught him we would have another 2 titles it hurts a piston fan to see the Bulls with 6 titles and we only have 3 because they come down to Jordan, and we've always had competitive teams throughout history
Some guys are just not champions; Melo, CP3, Charles Barkley it always seems like something will happen and they don't win, that Larry O'Brian trophy is just allergic to them
Dumb comment, Melo would have a Ring Ef Pistons Organization wasn’t Clueless, So Your point automatically invalid
I agree with Max lowkey.. To put Melo on that team you have to remove somebody.. that makes that squad weaker 💯 this ain’t nba2K this real life.. just inserting good players don’t make you a guaranteed championship team
People making it seem SO OBVIOUS that Melo would win a chip is just pointing out the obvious that Melo is better than Darko, if we just think this way there is no need for a discussion. Max was actually going deeper and considering more factors whether you ultimately agree or not.
Melo gves the piston more scoring even if the pistons already have defense they still need scoring melo would have made them a dynasty. And the pistons would have made melo a greater player
" I love you son"
Stephan a: "Mom your wrong n here's why"
This is a great Debate. More like these.
Max clearly doesnt know basketball
Why do they constantly talk about this man when he hasn't done anything newsworthy in years?
Melo won the ncaa so he was good already, he would've provided scoring alongside all those defensive titans at detroit,
Why have i delved into ESPN arguments from 3 years ago
Melo on that team would’ve been dynastic.
Or he would of lost in the first round like he always does
Lmao @Max shaking his head no to SAS asking him did you watch the pistons🤣🤣🤣
Max Kellerman face at the end cracks me up lol
