If you watch how hendrix performed this at Woodstock hes doing the same thing hes not messing up the improv the guitar crashing is to symbolize the bombs we set off during wars
+Wayne Dorsey You have not heard Jimi Hendrix's version from Woodstock 1969? Look it up. This is a pale-white copy. By the way R & B used to apply to Rhythm & Blues which was stolen to "invent" Rock 'n' Roll in the 1950's. A new genre should at least have a new name.
+John Malcolm I don't think he's trying to be Jimi...he's playing on a bass, for one thing. I liked it. As far as Rhythm and Blues was stolen? I like to think that rock and roll was country and r&b combined.
+Wayne Dorsey i get you. like seal's RnB in box matches, tho i do listen some extensions that do break appart from the main theme. He didnt looked sober either, ive seen him worse, and ive heard anthems worse, it was refreshing actually.
People saying it's disrespectful, yet Jimi Hendrix playing it was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen and was the most amazing thing for a lot of people, and Flea is obviously doing a similar thing. It was great and it's got nothing to do with being disrespectful. He was expressing the anthem through new light.
Some of the comments on this video are terrible. I feel sorry for those of you who watch this, and still find something to complain about. Flea is an inspiration for anyone who has ever picked up a bass, and should be respected for everything he's brought to the music industry.
Fuck that. No free passes in this life. I can give a fuck what someone did in 1989. With all his millions the least you can do is not fuck up our National Anthem.
If you can't hear those mistakes than your tone deaf. I would expect more from Flea. But of course all of his bias fans gush over it. "I literally do not know anything about music". Typical RUclips responce. You try to cement your point by making it personal. My initial comments weren't directed at you.
There are no mistakes. He meant to do every note. That happens after you've been playing for 40 years. A 'youtube response' is the dumbest thing I have ever heard since since you implied a guy who dominated the 90s and the 2000s hasn't been relevant since 1989. And if you weren't sounding dumb enough, you are actually saying your initial comments weren't directed at the person whose comment you responded to.
It's the dumbest thing you've heard? Your the one who made the comment douche bag. And I don't care what you say you're fucking tone deaf if you can't hear the mistakes. He's a mediocre talent at best. You can keep coming back with something clever or make more pointless personal attacks and it's never going to change the fact that this performance is awful. So go ahead say the same thing again using different words Einstein.
I never understood why people post dumb comments because it somehow counts as trolling when someone responds. Also, that sort of thing is hard to tell when it's delivered in plain RUclips comment text. I read it and thought you were serious too.

too bad they all like rap and will most likely never understand the skill, patience, and effort that goes into playing an instrument this well. The fact that the crowd had almost no reaction makes me want to cry this was amazing
I´m a football player and i can comfirm that almost all ppl from this sport are douchbags without a good taste in music... And it look like, that same goes to these..
Ok...just look up any interview with him talking about public enemy, or how he has played bass for young mc (and other rappers). No need to be a jerk about the truth just because some people who feel more "musically inclined" just because they like RHCP and flea's bass playing.
The easiest and dumbest and most overused comment about Flea or the RHCP's is that they don't wear shirts. How bout this: Flea is a damn good bass player!
I've got a lot of respect for Flea... He's maybe the main reason I play the bass but he's not that good. He is more acting than playing and lots of people you've never heard of are better than him but he's done a lot and have inspired many people!
I agree, but Flea is definitely not 'acting more than playing". He would never act to make it "more interesting". His playing is more feeling than technical, but same, the man has a monstruous control of his playing and its "crazy" because its genuine, sincere. Its just him.
Why are people saying this is offensive to the United States for flea to add those riffs. What would be offensive is if FLEA played it WITHOUT the awesome riffs.
boori pryor He actually moved to NYC when he was five. If you asked Flea what his nationality is, he would probably say human, and think all this arguing is silly.
Brilliant. Nuanced. Not American Idol. Popular music is in the dark ages and most people listen to the radio to guide the development of their tastes. Hence, this array of notes and expression may have seemed bewildering to the poorly and corporately trained ear. Flea is a real musician, an alchemist, a mystic. If hearing this, for you, brought about a reaction not unlike hanging garlic around a vampires neck, I am talking to you.
If anyone gets a chance look up Thomas Paine. He wrote Common Sense, Rights of Man, Age of Reason and the American Crisis. Another good author is Thomas Hobbes. Thomas Hobbes wrote Leviathan. Also you have the stamp act and the boston tea party.
Imagine is cliff burton did the national anthem with his bass cranked up🤘🏻🎸and head banging to the most badass national anthem 🤘🏻with that jean jacket and misfits shirt🤘🏻🤘🏻
Wow! He missed a note!!! Hendrix never did that! Oh wait... he did, in every show he ever played, multiple times. He just bent the note until it was back in key. Flea missed one note, a very brief passing note. There is no opportunity to bend around something like that. (It was only noticeable because it was a solo performance too. If the Chilli's were playing along, no one would have noticed.) He could have just gone into an improvised flurry of notes again like he did elsewhere (another Hendrix move to cover bad notes), but I think that would have annoyed people even more. He only did his flourishes at points in the song when many vocalists also do the same, where there is an intensity in the music to deliver. Compare his performance with Mariah Carey. She is an extremely talented vocalist, but she uses so much miasma (look it up) that she is often nowhere near the tune, whatever she is singing. I have heard her do the Star Spangled Banner with so much variance from the melody it was at points unrecognizable, but she is more mainstream, and people just call it talent or expression. Flea is at that same level. He is not mainstream though. This was talent and expression. There are also a lot of complaints about his tone. This was a basketball arena, not a recording studio. His amp did not appear to be directly miked. The acoustics were horrible. The guy is a genius, a legend among rock musicians and fans. If you don't relate to his performance, that's ok; someone more to your taste will probably perform at the next game. (They might even do a rap version!) But give Flea his due. People who know and appreciate his art connect with this stuff. Maybe this wasn't his most stunning performance ever, but it was stunning nonetheless!
+dcs002 Firstly, malisma, not miasma (that means a bad smell). Secondly, RHCP are pretty mainstream. They're not in the charts, but most people who care even a little about music have heard (or heard of) them. Thirdly, I didn't think this was the worst performance of SSB, but comparing it to Hendrix is only true to the extent that they both made mistakes. Hendrix's performance of this had a point, it was a political statement, and he conveyed that. The context (Woodstock, '69) supports this. Flea is here playing to a set 'showoff' formula - soulful, respectful section; wig-out, play fast section; and bluesy finish. He's showing off before a basketball game. Again, I enjoyed some of it (sections 1 and 3 specifically) but Hendrix's mistakes don't absolve all mistakes
It seems to me a good interpretation with a lot of feeling and creativity! I think if you call Flea to play the anthem, it's to sound like flea style and not the same as the original, right? See hendrix... Also, people liked it
Started with melody and a chord solo arrangement like a guitar, f'd it up,LOL, than played melody than did some blues soloing in-between the melody, what a player to pull off the mistakes with pure power and rock and roll spirit, and still be composed to finish strong. He must have been extra nervous player for NBS fans.
I never understood why people try to justify criticism by saying that. It's like saying you have to be a chef to know that food tastes good. Nonmusicians are capable of evaluating things they do or don't like in music.
I can argue with it. I didn't like it, too much shredding going on and fancy shit. You can have a complicated piece of music with bends, chords, slap, hammer-ons and pull-offs, but it sounds shit. Sometimes simple is better. And hey, you don't have to be a chef to know if the food tastes good or bad fam.
Sure, it’s kinda “lame” for a national anthem, but in the context of it being a bass solo played by flea it seems a lot better. I will agree that the scale / run at 0:59 was kinda atrocious.
when people hate of fleas 2016 national anthem i understand , i dont think the effects he used were appropriate for the anthem at all... when people hate on this one, they just dont know anything about good music hahaha
Erlichman how can it suck? Does the national need to be played the same way every single time? That'd just be boring lol. I'd understand if you just have the opinion of not liking that kind of bass funk he was adding in, but if you coming from some other point of view like I see some other people in the comments, Jimi Hendrix did the same thing at Woodstock in '69. But for real though flea just a little twist every now and then is great.
He wanted to just go crazy so badly😂
Hes like a hill Billy in an upper class dinner
Caleb Thiesen 0:55
I love it
He wanted to slap the shhhht out of that base 😆 lol
He can't help himself to do some crazy licks and impro'
Plénitude Amnésique shouldve slapped

He actually messes up some notes at 0:26, I think for some reason he was very nervous. Wish he didn't step on the distortion pedal either :(
cool I love it

This is a Jimi Hendrix tribute. Flea is making war sounds with the bass. Righteous
TheYummyBurrito he actually was, he mentioned it
@TheYummyBurrito so you are putting flea and bad improvisation on the same line? Dude you got problems
TheYummyBurrito what does a burrito know about bass improvisation?
@LarryG It wasn't. Flea didn't play guitar.
@TheYummyBurrito I liked it, therefore it was good.
I don't believe it's him... He's wearing a shirt.

They actually try cancelling out the crowd's noise. So during shows like in halftime you can barely hear any cheers
and now imagine how Cliff Burton would play it??
Combustible Bunny I Know that it hurts but is a Good idea imagine it
there are videos of that
JmBassPow playing the U.S.A anthem??
David Gómez The night before he died he played a bass solo which was The National Anthem
David Gómez cliff sucked
If you want Hendrix, go listen to it. This is a valiant delivery on bass that stands its own ground rightously. I think Jimi would dig it.
TheYummyBurrito facts
this isn't a good performance
Jimi would 1,000% dig it!

Yikes.
Absolutely one of the greatest bass guitar players of our time
The beginning was very baroque. Then he went into a cool Jimi Hendrix thing.
Hendrix didnt hit a bunch of bad notes.
Hendrix totally hit a bunch of bad notes and it made it amazing
John Mackens “bad” notes? no notes are bad.
Hendrix constantly embellished everything and it was beautiful!

This popped up right when Kobe died RIP
Ha lol
Fuck kobe were here to see flea not Kobe
Kobe was overrated anyways
Yeah, like they all said... Fuck Kobe! What has he ever done with his life that could compare to an internet troll? Silly fools... I mean trolls!
ahahahah i expected The National Anthem from Radiohead
That would be the ultimate insult to America.
America doesn't deserve Radiohead.
That'd be the ultimate insult to Radiohead
Hahahahahahaha I though that too... And all haters of Radiohead are idiots, the majority only listened to Creep. I'm a great fan of RHCP and Radiohead
radiohead is too good to have something to do with USA
I have never even imagined this with simply a bass. I love it!
I thought this was cool, who says the national anthem always has to be performed the same way every time?
Ben Lubeck EXACTLY
Ben Lubeck you must feel the song and let your art fly! Flea got it right
Ben Lubeck plus it's just a variant of anacreontic song anyways
The Constitution
Who said it had to be good?
Flea looks extremely pleased at his performance and his desire to please the audience.
Flea is the only person who can make the us anthem entertaining
what about jimi hendrix?
*****
That is the most RETARDED comment I have ever read. That just made me stupid reading that.

@IPA SOLÉ u do realize jimi played the national anthem at woodstock right?
hell no, and this is one of the worst performances of the national anthem
Flea is a beast bassist, this man never grow old

Astroman96 but it sounded horrible. I'm a guitarist/bassist and what Flea did was dumb
yeah i agree
I’m as traditional and patriotic as they come, but I’m all for improvisation on the national anthem at sporting events. It just makes it more badass
Damn that final major pentatonic lick was hot

It seems to me a good interpretation with a lot of feeling and creativity! I think if you call Flea to play the anthem, it's to sound like flea style and not the same as the original, right? See hendrix... Also, people liked it
Started with melody and a chord solo arrangement like a guitar, f'd it up,LOL, than played melody than did some blues soloing in-between the melody, what a player to pull off the mistakes with pure power and rock and roll spirit, and still be composed to finish strong. He must have been extra nervous player for NBS fans.
A rare sighting of a tame Flea.

Thanks man
I see a few Ppl talk about how "bad" the performance was on this vid, but imagine how much worse it could have been if it was YOU
+Michael Scarn Whelp, can't argue with that.
i liked this performance a lot, but wow nice fat logical fallacy you got there, buddy
This makes no sense
I never understood why people try to justify criticism by saying that. It's like saying you have to be a chef to know that food tastes good. Nonmusicians are capable of evaluating things they do or don't like in music.
I can argue with it. I didn't like it, too much shredding going on and fancy shit. You can have a complicated piece of music with bends, chords, slap, hammer-ons and pull-offs, but it sounds shit. Sometimes simple is better.
And hey, you don't have to be a chef to know if the food tastes good or bad fam.
Rip Kobe
At this point it’s just nice to see some respect for the anthem
Sure, it’s kinda “lame” for a national anthem, but in the context of it being a bass solo played by flea it seems a lot better. I will agree that the scale / run at 0:59 was kinda atrocious.
when people hate of fleas 2016 national anthem i understand , i dont think the effects he used were appropriate for the anthem at all... when people hate on this one, they just dont know anything about good music hahaha
Gennaro why choked all time best solo flea
Pink Floyd is awesome
Good time boy....good job
That seriously sucks but everybody love it because it's Flea. I like it too ! ♥
DFM Bass to be fair, he did flat a few notes... I mean all in all, it was a great performance though.
Erlichman actually this was fantastic
Erlichman What the fuck are you talking about? I am not very familiar with Flea and RHCP but this was fucking incredible.
RIP Kobe🙏
