      I am grown up in the beautiful mountains, so the sea is something very different. That is why I joint the navy and I had a great time. The sea is also beautiful and to visit other beautiful countries is great (and you get paid for the trip)... 😉😀

      There's a problem with those beards.
      During the Vietnam war the Navy experimented with letting the men grow beards. Then ... they had some fires on board ... which were really bad ... and the oxygen masks the damage control people were supposed to wear - wouldn't seal. After that - no more beards.
      There was a certain Austrian Corporal who got gassed in WWI because he had a big mustache that wouldn't allow his gas mask to seal. After that - he had a much smaller mustache.

If you’ve been on a boat the last 10 years, especially a boat like the Truman with as many hook ups and politics as there are, then you know warfare pins aren’t what they used to be. Today you just get your books, make connections to get them signed off, and then get the board questions off of someone and regurgitate answers. It’s not hard to get a pin anymore.

      @thinksnitch the displacement is not really important when classifying a ship as a destroyer or frigate. It's more about the capabilities. A frigate is usually built for a certain role like asw or aaw while a destroyer is a multi role combat ship. The f124 class is capable of fighting submarines, surface ships and aircrafts/missiles so it fits more in the criteria of a destroyer than a frigate.

      Women are not treated the same in the military. They can wear make up. They have maternity uniforms (since at any one point in time 25% of them are pregnant), they get maternity leave and are reassigned to shore duty.

      Crap you’re right they did change the name, my mistake.
      I was reading just the other week Germany’s last operational attack submarine suffered mechanical problems just after putting to sea and had to put back to port. No ETA on when she’ll put back to sea and all six attacks subs of the Deutsche Marine are now unable to go to sea. I’ve heard readiness problems like that are endemic in the German military, from aircraft to vehicles in a specific unit ready to go to the field.
      I have nothing but respect for the German military but then I read how some politicians in Berlin want to FURTHER slash their defense budget. I think Merkel is doing what she can and makes a good point about incremental defense spending. I’d personally like to see a slightly stronger German military.

    Why isn't the German navy bigger than it is?
    Why doesn't the German navy have large aircraft carriers?
    Are they restricted in some way post WW2?

    • @HingerlAlois
      @HingerlAlois 3 года назад

      Why would Germany want aircraft carriers?
      During the Cold War the front line was the German border, there’s no point for aircraft carriers if your only real potential enemy is next door...
      West Germany had at the end of the Cold War around 40 fast attack crafts (with Exocet missiles as their primary armament), a whole bunch of mine hunters (if I‘m not mistaken around 70), 20 attack submarines, some destroyers and frigates.
      The German Navy also had 112 Panavia Tornado fighter-bombers of its own for anti-shipping operations.
      Of course with the end of the Cold War the need for a large navy vanished and the focus shifted from fighting the Baltic Fleet of the Soviet Union and its allies to peacekeeping and fighting piracy...

    • @Exodon2020
      @Exodon2020 3 года назад

      Only restriction to weaponry is a ban on nuclear weapons coming from Germany being a signatory of the UN Nuclear non-proliferation treaty. This also includes nuclear propulsion technology on warships. So theoretically we could build an Aircraft Carrier as long as it is not powered by a nuclear reactor.
      At the moment Germany has no strategic need for its own carriers.

    • @lukas4866
      @lukas4866 2 года назад +1

      Germany kind of restricted itself by saying their miltary is only for defense purposes. Also, many german people dont want Germany to spend money on the military, so the budget is too low and every single bigger acquisition of the Bundeswehr has to be approved by the parliament.
