Man's romance for the steam engine will never die.
Bureaucrats will come and go and try to kill it before they go.
    But it will never die.

Is she double-heading with a Black 5? And LNER and LMS loco on THE GWR tracks 😮

    Why were two locomotives used?

    • @46115al

The need for increased power to combat the inclines of the South Devon Banks.(approx 500+ tons of coaches behind the engines)

Even regular modern trains have a two engine set for the West Country runs. New 802s have more powerful engines than the others for the same reason

To give added power over the South Devon Banks'. You will find that in real /proper Railway days(forget any modern train crap comments) that double heading occurred fairly regularly and that is when you use a 'Pilot Loco' (the one at the front) and the Train Engine which is immediately attached to the coaches . Both engines work in tandem and are a wonderful sight especially at night when the firebox glow effect applies (Reflection of Fire against the Steam that is passing over the train

46115al it's actually an operational requirement to have at least two motive power units of any kind to run on the track from Exeter to Plymouth which includes 3 of the 10 steepest inclines on the network. 60103 is simply not allowed to run as the sole locomotive in a train on the route in the same way than no other train is. It's nothing to do with nostalgia, coupling up another power unit at Exeter or Laira is quite normal so that in the event of a train needing to restart from rest on one of the "south devon bank" inclines it has the means to do so. For PR reasons it wasn't going to look good for Flying Scotsman to have a diesel set coupled up on its first ever run into Cornwall which is why a Black 5 was used.

Even the newest trains operate with two engines, one on the front one on the back more often than not. Apart from anything else it saves the hassle of having to swap a single engine from one end of the train to the other. They should all do it.
