      When the Office (US) is great, it's great, and comparable, if not surpassed the UK original. But it's like they forget the roots of it and that it's a mockumentary sometimes. The "actors" are aware of the cameras, because it's supposed to be real, but nobody's going to plan a murder in front of cameras. It just gets a bit silly sometimes, and becomes just another US sitcom, with outlandish, crazy things happening, rather than the mockumentary it's supposed to be. It's supposed to be funny but realistic.

      The point of a documentary is to witness what happens day-to-day. You can't interfere at all or it taints the whole foundation of the documentary. Brian basically fucked the whole thing up at the end of the series, because we needed to see how Pam deals with it naturally. Anyone who says Brian wasn't simping for her doesn't understand that he basically fucked his career for interfering.

They literally have Roy on camera saying he's going to murder Jim right after he got done going ballistic and destroying a bar, so there was no reason to doubt his sincerity. Then they see him just angrily pacing outside the building clearly waiting for someone, and they do... nothing. Seems like Dunder Mifflin at that point is going to be like "are you guys fucking kidding? In filmmaking, the cinematographer or director of photography (DP or DoP) is sometimes called lighting cameraman or first cameraman. The DP may operate the camera themselves, or enlist the aid of a camera operator or second cameraman to operate it or set the controls. The first assistant cameraman (1st AC), also known as a focus puller, is responsible for maintenance of the camera, such as clearing dirt from the film gate and adjusting the follow focus. A second assistant cameraman (2nd AC), also known as a clapper loader, might be employed to load film, slate scenes, or maintain the camera report (a log of scenes, takes, rolls, photographic filters used, and other production data)

      My idea on that moment was that, earlier that season in "Travelling Salesmen/The Return", when Andy pushed Dwight out of his job ,we see smug Andy in a talking head with Angela in the background looking vengeful. And letting Andy float away at Beach Games was her delayed revenge.

  • @jeffisaliar

    The mockumentary plot gets undermined a lot in the show. I guess they have no choice in order to grow on the plot. Michael, coming out of the bathroom, was not really alone. He did have the person holding the camera who also got abandoned in the process and said nothing to the guy in the Dodge who was asked to fill Michael in. Ultimately the way I see it is some of the cameras are acknowledged by the characters and some of them are like regular shows where it's like a fly on the wall and you're just being shown what's going on.

    i always wondered what would happen with all the felonies (or crimes in general) they commit on camera, when the show finally aired. for example, Michael committed a hit and run when he tried to parallel park with practically a bus of space. he hit a parked car, and drove off without leaving information. Kevin admitted to insider trading, and Jim and Dwight both created a fake sales person to get more commission than allotted.

    My favorite part of the office is when the camera man zoom in on Dwight while toby was making announcement in sexual harassment and when he zoom in on Dwight face because of his nose

  • @iminumst7827
    @iminumst7827 2 года назад +41

    If there's one thing I can say is a flaw throughout the office is the inconsistency in the mockumentary formula. For instance there are sometimes impossible cuts where the camera person is in one place then it cuts to a different angle and the cameraman isn't there, or sometimes the crew does not behave like a documentary crew would like this video shows. The show forgets that it's a mockumentary so often that the audience forgets too, and I imagine it was shocking for some when they showed the crew near the end of the show.
    Parks and Rec is worse in this regard, because it's even more inconsistent. Like they keep the talking heads and looking into the camera stuff, but other than that it's not treated like a documentary at all.

    • @Qvmmy
      @Qvmmy 2 года назад

      park n rec most likely not document but memorial if im not forgotten about crucial part of it.

    • @sixteeeeeen
      @sixteeeeeen 2 года назад +6

      I completely agree with the impossible cuts. I feel like after season 7, they really became carless with all these things. It made sense in certain scenes for the cameras being in unusual locations though, like in season 8 when Jim was literally running away from Robert California and ended up going to the roof, the explaintion for the camera being there was because they were with Creed. Or how in season 7, when Holly was looking for Micheal, a camera was already in the random building she entered was because it was following Micheal.
      But yeah, Parks and Rec was horrible when it came to the consistency of the camera angles, it really bugged me when I was watching the show.

    They can’t interfere. Would a nature documentary crew intervene to stop a gazelle from being eaten by a lion? No. You got to get the authentic experience. This was a look into the average, everyday office worker’s life. Intervening in any of these situations would ruin the authenticity of them.
