The Scousers singing Maggie's dead has a lot to do with her prime ministerial response to the Hillsborough tragedy where 97 Liverpool fans lost their lives due to police incompetence which her government colluded in the police coverup that followed. Outside of England chants its probably one of the few chants that most northern team's supporters would have joined in because any football fan in the north who lived through the Thatcher years hated the woman with a passion. Football is very tribal over here and using myself as an example as a lifelong Man City fan I have been inculcated to despise Man United, but when they are playing the Scouse teams (Liverpool or Everton) I rather they won (unless winning put them above City btw) because the intercity rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester trumps my dislike of United. This rivalry #between the two cities is very deep-rooted and goes back to before organised football existed and it's the same with other local rival cities like Newcastle and Sunderland.

Funny because Thatcher did more good for this country than anyone since Churchill. Blame the unions and the socialists for the state of the North. I’m working class through and through and it was cool to hate Thatcher when I was a kid - I didn’t really know why. As I got older I realised I was totally and utterly ignorant. The woman was an intellectual giant with balls of steel who gave this country back its mojo. Go back and watch some of her interviews - clear thinking, straight talking, principled and hugely knowledgeable. Modern politicians are pygmies in comparison.

When a colleague informed me at work that Maggies Thatch had kicked the bucked I stood up and and chanted: "Maggie maggie maggie dead dead dead, maggie dead, maggie dead, maggie maggie maggie dead dead dead". My managing director looked most confused at his head of Global procurement that day.
Chants like that, along with their historical support of the IRA is why Liverpool fans are detested by the vast majority of English supporters. Despite what the media would have you believe.

"Maggie" refers to Maggies Thatch who after police incompetence at an FA cup semi-final in Sheffield led to the deaths of dozens of Liverpool fans the following morning referred to Scousers as "animals" and then proceeded to cover up the events and protect the police in charge from prosecution. She also had already destroyed the economy of Liverpool itself, part of the UK's 2nd largest urban conurbation after London, leading to 2 decades of extreme poverty in Merseyside. To say she was (still is, nothing forgotten let alone forgiven) hated by Scousers is an understatement on the level of saying WW2 was a minor skirmish.

As a Scouser I'm not in the least bit offended. The Conservative Margaret Thatcher killed a lot of industry in Liverpool in the 80's and she seemed to take pleasure in it. Liverpool has always been and still is a Labour strong hold.
As much as I love the Robin chant, I don't know if it should be considered top 10 most vile, I'd say the songs about Adebayor should be ahead of it, same with the Norwich/Kiddy family, as well as a lot of other championship/league one/two chants

Well… if you weren’t playing yourself, you’d be out there part of the chant. The brilliant part of it is, there’s no bar written. There exists formulas, but a random bloke can just start spouting, and before you know it, everyone is on board. There’s a structure, but it’s improvised. It’s unique to England’s football culture.
I would say the Adebayor chant (not in this video) is more vile then all of these.

There is no context behind the chants . You really need to know the context behind them . But we do do the best chants .
Most of these require context but generally speaking abusive chants are expected and tolerated in football. It's kind of a war zone, in a way. If you can come up with an incredibly specific and abusive chant you occasionally get applauded by the opposition too. If an opposition player has done something particularly heinous (Adam Johnson had sex with a 15 year old when his fiancé was pregnant, Tevez is a mercenary, etc.) then they will be mercilessly targeted. Derby games are just cruelty marathons. Non-League games are absolutely savage because the fans are more or less on the pitch. The amount of shit that goalkeepers have to endure when they're at the home end is utterly brutal and from only feet away and for a solid 45 minutes. You have to understand, though, that most of us have been playing this game since we started primary school and the culture begins then (age 5/6) so this is something we've had all our lives. It does sound incredibly hostile but it's rarely meant that way. *(Margaret Thatcher was the nazi prime minister of Britain in the 80's. When she died many people went to the streets to chant "Ding Dong , the witch is dead" (from The Wizard of Oz). Only super right wing toffs mourned her loss. Her policies particularly affected the north west, hence why Man U fans were celebrating her death).

I don't follower the soccer, I'm an Aussie & we have 4 footy codes being Aussie Rules, Rugby League then Rugby Union followed way way way by soccer. We aren't as brutal as the poms but we have pretty much the same sense of humour, the laid back, taken the piss out of everyone but I've watched a few American's reaction to these chants & the shock & dismay of the chants on ya faces are priceless. I could not imagine seeing American crowds doing these sorta chants. Countries like England, mine & NZ for eg aren't offended coz of our humour & don't takes things too seriously but I'd imagine, esp with all the woke shit these days that American's would take it offensively as America's humour is completely in the other direction

All Football players have to play even if you're club's fans or the away fans are chanting things that you find horrible, you still have to play and you can't refuse. All Football fans in the UK plus Western and Eastern Europe also pick on players if you have not played well, made mistakes or you have been signed from a club that is hated. If you refuse to play then the club that you play for will discipline you by finding you a couple of weeks or month's wages, then the league that you play in will ban you from playing for a length of time and find you money as well, then the European governing body of football (UEFA) could also be involved by banning you for a length of time and if you play for your country's national team then FIFA which is the world governing body for football could ban you for playing for your country and ban you from playing in international games and competition's like the World cup. So as a Football player you have to have thick skin and just play the game. I remember a bloke exactly like you that played for a Football club here in England called Nottingham Forest Football Club, and he had a hair style exactly like yours and boy did he get the piss taken out of him by us Chelsea FC fans.
