  • Launching services in December 1998, Norwegian Capricorn Line was an Australian cruise brand that ran for just than 22 months! The organisation utilised the NCL logo, but traded under a revised Norwegian Capricorn name. Services were operated in close partnership with NCL, with cross promotion on both organisations websites. To establish services, Norwegian Capricorn Line chartered the NCL cruise ship Norwegian Star.

Did you ever sail on Norwegian Capricorn?

Great video Chris. I had forgotten about Norweigan Capricorn line. Other failed Australian ventures would be of interest. One that springs to mind is the Blue Funnel line's Princess Mahsuri. The Princess Mahsuri was a small luxury ship that sailed out of Sydney between around 1982 - 85. I actually got to go on her when she was visiting Hobart, and I remember she had capacity for around 330 passengers. She was a very nice ship, quite luxurious compared to say, the Oriana. I believe the Princess Mahsuri is still sailing today under another name.

Thank you for the video. I remember years ago, I forget when, a ship called Dolphin was announced and even advertised but it never turned up! I have always wondered what happened to it!

Thank you Chris for the video. I was fortunate enough to sail with Norwegian Capricorn Line on a very unique itinerary round trip from Sydney to Tasmania. I believe it had never been done before nor repeated since by a 'large' cruise ship. We spent a day at anchor in Port Davey, returned to Hobart via the d'Entrecasteaux channel and then spent another day at anchor off Coles Bay. I also cruised on another ship that Sarina Bratton was involved with - Cunard Crown Monarch - Sydney to Cairns via Noumea, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. How I miss the smaller ships with interesting local itineraries. I'm sure there would be a market for them.

Thank you Chris I never sailed on Norwegian Capricorn or new about the ship, I have sailed on
P&O Oriana Fair Star . I listened to someone else and he reported Australia has the most expensive port charges and few other thins that make it hard for P&O to make a profit.
Same reason the ferry Melbourne to Tasmania left Melbourne to Geelong to expensive .

Another well-produced, informative video, Chris! Thank you for all you do. I remember that as a "blip" in the ship's long career. Cunard also sent the MONARCH down under a few years earlier and that ended rather quickly too.

We travelled twice on Norwegian Star in Dec 1999 Cairns to Sydney and July 2000 Sydney to Darwin via Pacific Islands it was a nice friendly ship with like you said only 800 passengers. We had done 4 cruises prior to these but it was this ship that sold us on cruising.

Thanks for that information, Chris. I don't remember the Norwegian Capricorn Line. Did they ever call at Fremantle?

I am not 100% sure but I *think* they did one extended voyage to Fremantle but it may have been the repositioning cruise when she moved to Star Cruises.
