- It feels strange to be talking about 'The Polar Express' while there's still so much colour in the trees, but winter is almost upon us, and with it comes the festive season.
The sound of bells jingling is on the horizon once again, as preserved railways across the UK gear up for Christmas with a variety of special services. While the vast majority are operating iterations of the train of lights concept, the South Devon Railway is playing host to 'The Polar Express'. The 2004 film has become a modern classic, as such its recreation is proving to be incredibly popular; all scheduled Polar Express trips on the SDR have sold out, despite the high volume of spaces offered.
To recreate the look of the locomotive from the film, 7820 "Dinmore Manor" has received some modifications: A cow-catcher, headlamp, bell, and mild identity changes have all been carried out, with the 'Manor' displaying 1225 and 'Polar Express' on the fireman's side. In addition, both 7820 and 5542 have been fitted with chime whistles for the duration of the event.
Locomotives:
GWR 4575 'Small Prairie' Class - 5542
BR(W) 7800 'Manor' Class - 7820 "Dinmore Manor"
All footage filmed on Sunday the 21st of November 2021.
I'm loving the sound of my chime whistle (on the Manor) in this video 🙂
It's a great Chime. Nice to hear something a little different on the SDR - so thank you for your work!
7820 looks magnificent to try and disguise itself as the USA Engine
Nicely done, I hope the Polar Express is a massive success, giving the railway's finances a much needed boost after the damaging effects Covid has had on passenger numbers over the last two years.
Certainly seems to be a success so far, with all services sold out, and plenty of positive reviews - hopefully translating into good income.
@@TheSouthernerYTChannel That's good to hear.
Some great coverage here. Love what they've done with Dinmore, it looks the part but isn't too over the top. Your video and some i've seen from other users have really made it look a fun event that families will love!
Thanks very much, Declan! Agree with you, the modifications to Dinmore look great but not excessive. And it's all good income for the railway.
Not sure that I like the spoked pilot but it's great to see well maintained steam - and the autumn trees were gorgeous!
Night time shots were good!!! (You know where I'm coming from, don't want to upset anyone!!!) 👍🏻👍🏻
Well played, Bob. Well played.
Dreamlike ❤
Nice to see a 4-6-0 back on the Buckfastleigh line. Glad to see they haven't gone over the top with the let's-pretend-it's-American and totally spoiled the looks of it. That shot from 01:20 is awesome, when the sun goes in where you're filming but still illuminates the steam.
it looks so clean with the cowcatcher and smokebox light
Brilliant footage Matthew. Personally I am for this Polar Expresses. Heritage Railways need to cover their operating costs, and if these trips bring in lots of money then so be it.
south devon railway passengers aboard Santa Polar Express brand new for 2021 is than Christmas Specials.
I wanna know how on earth the driver can see at night because with the glow of the fire it sort makes a glare and makes your pupils small restricting the distance you can see into the darkness
At night the driver will try not to lose his night vision by looking at the fire. With the led lamps and the big Polar headlamp, the track ahead is quite well lit up anyway.
Great video! May I ask what camera you use?
Cheers! Panasonic HC-V770
Well done video with The Polar Express :)
Thank you
