  • Jerome receives a Ficus Benjamina that hasn't been repotted in 14 years. A challenge indeed! He treats the tree, repots, and share his vision of it with you. He shows you the tools and supplies needed in the process. Enjoy!

    Looking at it from the view of the camera. I think you should make two separate sections of the tree. It looks like the part with the stairs could be a little animal house 🏡 and the other half could become the dark and scary woods or the bright and happy woods. Have you ever done a fantasy bonsai?

    Love the long term concept for this tree. A question, I have always been told that if you cut off all green and every terminal bud on a Benjamina then the branch or trunk will most likely die. That they don’t behave like other ficus. I saw you cut drastically on a couple of the branches and main trunk eliminating all green and terminal buds. Just wondered your thoughts on this. Thank you for great videos. Really enjoy them.

      Charles McKe hey Charles! You are right about Benjamina’s not responding the same as other ficus and are a lot more fussy! What you did not see in the video is that the tree was already pushing new buds and I cut above them.

    Hello Jerome , How is this tree coming up? I think this tree could have more character like a dinosaur sitting with its extended neck, you would have to cut all the branches u r thinking of as trunks, and leave only the 2 which r opposite the right angled one. of course this is just a thought. always enjoy watching ur videos n learning from them. Hey Jerome, great tree, man. My wife is vietnamese and we go there about once every couple of years. They have such great bonsai over there.....amazing ficus, bougainvilleas, and wrightia religiosa., just to name a few. I would love to bring something back, but, have no idea how to go about doing that.(you mentioned that tree came from Vietnam and I know by someone else) Great job, man, as you always do. Thank you.

    Hi Jerome. I love your videos. I don't know if you'll see this comment almost two years from its posting, but have you changed the composition of your bonsai soil since making this video, and if so, why?
    Thank you so much and keep up with the fantastic videos. I learn a lot from your videos and Q&A.

    • @WeareTheBonsaiSupply
      @WeareTheBonsaiSupply  4 года назад

      Hey Scott, Thank you for your kind words:) I did change the composition a tiny bit, instead of red lava rock we now use black, I think it is more pleasing to the eye and blends in better with the bonsais. We also removed the charcoal as I don't find it does its job properly and replaced it with pine bark since it is much better at retaining the nutrients when you fertilize. The expanded clay was also removed as that was just a filler. Now we use Black Lava, Pumice, Calcined Clay and Pine Bark, I find it is a great soil mixture now.

    Hey Jerome, how long did it take for yours to back bud? I chopped off 3 of 5 trunks off of mine, and cut off the tops of the remaining two, leaving some foliage. It’s been about 2.5 months now and I’ve got nothing goin on. The tree is still alive and producing new foliage, just not anywhere further back on the branches or trunks. Kinda stuck right now and getting really frustrated. Thanks!

    • @WeareTheBonsaiSupply

    Beautiful old tree.....except I'm not a fan of that almost perfect 90 degree angle branch. Are you sure Ficus benjamina will backbud on the bare branches? I have one that is about 25 years old and it seems to only grow from the tips of branches......but I am in a much drier temperate climate so maybe things are different in the high humidity of Florida. Even daily misting hasn't produced backbuds on the trunk for me....and I wish it would....no pun intended.

    You could have gone back much farther. I should talk though. Mine is the same age in the same pot I put it in a decade ago or more..and its 3' and 1' wide or so. Its also got a heavy growth of Adiantum hispidum at the base. I gave up on Ficus "clouds"..too hard to keep them like that. Just go with a hemisphere!
