That's why Southpark had an episode in which the MALE judges ended up "pleasuring themselves" under the table during the pageant clearly suggesting they are pedophiles.
A lot of American bread, for example the bread used by Subway, is technically classed as cake here in Ireland because of the sugar content.
reading that made me think of that famous "quote" by marie antoinette where she (allegedly) said: "then give them cakes" when confronted with starving peasants before/during the french revolution

Side note : the original french quote is "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche !", I never understood why the english version of that quote had "brioche" translated to "cake".

Things about the US we don't understand: -Expensive healthcare -Guns, wars and violence -Lawful corruption -A strong feeling of not helping others, often via taxes (the "bootstrap" philosophy: "If I could make it on my own without help, why should anybody else get any help."-kind of thing). Those are the important ones.

I often used to fly over to visit Naples Florida over Christmas from the UK. I used to arrive on December 10th and return home January 10th. Suntanned and relaxed. My local Floridian friends used to think I was super rich until I informed them we in the UK are entitled to 28 days PAID Vacation days per year.
i wouldn't take ALL my annual holiday in one go. even if i could afford a month in Florida ! I'm a london working man, and i don't think i'm poor....lol
In my company everyone gets 30 days Paid Vacation and in addition to the national holidays my company has 2 additional holidays each year and let's not forget sick day here in Germany are paid too and do not count against your Vacation days like most of the time in the US.
@@Rafaela_S. in russia you get 28 days minimum (could be double in northern regions), and national holidays include around 8-9 days on new year, 2 batches of 3-4 days in may, and the odd day off here and there. Sick days are paid, but at a lower rate. This problem however eases into the background these days sadly.

In Australia you get 4 weeks paid vacation per year..
But here is the kicker.. you get a 17.5% bonus on the 4 weeks pay...
When we watch a US TV show on BBC that doesn't show adverts and they say welcome for the next hour, and it's finished in 40 minutes or less.
Yess 😆or you can tell where the cuts for commercials used to be and then they havent been able to splice it together naturally. And you have the constant story repeated 5 times in one show. Particularly talk shows😅
i've noticed that with stuff like family guy... i often watch it on itv catch-up, i thought every episode was a half hour show, but i've noticed it's actually on for about 23 minutes! :-'D
When my auntie went to the US a few years ago she said it wasn't just the portion size that was out of control but what people were eating. She stayed with her friend's family and she said she didn't see a fresh vegetable the whole 2 weeks. They'd eat carbs with carbs, carbs with protein, carbs with carbs for dessert but no fibre. Nobody seemed to eat any salad or veggies with their meals. Which baffles me. I mean I like unhealthy food too, but I always try to balance it out to make sure I'm getting carbs, protein and fibre in every meal at least 😑 not saying all American eat unbalanced diets obviously.
Just look at McDonald's. 8.99 for a salad. 4.99 for a burger. Fruits and veggies have always been more expensive.
I did route 66 back in 1985.. and American portions size where Huge back then..
American cars are fitted with fat person airbags..
Same Japanese cars sold elsewhere have smaller airbags..
I have to say I agree with this observation. My step-daughter stayed with her partner and was shocked at the lack of fresh produce. When she offered to make some mash and asked where the the potatoes were, her partner's mother handed her a can of mash potatoes.
She was also amazed at the amount of things that was candied.

We *do* have HOA in Europe, however it is not so insane as in the US.
It is normally a fund to pay for costs in shared area, like elevator maintenance or upkeep of shared private parking area for condos.
I never heard we had it for houses that have no shared facilities. And they are not telling you what you can and can't do.
My estate has a residence association. All you do is pay a yearly fee and that covers maintenance of the shared green space. That's it. No telling you what you can't do with your own property.
Edit: and it's voluntary.
Yeah Is not as insane as the american ones . I live in an apartment building and we have an owners Association but we pay the salary of the administrator , the cleaning lady and any repairs neccessary for the shared spaces like the roof or the pipes in the basement. And decisions are made at a meeting held with all owners by vote.

One side of my grandparents bought an anpartment.
There were 5 other apartments sold to different people.
All parties who baiught an apartment had to found an "HOA".
It is for discussion on the maintance of the whole building, the shared property like staircase and parking lot and so on.
For certain things they can tell you what not do to. All things that are a permament change to the building.
Denmark is full of them, but then again its full of associations and unions for everything.
Spain here. We also have them here but beside some indivuduals who go insane and think the were elected to a presidentship extended to the country. 😁

It is funny that here in the UK we get forced to take paid holiday. I have had it on several occasions : It's the end of the year and I have like 8 days left of holiday to take. Don't think I have ever worked a full December in my life lol
If we had holidays left over at the end of the year, the company gave you the money instead.

Here in the UK BBC 2 caused a storm and outrage among parents when it did a documentary on the American Beauty competitions for kids in 1995. When it couldn't get any worse a year later one of the kids featured heavily in the documentary was none other than yep JonBenét Ramsey which only made the British public even more revolted by them...
In the Netherlands just like with the Homeowners Association you cannot just build whatever house you want in a neighbourhood. In general it has to blend in with the rest of the invironment. Big difference is that in my country the local government decides what is allowed or not. And you don't pay for a membership of any kind.
That is planning permission
Here in Hungary we only have that in the cities, and mostly (only?) in the historical parts, so that doesn't really affect people, unless you happen to live in an apartment in a historical house, in which case you're limited in exterior changes.
p.s.: They took it so "seriously" in my hometown, that they built a 4 story full on glass mall right next to some building older than the USA. Money talks after all
That's just a development plan. They exist in most European countries. They mandate the type of building you can build and in extreme cases might even prescribe certain materials or roof steepness.

When I was exchange student, I worried that I might have diabetes.. the ammount of sugar and sweetners in food and treats made me worry about that. Comming back to Norway made me feel healthier right away I even was tested for Diabetes upon return to Norway.. test was negative, but the dr understood my worry.
It's actually a myth that you can get diabetes from having too much sugar. It's not the sugar intake that causes it but having a lot of sugar intake can 'help" with the cause of diabetes
@@carimavandijk1091 I know, my point was that they use so much sugar in everything in the US that my blood sugar spiked at almost every meal, and I was and am used to a more level blood sugar value throughout the day.

With modern computerised tills/cash registers, that can be networked, there is no reason not to be able to have the ticket price be the one you pay at checkout. I bet it is down to the companies wanting to save money or some psychological BS that if tax is included on the price tag people will buy less stuff.

@@Cau_No the main reason for that one was originally actually to do with tax brackets. But it's absolutely certain that these days it's used quite deliberately exactly like you said, because they noticed that.

Food portions yeah, in 2003 I was on holiday in the US ( I am English). First stop Texas, Fort Worth. Friends took me for lunch in the Stockyards so of course I ordered steak ( Texas right?). The waitress bought plate after bowl to the table, I genuinely thought that it was for all 5 of us, nope it was all my meal.
Having lived in the USA for a while I figured the sales tax was not added to the ticket price because it would make it easy to compare prices; conversely, stores would argue their prices are "the same" as the store down the road, just the sales tax is more or less than the store down the road which makes tax included price comparisons unfair.
I saw ammo sold on the next aisle to bandages in Colorado.

@@101steel4 Believe it or not there is nothing stopping a US company from firing an employee for smoking tobacco at home if their company policy is a zero tollerance no smoking policy, and they fail a drug test for nicotine.
My son is in the French military. He gets 45 days paid leave per annum and is permitted to carry ten days over. This year he had 54 days holiday. He had the entire month of June off.
the company i own we have a computer system that every employee can view and check for available days, they can request days off or weeks off and its either allowed or comprises are made to keep the business running, but its very rare that anyone has their request denied, i mean i know when business drops off and so do the employee's they can request time off in that period, even if im short handed i can hire temp staff from one of the agencies in my area.
I remember being in the cantine of a large factory in Alabama for work. They had a huge food court inside, mostly unhealthy. There was a salad bar I mostly used that was super expensive. A few times I tried indulging in the other offers and encountered some weird stuff:
- I ordered a sandwich, the dude behind the counter opened a package of ham and put half the package on the bread. To which I said, could you take that off and just leave two slices? That is way to much ham. The guy looked at me and said, nope while handing me the sandwich. Which was like 20% bread, 20% cheese, 5% lettuce and tomato, 5% condiments and the rest was ham. I took most of the ham off and gave it to some colleges who brought a loaf of bread.
- I ordered these amazing chilly dogs. I looked at the plate people where getting FOR LUNCH and said. Give me one Chilly dog hold the potato chips (Yes potato chips is a part of a meal in the US ;( Not fries, no lays chips for instance...). They replied, no custom order. So I said, well just forget to put the second chilly dog and the chips onto the plate I don't mind paying full price either, it'll still be much cheaper then yesterdays salad. He said, well if you only want one just throw the other and the chips in the trash. So when I angrily told the guy behind the counter YOU DO NOT PUT food in the garbage! In the end I found a college who wanted to eat the leftover chilly dog and some of the chips were eaten by the people at the table.

In France we still have sorts of homeowner associations, in buildings you have your part to pay for the cleaning, repairs etc... of the common areas but for the houses our municipalities decides where you can build your house and how (you must respect the image of the town) same when you do some work to do on your house like an extension, a pool or even a garden shed, they must give you an authorisation or you have to destroy it.
I have been in Texas once for few weeks, and not aware of the tip practice, so first time in a restaurant when paying the bills, I have hard time to understand the concept. The waitress patiently explain it to me, but my brain was refusing to accept the concept that waitress cannot live on their salary, they have to get the tips to simply live. Owners don't offer a salary for their employee to live.
Food size is also a real thing, as the taste. In a steak restaurant, the Grilled T-Bone steak was huge, watery, tasteless, chewy. No offense but it was the most disgusting steak I ever ate.
And what is with frying and grilling everything, It was so hard to find food not cooked that way.
But public transportation was the nail in the coffin, where was public transportation?

I had the same experience, ive never had a steak anything like that, I spent 2 weeks eating rice, thats the only thing they dont mess up, well not to much anyway, love from the UK
It's the Texas longhorn cattle. They graze on poor quality land, so the meat is poor quality also
@@Charlie3vans And yet Australian cattle graze on pretty poor pastures/scrubland too and their beef is superb. I've only ever eaten two sorts of beef that are better than Aussie beef and that's beef in Madeira and in Japan - and in both those cases the cattle are usually stabled. I'm told that Argentine beef is also good but haven't been there to try it. One problem with beef in the US is that they use growth hormones to make the cattle bigger, and antibiotics to cover up diseases - yuck!

@@JohanHultin America is definitely not compatible with a fun life. There's fun stuff to do but you gotta be earning to get to that stuff. Similar in the UK & EU and the rest of the world but there's a lower barrier of entry to good times than in work to live america.

It's not just Euros are confused by American-style homeowners association bs. Context: here in PH, land developers try to sell lots to a big subdivision in a nice area that people can then build houses and stuff on as an eventual family home or retirement home. The one my brother got was up in the cooler mountains, which is a big draw when you're in an eternally hot tropical country. These would normally have a modestly large convention/function hall and/or pool area which serves as the moneymaker while the land developers are gathering investors for homes. These halls and/or pools can be rented out for a fee as long as you're in the know with someone's who's bought a house/plot.
Anyway, some people already had houses built up and were living in their assigned homes, with quite a few being foreigners using their retirement nest eggs for a home in PH. My brother was getting his family home built on one plot, and told us a story of Americans constantly complaining to the land developers that the communal area was constantly noisy and want to create a homeowner's association to police that...despite the communal area being reasonably far away from any house plot (built up or otherwise), and the fact that it's common to have as many as 10 open, unused plots in between you and your closest neighbor, in multiple directions, at this time.

I just watched a film called “Little Miss Sunshine” which was based around some people trying to attend a child beauty pageant. It was much more like a paedophiles marketing strategy advertisement.
There is no reason why we can't list the total price on the actual price tag. The system knows how much the tax is for that item and location, they just don't want to put it in on the tag so they make it look cheaper.
In Italy to have a hunt gun you need mental health, criminal, and other checks, after that you will have to renew your licence for a hunting weapon every 5 years. To have a personal firearm for protection or shooting at range you have to do some more checks and renew the licence every year, you cannot have more than one firearm unless you have a collectors licence. And also if I'm correct you cannot have anything above your basic pistol or a hunting rifle (depending on what licence you got). Only ex military/police are able to get a licence for a stronger weapon..maybe..I don't remember for sure if they can.
None of this shockes me, I'm in my 60s so have been aware of all this for many years. It doesn't shock me that nothing has changed because sadly the $ is the boss. It's really rather sad that a country like the US treats people so badly when it doesn't need to. I don't think it will ever change as it is so deeply engraned in US society. I do need to add though, no country is perfect.

@@Cau_No Well in the US prisoners are legally slaves. There is no requirement to financially compensate them for their labour, and they cannot refuse to work either. This is mainly how prisons profit from having prisoners.
Trust me, advertising in television as an issue is not restricted to the US - I stopped watching mainstream television here in Australia years ago because of the constant interruption of ads and because shows were being clipped in order to enable MORE ads to be shown. I now only watch the two public broadcasting channels in Australia (ABC and SBS) and streaming services.
The child Beauty Pageants baffles me the most, this is just so sad in my eyes. I think that attracts the pedophiles.

Yeah it's bizarre. I can't see how anyone who ISN'T a paedo would have any interest in watching little girls dressed up like women, prancing around and judging them on how 'good looking' and cute they are 🤮 there's something seriously weird about that imo. I'm Swedish, have many American things and these things confuse me greatly, especially your (to me) insane gun laws. My sister lives in an apartment complex with a sort of a home owners association, but it's more for taking care of common spaces, maintenance and such. Either way it's ruled by consensus, as we are more fond of dialogue than force. I've never heard of a HOA for actual houses.
In Sweden you need to be either military, police, licensed hunter or licensed target shooter to own a firearm. In the latter case you need to be a member of a shooting club. Additionally you need to be a member for a minimum of six months before you can be licensed for a personal firearm. Then you can request a licence for a .22. After a year you can "upgrade" to larger calibres' after a an approved evaluation of your firearms skills. To get the licence you need to be approved by the Police in your town. And you never, never, take your firearms along anywhere else than their designated uses, either to hunt, or to shoot at the range. You're not even allowed to stop along the way. Straight too, straight fro...
And then there are regulations around storing the gun..

Because…..although people in the USA “think” and “believe” that they are living in the Land of the Free - (only BECAUSE they are TOLD That), sadly most of them are unaware that those of us living in our “unfree” lands wouldn’t put up with those ridiculous lifestyle rules and would protest or vote to change it - they seem to NOT have a choice to change things🤔🤔🫤😑
It's quite funny, as me and my wife have for more years than I can remember " Yearned " to visit Alabama. The is something about the accent and culture we have seen over the years that really appeals to us ( I just start drooling when I see buckets of crawfish I can have )....So I can understand why a man would want to live there with his family as the land looks beautiful. But on the other side of that I deep down feel E.B and his family should come to Britain. Make a new life. Ignore the doom n gloomers as this Island is on a new path and still offers such a wealth of opportunity to those looking for it. We have our problems like many others, but the pace of life and security far outweighs the negativity of those who have forgotten to appreciate what we have all taken for granted. Many American's are immigrating to Britain, the Home Office report a 37% increase in citizenship applications from the USA since 2015. " Come Home EB & bring the kids mate ".....🥰😉
As someone who has lived in Alabama my whole life you should definitely come for a visit. Most everyone is very polite and welcoming and just an fyi not everyone has the accent, at least not in the larger cities and towns but it is somewhat common to hear it still. Also I wouldn’t listen to the negative stereotypes most people give as they have usually never even stepped foot in the state. Come down for a visit I recommend Huntsville and especially Birmingham where I live
@@jasonbrown097 My dear colonial cousin, we had the pleasure of being stuck in Huntsville International for 36hrs nearly 17yrs ago after a emergency diversion on our way to visit family in Canada. Our bags went missing ( not lost ) and I cannot express how much fantastic hospitality was given to us by airport staff and strangers, who turned out to be locals. I didn't lose my cash or credit cards, but it didn't matter as a room was given to us and the offer of a change of clothes could be arranged...Wow ! We never forgot how so many different people went above and beyond to make us Limeys feel so welcome after a traumatic landing in a crap knackered plane that nearly had us giving up flying ever again. I still remember a rude miserable German couple raging at how two lovely young Alabamian airport staff ladies ushered us to the front of the line for our overnight accommodation...Truth is, I gave them $20 each 🤣😂... Your beautiful state is still on our bucket list, and we take no heed or notice of negativity about Alabama from anyone. We live in central London, and according to the doom n gloomers London is controlled by muslim gangs and everyone is being knifed🤣😂... We shall enjoy your historic southern hospitality again before the big fellow in the sky calls our number, of that I am sure.
All my knowledge of Alabama comes from the Lynyrd Skynyrd song and smoky and the bandit 😊but I would like to visit someday as well as Kentucky (Jack Daniel’s distillery). You should come to visit the uk, especially the west of England we have all the good stuff! Stonehenge, Clifton suspension bridge, cheddar gorge, wookey hole, Tintagel castle one of many to claim to be Camelot, but mainly come to Bristol birthplace of Cary Grant and the pirate Blackbeard, in fact you can still drink in 2 pubs he frequented, also the pub where Daniel Defoe met Alexander Selkirk, the inspiration for Robinson Crusoe
@@philash824 I’ve been wanting to go to the UK for a while. I’ve had the opportunity to travel to Italy, Spain, and Monaco but was not able to make it up to the UK on that trip. Lol don’t believe everything you see and hear in media. Most people tend to exaggerate about a place. Even people from other states seem to think we are all rednecks and have no roads or internet or that we are inbred… we are just a regular place with plenty cities and cool things to do. Although I do recommend the upper half of the state as that’s where a lot of the great nature and cities are. Huntsville is actually where they’ve constructed or developed systems for many of the rockets and spacecraft for NASA. They’ve worked on the Saturn V rocket that took the Apollo missions to the moon, the space shuttle program, the Hubble and James Webb telescopes and the International Space Station. Birmingham where I live is the largest city and metro area in the state where blast furnaces created untold amounts of the iron used to build the country and it’s better known as the center of the civil rights movement( everyone judges us for that even though today we celebrate and honor the heroes of that movement with many museums and monuments). We also have tons of breweries, distilleries, and award winning restaurants. We would be happy to have anyone from the UK or just the world as a whole
I've seen reactions to many of these types of videos and most are to be taken with a pinch of salt. This one however, I agree with. I struggle with mostnof the topics mentioned.In my opinion, very few of these topics make common sense but the majority make lots of money for the rich, mostly at the expense of those who can afford it the least. When I was young (60 now), kids in the UK thought the US was cool and we pretended to be Americans, probably because of TV shows, but I wouldn't trade my life in the UK for the US now. The UK isn't perfect but it is relatively safe and people can't see you taking a piss.

I think that is merely a vestige from the origins of the country. But even then it only applied if you where white and not irish.
Back then everyone could claim or buy pretty expansive property so if anyone didn't like you it was easy to avoid each other. It's maximum freedom without other people around.
Here in europe (at least in Hungary) you have to have a background check and a test to prove you're mentally fit to own a weapon and also a shooting and maintaining test. However, even if you get the license, you still cannot carry the gun around, you have to keep it in a safe locker, and the ammo in a separate safe locker. (Also, the types you can own are pretty limited. As a basic citizen, nothing more than pistols and hunting rifles)
p.s.: Not to mention that every single weapon and ammo purchase is registered to your name
p.s.2: However, you can own a gas operated pistol without any license, as long as it's not capable of causing fatal injury (but you still can't just carry it around as far as I know)

With the size. . . It probably has more to do with sugear, free time and the car. With how much US people work away time that they could be used for yourself, the ammount of sugear in the diet and driving everywhere, it is hardly a mystery that weight can become an issue.

As a person living in the UK, I've never understood the whole tip culture in the US. Your employer pays you a ridiculously pathetic amount per hour, I come in and spend money on the food you're offering, and then at the end of it - I then have to tip the staff at least 20%... and yet if I don't tip - I'M the asshole, not the employer who is paying you a pathetic amount?!
In New Zealand to own or even touch a gun you need a firearms licence. Getting a firearms licence can take up to a year.
As a fellow Kiwi who has been involved in competitive target shooting before I moved to the UK, I can’t wrap my head around how easy it seems to be in some places in the USA to obtain firearms.

Yes - price marked is price charged. Although I think that if they spot it even at the cashier's desk they can refuse to sell the product. They can't charge you £1 for something marked 1p, that's illegal, but they can decide not to sell it to you at all. Although I did once find some expensive cheese marked 1p in a Sainsbury's and even though I took six huge packs to the till the cashier just winked at me and rang it up.

I believe you are right too - if the price on the shelf is lower than the price that comes up at the checkout, they either have to honour the lower 'advertised' price - or refuse to sell you the item. Only one of the issues with the computerised systems they have now, compared to the old days - when they used to use a 'gun' to label every can, etc. with a price, as they restocked the shelves..!

I'm pretty sure the sales tax thing is more about consumer psychology than anything. Obviously the listed prices will go up if tax is incorporated, so consumers might buy an item or two less than if they look more expense on the shelf. PLUS, the president will be blamed for the rise in prices even if your food bill doesn't rise, so it would also be bad politics.
It's also advertising, with the sheer number of different tax codes it would be impossible to make even a statewide advertisment that displayed all of the prices, let alone a national one.

Just keep doing it and make it clear to the peanut brains reading the advertisement that it's price BEFORE taxes, so they can't complain when they see a price tag with taxes included.
@@spugelo359 they can advertise the peanut butter at X price, wherever they sell it, if they had to advertise the price plus sales tax they would need to tailor the adverts to each tax area, and as the video states there are over 7000 of those. And I wouldn't be at all surprised that a lot of adverts already carry tiny small print advising that sales tax may apply where applicable.

@@SevCaswell In the UK prices are not mentioned in most national advertisements. Supermarkets will charge a price in one supermarket, but the price in the local branch 1/2 mile away can be different. Also manufacturers can only recommend a sales price. It is illegal for them to stipulate a price that an item can be sold at. As it will breach anti competition laws.
One thing about Florida. From what I understand, it's mucher easier in Florida, compared to the other states, to get access to public records, hence you can get bodycam footage and police reports much quicker.

As an austrian gun owner, the "7 steps" are not true.
In Austria, there are 3 categories of gun types.
Class A: military equipment ("Kriegsmaterial") which is prohibited. This includes full auto guns, cal .50+, ap rounds, grenades, mortars, etc.
Class B is semi-auto. So if you want to own a pistol, revolver, semi-auto rifle, you have to have a gun owners license. To obtain such a license, you have to absolve a gun safety training, psychological evaluation, and a background check so you haven't a ban on owning a gun.
Class C is manual rifles like hunting rifles, single or double barrel shotguns (pump action shotguns are class A) muzzleloader, pump action rifles, and a couple weired guns like single shot ar15 or ak variant. If you don't have a gun owners license, you can buy category C guns when you are not banned from owning a gun and 18 years old (or older) and you have to wait a 72 hour cooldown period.
Also: Unless you are a hunter with an active hunting lease or a holder of a special carry permit you are prohibited from carrying a gun. They relaxed the rules a couple years back but before that, even police officers weren't issued such a permit.
I'm a Brit but lived in Belgium for almost 20 years. In Belgium the government pay you a month's vacation pay into your bank directly. If you don't use the 4weeks they don't pay you the holiday money. Here in the UK the employer must pay you holiday pay for 20days.
In Australia, we do NOT have HOAs for houses. We do have Strata for townhouses and apartment complexes, but that is only for general maintenance and care. Some rando tries to tell an Aussie what they can do on their own land in their own home? That person would VERY QUICKLY be told to ‘go forth and copulate!’

Many companies here actually encourage you to take your vacation, and for a good reason: Any vacation not spent has to be paid as if it was a working day. If they don't let you spend your vacation days for a long time and want to fire you, you'll get a few months of pay.
While visiting the states once we went into a wendys to get lunch as it was the quietest food place around, the old couple with us found the size of the meals too big, while the size of the kids meal was the same size as an adult meal where we are from. When they asked if they could have the kids meal burger & fries, we were told by the karen serving us that as we were all adults in the group we could not have anything from the kids menu, so we all (20+ adults) got up and left, that was on our first day and if we find somewhere we like we use it for the rest of the week or two we are there.
Re tipping.Some years ago a bar tender who was soon to holiday in Thailand (where I live) and asked for some tips(pun).i told her NOT to think of tipping 10/20%.Tipping is not mandatory here and i suggested she leave no more than 10 baht(about a quarter) and ONLY if the service was good,compared to American service levels

The low wages are mind boggling in the UK our NMW National Minimum Wage is £9.50 or $11.22 for 22 year olds and above it's lower for younger folk but not by too much.
Here in the United Kingdom we will tip serving staff depending on the service we receive eg; cheerful, efficient service that makes the dining experience more enjoyable.
The sugar one is surprisingly odd and I certainly didn’t realise it until work trips to the US. No breakfast cereals in a hotel that weren’t pre-loaded with sugar (feels like all cereals are sugar-coated like Frosties in the UK); extremely hard to find bread in the supermarket that wasn’t overly sweet. Very different; must be quite noticeable the other way around to Americans visiting here - although at least you can add sugar if you need stuff to taste sweeter.
One of the best ways to pick the lower sugar content is to look at the more expensive items first. It absolutely does seem like the cheaper the product the more sugar its loaded with. The bread I buy is like 6X the cost of regular sliced bread and yet it only has 5 ingredients compared to the wall of text on wonderbread.
Another one is peanut butter. I get the fancy stuff because only 2 ingredients (peanuts, salt) compared to "regular" brands that have at least4 ingredients (including sugar)

You can buy guns, but not gin. Baffling to me. I had to go to a Liquor Store that was across the street. Couldn't walk there though because there was an eight lane highway in between! So there's another cause for obesity. The country is designed around the motorcar. Also, the bread, yoghurts etc are packed with corn syrup. Honestly it is inedible and ultra processed. US citizens are not served well by their government.

i can understand home owners associations if it was limited to extreme things or dangerous things, like dont burn garbage, dont leave broken down cars or equipment on the lawn so long grass grows through them.

Re' portion sizes, here in the UK we have gone the reverse way. Food production and restaurants seem to be competing in how much smaller they can make things for sale. Some of the goods (especially canned goods) on sale in eg, Supermarkets wouldn't look out of place in a Dolls house.
Generally this is because we complain if they put the price up, so to keep the price the same they make the product smaller.

I'd never want to live anywhere near one of those 'Homeowners Associations'. Closest we have to that in the UK are probably leasehold properties which governments keep promising to abolish (but don't, despite often being describing them as a medieval anachronism with no place in modern society) where property development companies get to decree whatever they wish on the suffering home- (but not land-) owners. Outside of that, as a rule if you own your home - its fine to do as you wish as long as it is within the law (including local bylaws). You may have neighbours moan at you about how your untidy lawn or choice of paint for your window frames are driving down 'the tone of the community' (read: supposed local property value) but that is generally all they can do. Local facilities are maintained by local taxes - not some neighbourhood cabal of busybodies.

The medication is not a "happy pill", it doesn't take the awful feelings away, it simply takes you out of the state of paralysing numbness so that you can start working on getting better.

We have HOA here in EU.A construction company made a few houses on a plot of land and the road that connects all the houses to the main road was not handed over to the city.Basically it's ours and we can do what the hell we want with it maybe in the future we want a gate or who knows, but we have to take care of it. When we bought the house we paid for the land and part of the road which is shared with the rest (common road). In total we are 30-ish owners who signed a contract that we pay for street lighting, mowing ,watering the lawn , cleaning the snow from the street in winter etc .In total, I pay somewhere around €150-170 per year for this.Besides the road, the association also arranges if you need a plumber, electrician, etc and the payment is made through them. If you need something done to your house the association takes care of it. We have a president of the association who is elected every 3 years but we also have rules.Under no circumstances are you allowed to change the color of the house, that's all. The house has to be white with gray stone and a brown roof... it was an obsession that all the houses look the same :) If you ask why there are no other rules, there are, but they are given by the city and the county. You are not allowed to make noise after a certain time, you have to take care of your yard etc., common sense rules that if you break them, you are fined by the city, not the HOA ...

About guns,my father has a type c (the easiest to get) shotgun and rifle for hunting and "defence".To obtain them, it took around 6-8 months for the permit, psychological tests,background checks, training courses etc. In addition, he can have a police inspection at any time to see how he stores it.The permit is issued annually with a psychological test .Because he also has a hunting permit, he can have the weapon with him at any time.It will amuse you, but I often see hunters with guns on their backs entering the hotels here. We live next to a very large hunting reserve where wild boars,deer,pheasants,rabits etc are often hunted. There are a lot of guns and gun shops here, but I have never heard of a man being shot.
I couldn't handle American TV. I stayed there for 2 weeks in the early 90's and tried to watch an episode of Star Trek and it was next to impossible to follow because there were ads on every single time a SCENE ends.
I gave up and settled for watching HBO instead. Still had commercials, but they weren't anywhere near as frequent and didn't matter too much when watching a Jean Claude Van Damme action film.
As for portion sizes, my brother and were peckish during a visit to a florida theme park', so we both ordered some Spare Ribs. what they put in front of us was half a cow ribcage... each.

@@willrichardson1809 Doctors prescribe new drugs that come in that have been tested to work better than an old drug. Or they use a new drug because an old one had too many unwanted side effects, but they don't push new drugs just for the hell of it, they don't get kickbacks for doing that here

@@catkin567 Well in my experience they prescribe a drug far to quickly. For example I had serious discomfort in one of my legs after an anckle injury, my GP prescibed two treatmets in a perion of a few weeks, the Next GP prescribed another one and after several months and older semi retired GP came in and said lets get it X-rayed, the did happend to miss a tinny chip of bone but that was not the issue, after then being refered to a specialist all I needed was physio, it cleared in two weeks. So yes they are too keen in many casees to prescribe drugs. For me this is not the GP's fault I believe it comes from above, Big Pharma still makes money out of the NHS.

Therefore the human body CANNOT process them. This means they all STAY in YOUR BODY for the rest of your LIFE!! This is why there are so many illnesses these days. Especially in the last 30-40 years there has been such a huge increase that folks don't stop to think about the root cause!!!!!

From the little I know, most things a HOA does in the states, here in germany is done by either the city or the county and paid for by taxes mostly. And those are not even close to 300$ a month. They also mandate regulations what you can and can't do on your property, but those seem to be WAY looser than what a HOA generally dictates. For example no one ever cares about how often I mow my lawn or what my fence is made out of.
We have a lot of commercials in europe too. Some channels have 15min commercials per 1h
Oh, and being a 56 year old man, I still buy my clothes at the Kid GAP as American kids are fatter than normal, thus avoiding State tax in FL. My Nana bought me a pair of Levi jeans in Texas, asking for them for a 12 year old. I still haven't grown into them yet.

in UK the companies I worked, in you had to give notice of when you wanted holidays but I never heard of anyone being turned down, even if they did not give the full required length of notice.

About taxes being displayed in price tags, the examples provided were 7-8% and I’d much rather have that undisplayed than the 22% displayed taxes in my country lol
