I have had many comments that I have learned a lot from, first off this list is accurate for his famous pieces but apparently there was something before his trancedental etude that was harder called the douze grandes etudes and he made them easier for people in the transcendental etudes. Also I apologize I ranked no 1 wrong it is not transcendental etude 4 it is Paganini etude 4. Also I apologize if you disagree with my list, but some people may have had easier or harder experiences with the pieces and your experience with them isn’t the only one so please stop disliking it and commenting that kind of stuff

@@nicolasnobis9141 Well if you would be proffesional (or at least advanced) pianist, you would know that half of the pieces included in this video don´t dare to be even in top 50 hardest pieces of all time. Not because how hard it "looks" or "sounds", but how hard is the technique to play. Mazeppa is literally easy patterns, Preludio has easy technique, same Hungarian Rhapsody no.6/no.2 (these two are really easy if you try to learn them, it´s the same thing over and over but harder, only thing is the speed and stamina, and most of prodigies have it so it´s easy for them), then Wilde Jagd, these "double" notes are really easy, not talking about the 3 notes trill. That´s like tremolo on violin, Etude no.7 is 2 octaves in 2 hands plus some chords, many mistakes in the midi makes it look hard. Dynamics isn´t all.
And plus, paganini no.6 1838 version is way more harder than the easier one you included in the vid, maybe harder than the paganini no.4.
And you should´ve gave credit to all vids not just half of them :)
Please don´t take this as hate, it´s just opinion. I know nobody is able to do top 10 (that´s why you shouldn´t have done this vid), because someone can play something better than others. We could talk about how hard is to learn it and how hard is it to perform, then we could do some more accurate list, but it doesn´t matter, just play for the beauty :)
      Have a great day

This list is accurate for his famous pieces. Though technically all of the Transcendental etudes shouldn’t be there. There’s an earlier version of those nicknamed the Douze Grandes etudes which were too hard for everyone so Liszt simplified them into what we now know as the Transcendental versions. But understandably they aren’t very well known so there are few performances or good midis. Same story for La Campanella.

Feux follet is difficult to master and perform because aside from the extreme technical challenge of the rapid double notes and huge jumps, you can't just rely on volume, showy chords, excessive pedal, or rubato to hide your deficiences.
Liszt was well aware of this, it's no accident that he makes the pianist play the difficult sections leggiero, pianissimo, staccato, and allegretto. Can't just be letting "good" pianists pass themselves off as "transcendental."

My piano teacher's daughter can play Wilde Jagd. A month ago, after I finished a piano lesson, she played Wilde Jagd for me. It was awesome and the piece stuck in my head.
We are both quite good at playing the piano. I'm starting to do the Chopin Etudes while she is midway through the Liszt Etudes. She is a few years of progress ahead of me even though she started learning the piano only half a year earlier than I did. Though, my progress is accelerating due to my hand size rapidly increasing from an 8th to nearly a 10th in a year. We also both love the piano, even though I am more a math person than a music person, which she is.
We grew up together, being classmates for 8 years, (we are 13 now) but unfortunately she just went abroad to study a few days ago. In the future, I may only see her a few times every year.

edit: i have messed with feux follets for the first time, and i do have to say it is much easier to read than etude no 4b but my point still stands. the speed and accuracy of the intervals in feux follets, along with the notation marks still makes it the most difficult out of these pieces.

Some of these pieces might be ultimately difficult and destructive of your hands and wrists. The fact that they contain flowing octaves in both hands and scales in triple/quadruple tempo does not qualify them as music. Their purpose may have been mainly to provide Liszt with "love" opportunities after the end of concerts. But as music, they ultimately fail. And if they contribute to destroying your physical equipment, they are even worse.
