Our innovative and weather-resistant EMPWR coat can transform into a sleeping bag or be worn as an over-the-shoulder bag.
Our coats are produced using upcycled fabric from companies such as GM and Patagonia and are intended to last for multiple seasons. By making such a high-quality product, the hope is that when someone is seen walking down the street in one of the coats no one will know they are homeless.
A donation of $125 provides one of our
    coats to someone in need
A donation of $125 covers the cost of labor, materials, and overhead expenses. Your contribution is not just keeping someone warm, it is also keeping our team employed.
Our goal is to help employees secure jobs beyond Empowerment Plan
Not one employee has fallen back into homelessness since we began
Although our largest impact to date has been through the global distribution of our sleeping bag coat, the lasting impact lies within our employees and our ability to help those we serve permanently exit homelessness. Empowerment Plan is tearing down barriers to employment faced by low-income parents and providing meaningful programs intended to close the skills gap.
We pair full-time employment with a wide range of supportive services and have already helped dozens of individuals achieve financial stability and independence for their whole family. Our approach addresses everything from housing and childcare to transportation, education and more. We have created an ecosystem of support through our community of partners to address the ever changing needs of our team.
Roughly 60% of the paid 40-hour work week is dedicated to coat production and the remaining 40% is time allocated to programming and supportive services.
In the world we see, women, children and families living in poverty are no longer victims. Instead, they are the architects of their own future. They are educated. They are employed. And they are empowered.
More than 550,000 people experience homelessness on a given night in the United States and roughly 10,000 live in Michigan.
Homelessness is a cycle in which becoming trapped is all too easy. One young college student knew firsthand what an unstable childhood stuck in poverty could mean. With that in mind, Veronika Scott set out to create an opportunity she wished her own family had been given. Initially, this opportunity took the form of a coat-a coat that could turn into a sleeping bag. Pursuing this vision, Veronika spent a semester designing this coat not only for individuals in need, but also with them.
It wasn't until a homeless woman approached Veronika that she realized the true potential of her project. This woman did not want a coat; she wanted a job. It was at that moment Veronika committed to hiring parents from shelters across Detroit to manufacture the coats in an effort to help families break that vicious cycle of poverty and become financially secure.
“This is the first job that has given
me a sense of self-worth and value.
I feel like I am part of something
bigger and feel a sense of support
and community when I come to work.”
    -Sherika Lane, Seamstress
In the years since founding in 2012, Empowerment Plan has evolved from an idea in a college class into an internationally recognized workforce development organization. By pairing full time employment with a wide range of supportive services, we have helped dozens of individuals achieve financial stability and independence for the whole family. Our holistic approach addresses everything from housing and childcare to transportation, education and more.
The Empowerment Plan creates significant economic impact by serving as a stepping stone out of poverty into a state of stability. The core of our work stems from our intensive 2-year employment model focused on providing job readiness training and support services to our workforce.
It is because of this model and the strength of those we employ, that every single person has moved out of the shelter within the first 4-6 weeks of working with us and no one has returned to homelessness once we’ve hired them. Great local made product to help homeless. A poncho and liner seems simpler, provides jacket, rain coat, tarp and sleeping bag. Cheers

I'm glad you like the product, I've bought two after seeing Veronika Scott
at a US Jaycees event in 2018 where she was recognized as a Ten Outstanding Young American.

Zipper would add considerable weight. Zipper could break, become misaligned making coat ineffective seal wise. The extra insulation at the back will keep your tush warm. Ms Scott said the coat is effective to 0 degree and they are working to make it -60 degrees.

Wondering as a sewing skills ministry or open source project... making from thrift store comforters, sleeping bags and then like an outer bivy. Then do it all in a compression sack maybe?

They need to make this out of gortex for the north west, and camouflage.

Wonder how well the Tyvek and related more cost effective materials would work? Maybe even a pocked bivy sack?

It would be great if you could put it on your back like a backpack to leave you hands free.

I saw Veronica wearing it across her back by rolling it up, then draping it over one shoulder & clipping the sleeves together.
