  • This is the Bell Street , Railway Crossing in Coburg , Metropolitan Melbourne , Victoria. The crossing here is on the Upfield line which sees Comeng and Siemens Nexas metro trains. The crossing is located in between Coburg ( up side ) and Batman ( down side ) stations and is right next to the busy Coburg station. The crossing here is extremely busy and is getting removed by LXRA. Filmed along side SBMetro . Footage and photos taken by me in June , 2020 . Crossing code : C0102 . Distance from SCS 10.289 KM
The crossing here sees a lot of traffic and was rated the 6th most dangerous crossing in Victoria. The 5 crossings above it have since been removed so this crossing is currently the most dangerous in the state. There are 4 signals on the crossing . 2 gated ones and 2 cantilevers. The gated signals are on the north western and south eastern sides of the crossing and there are cantilevers in front of both of them. There are pedestrian crossings on both the north and south sides of the crossing.
    This crossing has :
2 general signals ebells. Both bells are GS Type-3s. Both bells are programmed to sound until the gates rise
Westinghouse crossarms painted silver on all the crossing. The crossarm on the eastern gated signal is missing the cap on the end of the light extension piece.
Westinghouse lights on all the crossing. The lights on the gated signals and lower sections of the cantilevers are marked incandescent Westinghouse in silver housings. The lights on the top of the eastern cantilever and one of the lights on top of the western cantilever are marked LEDs in silver housings . The other light on top of the western cantilever is an unmarked LED in a black housing.
Older style Western Cullen Hayes gate mechanisms with cast iron counterweights and older style counterweight arms.
Red and white wishbone gates with artcraft incandesent gate lights.
5 inch split cast iron clamp style Mck&h bases on the gated signals and unmarked bases on the cantilevers.
Magnetic automation pedestrian swing gates for the pedestrian crossing.
    Old and new signage
Newer style mesh fencing around the gated signals and pedestrian crossings
White painted 5 inch poles for the gated signals. There are holes in the poles for when they had lights on them. The cantilevers are larger newer style ones and are painted grey. There is a hole for a set of lights on the upper section on the eastern side.
The crossing here originally had hand gates which were replaced by the current gated signals on the 29th of November, 1962 . The signals were originally worked automatically for up trains and manually for down trains. There were modifications to the circuits for the gates at bell street on 21/01/1972 and the gates are now automatically operated . Around 1998 the cantilevers were added to the crossing and the lights and signage was removed from the gated signals.
The crossing here is very busy and dangerous and is getting removed by LXRA by means of skyrail. Coburg station will also be turned into a skyrail station.
Here is footage of the crossing from the early 90s when the crossing had WRRS or Mck&h gate mechanisms as well as having a teardrop and hybrid bell combo. The teardrop sounded out when the gates lowered. Crossing at 6:45 • Upfield Line Melbourne...
Here is some more footage of the crossing in a cab view from the 90s . Crossing seen at 1:24 • Handgate Heaven
