The stars had to be aligned perfectly to carry off a "jump ship". The short stories of the black guests on Ancestry should be put together for a great lifetime documentary for next black history month, would be a breathtaking learning experience.
Excellent! but that wasn't long enough. I want to know more especially, his DNA findings, how he got to Britain was his progenity taken there as slaves? Ive been told not to expect South Africa in my DNA, but I have it, the reason someone told me not to expect it is because South African blacks didn't participate as slave raiders or traders, but I have South African DNA from South African Bantu tribes who migrated to Central Africa the Ovambo and Mbukushu people. I really would love to know more.
Look at the area Victori: '1925' Britain had abolished slavery 100 years before this date! And the host did say South Africa was a former British colony.
As a South African it dawned on me that if his grandfather returned to the ship and went home, his children and their children would have been born in Apartheid South Africa - as I was. One decision changed his entire line's history. I would love to see him document his journey home. ❤️

I'm watching this here in South Africa, realizing how many people of colour lost track of their ancestors because of the fact that no records were kept. It's 😔
I loved this episode! Leslie has such an interesting and surprising background. The complexity of American history is really highlighted in his family's story. Great season!

I love the show “Finding Your Roots”. And this episode touched my heart. My heart went out to both guests. Discovering the truth about their ancestors now gave them the answers they need to discover new strengths and deeper meaning about themselves. Ancestry is one of the keys to unlocking your soul. ❤️
Fascinating. I come from a long line of American Nixons that include branches in Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia and, it appears, the Bahamas. This piqued my curiosity. I wish him well in his search for his true origins.
He’s such a handsome man. Yes, many Africans were living as free men in America. I saw a New York census record looking for an ancestor and spotted a number of Africans on it. They were among the w for whites and b for blacks. Love this program ❤
This was an amazing episode; and, to have 2 guests in one season discover Barbadian ancestry was so COOL. I felt such an affinity with Leslie, Jr. emotions, regarding his Barbadian ancestry. Being Barbadian born; and, though knowing that I was was descended from enslaved people, it was still quite emotional, when first viewing the documents which showed my maternal grandfather's grand-dad, as a 2-year-old and 4-year-old "property" of someone.
Ancestry you tryna find my roots next I just found out my grandfather isn’t my grandfather 😂😂😂 and my grandmother cheated on him with her pastor who I actually knew growing up!
🤔 Love Mr. Odom's work. I've been studying my family history so I looked up his father and yes it said South Africa but his class is W. So his great grandfather is white? Possible but it not being highlighted 🤔. Also, I found other Nicksons that are black. I pray he recieved the correct information. Never done this before, Mr. Gates is why I've been studying my own family history but this story doesn't seem correct or complete. 😪 There's so many incorrect spellings of names, birth dates for african Americans that you truly have to match up names of family members and ages in comparison to census. Soo much time.
I just found out that Blacks who came from Europe where classified as white. Only Black people from Africa were considered black. Perhaps because South Africa was British owned at that time he was considered white. You might want to look up the video “Prominent Americans you assumed where white” on the channel called *Straight UP*. It was long but it was very very interesting.
3:04 I Benjamin Nixon and Richard Nixon 37th US President are related so Leslie Odom Jr who played Al Gore (3rd US Vice President just like Richard Nixon later serve as US Vice President under Dwight Eisenhower) in Hamilton the Musical is related to Richard Nixon because Leslie’s great grandfather Benjamin has Nixon surname

I was confused by their comments at the beginning. In talking about the gun, they acted like it should be hidden. Why? I am not suggesting that the child should handle it but knowing it is there seems normal to me. There were three guns in my childhood home. They were behind the door or in a drawer. I respected my parents word when they said to leave them alone.

South Africa was an colonial power of the British, German and the Netherlands. Those who we're & are African & also British miss the British presence in Africa but there's also the issue of the horrific tragedy of Africa selling it's own subjects off as slaves in exchange for weapons.
WE ALL HAVE AN AFRICAN FAMILY LEGACY....not just #GreenPrivilege people like Leslie Odom Jr. Humankind begun in Africa so essentially we all have an African heritage......... #NowYouKnow :)
If you as a white person find that you have 3 -6 % Senegalese ancestry it's not because all humanity began in Africa it is simply because at least one of your great-great-grandparents was African. Do a historical timing on that it is likely that the combination occurred during slavery if you were born in the Americas. If that was the case many Chinese and Middle Eastern people would have African ancestry too but they do not
This isn’t very good genealogy. You shouldn’t relay on one dubious record. That person they found could have easily been someone else. Henry Louis Gates has a tendency to do things like this.
@Mister Magoo, one way to solve this is for him to take a dna test. If he is related to South Africans in the last handful of generations then i believe it is true.
@@opensprings maybe it depends really. The problem with DNA test is that it can very easily mix up different ethnicities especially closely related ethnic groups so even if he is South African he may not pop up as South African or depending on the database and how the geneticist interpret his results. The geneticist could very misinterpret his South African markers as Angolan because he is African American because he has West African ancestry from his African American ancestry. It’s also why DNA test shouldn’t be taken too seriously.
@@brooklynbutter5357 I know, but he still should’ve presented it as a dubious possibility and not so confidently like he did. I’ve met other academics who do this and it drives me crazy. Some academics will go on with one possibility with a strong convection and it may not pan out. That happens a lot, that’s why you need to be careful about phrasing your information as maybe, not definitely without a strong conviction.

Yea. I felt his story wasn't complete and possibly not correct. Search his great grandfather's name and read the entire line.
Not everyone came as slaves..
@@yanaabrahams5604 where did I say that?
We forget since history class colonizers were doing their own raiding too and it’s more than 1 way a ancestor could of got here other than slavery.
