That's why I prefer rest areas in snowstorms, particularly in the Northeast. They constantly plow them during the storm and are much better plowed than truck stops. No comparison.
I remember I-94, Miles City, MT. most boring 96 hours stuck at a grocery store because ALL the truck stops were full. When I woke up after the first night, snow was up almost over the hood, had to shovel snow away from the front to allow enough air to cool the engine, and to allow air into the cab. I ran flatbed then and had about 1.5 feet in flat aluminum on the deck. when i finally pulled out of there, i was over-height. Just a few words of advice, never set your trailer brakes, you will be under the trailer the trailer getting cold with a hammer or torch to thaw them out.
"RICHARD WHY ARE YOU SITTING STILL IN THE TRUCKSTOP??? DONT YOU KNOW YOURE ON A JIT (SHIT) LOAD AND ITS AN AIR FREIGHT LOAD THAT HAS TO BE IN KEASBY NEW JERSEY IN 15 MINUTES!! WHY ARE YOU STILL IN NEBRASKA AND STILL SITTING?? PLEASE UPDATE YOUR ETA TO THE RECEIVER!! RICHARD YOU ARE IN BIG TROUBLE MISTER AND IF YOURE NOT AT THAT CONSIGNEE WITHIN MINUTES YOU STAND TO LOSE YOUR JOB AND I WILL ROUTE YOU TO NEAREST TERMINAL TO CLEAN OUT YOUR TRUCK!! PLEASE ADVISE!!!!
Sometime in the mid 1990s I was being chased by a major snowstorm in Wyoming. I made it to the pilot in Laramie WY sometime after midnight before the snow caught me. And yes I found a parking spot that late. Woke up soon after sunrise to snow over the steps of my W900 KW. I think it was a 1997 . But the year May have been 1996. Crazy times. Stayed there until the next morning and put it in the wind.
Ahhh the memories... the three Cs and a B we called it. Cummins, Chicken, and College football on the little TV. The B? Sometimes stood for a blunt, sometimes stood for some Bourbon. Depended on the day, but the best part was showin up to the receivers and they could care less how late you were cuz they got 4x more snow then you but that’s their norm. The north can be grateful!
Ha ha I spent 2 years in North Dakota and never saw it that bad. Hope your tanks are full, don't shut it off and settle in with a good book for 2 or 3 days. You learn patience when you live in a truck.
This is where the emergency snow shovel, rubber over the shoe boots, and chains comes in handy! I've dug out enough big vehicles (though not as big as a rig) in NY snow belt winters to know just what to keep in the boot of my vehicle. Shovel, extendable handle snow broom, and chains.
I have all those in my rig...I even preemptively bought insulated maintenance coveralls just in case as well. Ready to dig myself a path. Broom the left overs away and use my truck chains to drive. Learned that driving in Montana
I live in upstate new York. I can remember driving my car to work late at night, worked 3rd shift for 6 years, hearing the ice hitting the roof of my car.
Been there done that, but sometimes worst than other times...Gary Indiana, sawyer Michigan, fucking Boston etc hated it but looking back damn good memories
This is a bit weak. Those 40 and south drivers just have no clue :) Wait till you get a load going to Seattle in December and you have to go through 4th of July pass :) Got to love those logging trucks. You are doing 20, with hazards in 2ft packed snow, the "guard rail" is a 10ft snow wall, and the logging truck blows by doing 75, tootin his horn :) Let's not forget the Pilot in Cheyenne. During a normal snow the drifts will cover entire trucks :) Nothing as perplexing as going to sleep with cold weather and waking up to 40' of snow and 200' snow drifts :)
AND DONT FORGET ABOUT THOSE HIGH WINDS OF 60-70-80 MPH AND UP AND ROCKING THAT CONDO SLEEPER BACK AND FORTH AND TRYING TO FLIP YOU OVER ON YOUR SIDE AND KILLING YOU DEAD INSTANTLY AS SOON AS THE SIDE OF YOUR CAB SMACKS THAT PAVEMENT VIOLENTLY!!!!
40 feet of snow overnight huh? 10 inches of snow equals about 1 inch of rain. So you are saying it was like raining 40 plus inches in one night. I am calling bullshit on that one.
And they STILL make you stop at the scales just before Cheyenne on the 25 north to walk inde to show them your paperwork 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Th pilot/ flying J is only 40 miles from Fort Collins....while waiting to pick up at budweiser there i had to run up there to get fuel.....in a blizzard...
am from Pennsylvania and the Mountains across Pennsylvania are no joke in the rain, snow, flog and ice. I always take my good time mostly in Central Pennsylvania like State College, Johnstown and Erie areas. I drove thru other States with Mountains are same rule take your time and stay off the brakes. Driving around Northern Michigan is fun in the winter when the snow falling and your on the road alone... I love the Mountains
Rain, Snow, Flog And Ice??? Dude You Left Out The Worst One: WIND!!!! WIND CAN TURN YOUR TRUCK OVER AND FLIP YOU ON YOUR SIDE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY AND KILL YOU DEAD INSTANTLY IN YOUR CAB THE VERY SECOND YOUR CONDO SLEEPER CAB SMACKS THAT PAVEMENT WITH FEROCIOUS VIOLENT FORCE!! PEOPLE, DONT EVER UNDERESTIMATE THE KILLING POWER AND FORCE OF WIND!!! You Do And You Will Be SORRY!!
+Richard Kaltenbach it's scary just too see it bro..I saw a truck flip because of the wind I was like shit dude! me and my partner pulled over and ran up to the guy he was banged up but ok
I used to work like this people back in 1991 To 2001, then down in spoken Washington in a McDonald's a cople sat by me trying to get my attention, wish they did. I started AMWAY with them, 2003 i was making twice money than truck driving, 2004 parked my tractor in my new 5 acres home as a trophy.
+samedeepwater3 - in the 1998 blizzard in western Minnesota there was a 14' snowdrift covering highway 7 just East of Montevideo, and the highways were shut down for two days. The snowplows currently use GPS to clear the highways. Waiting 10 hours to get back on the road would've been nice

I never set them at 20 degrees or under. Keep some of that de-icing fluid in your tool box to run through your air lines. Stuff works
I bet there were southern dispatchers losing their minds demanding you get on the road because "it wasn't that bad where they were."
Fax them this video , a pic of you with a snow shovel and memo....Gotta dig my way to ya now...

Tim England yea no shit.
Can you lose your job for something that is out of your control? (im not a trucker just wondering)
You know it's cold when the snow crunches when you walk on it

Well at least they are parked and not on the road like the guys in April 2015 on i80.
Liliana Kaspar Good point liliana. You’re talking about the pileup in Wyoming?

Oh, and either a 25 lb bag of salt or cat litter! Works wonders on ice.

I have been through there at night when there was a snow storm. Whew!!!
Time to start banging on doors to see if everyone is OK and nobody froze to death.
That is crazy! Wow!
I've been shut down because of storms but I've been fortunate so far that my truck hasn't been berried like that.
