I had a Mitsubishi heat pump installed last year, removed the gas furnace, similar house in Aurora CO. My unit is way better at cold temperatures than that Carrier model; it'll put out the same BTUs from 0F to 60F, and at 0F it has a 2.5 COP. I prefer that type of cold performance. In my case, I didn't need heat strips or any backup, and it got to -20F a few times. I would check the house heat loss carefully because the gas furnace may have been oversized.
