Solid list. Some of my underrateds, in that almost nobody talks about them anymore:
The eponymous debuts of MOBY GRAPE and IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY. Some of the best music that came out of the San Francisco scene in the psychedelic sixties.
Loggins and Messina's MOTHER LODE was probably their best album and it's seldom mentioned.
Badfinger's WISH YOU WERE HERE is absolutely brilliant.
The first album by FEVER TREE is positively amazing, and their other offerings have some terrific psychedelic rock that is always melodic. A unique lead singer, too. I know a member of the short-lived Texas band -- great guy.
Millennium's BEGIN is, like the astounding ODESSEY AND ORACLE, is a singular "thematic" album with some of the best production/arrangements by Curt Boettcher, about the only person who could touch Brian Wilson at the time.
The Beach Boys' SUNFLOWER is, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest albums of the 1970s. Not just the songs and performance, but the engineering on the album is sensational. This was the group at their very best.
Jackson Browne's I'M ALIVE is as good as any of his many more acclaimed albums. Tragedy in his life always brought the best out of him musically.
Glen Campbell's REUNION, with all but one song written by the incomparable Jimmy Webb, is a singular singer-songwriter album, only in the this case the singer and songwriter are two different people.
RENDEZVOUS by Christoper Cross. He's so much more than his first Grammy-winning album, but he had fallen so far from grace this album was only released in Germany in the beginning. It's a stunner. He's still making terrific music today, despite a terrible bout with COVID-19.
STARTING OVER by The Raspberries. Two new members, same old brilliant power pop.
Donovan's 7-TEASE. Impeccably produced, melodic songs covering all kinds of styles, from Mardis Gras to rock to humorous to balladry.
MISFITS by The Kinks. Made just before they became arena rock stars, this is one of the best-sounding Kinks albums and Ray and Dave Davies' songwriting is as good as ever.
That's it for now, but I'm sure I can think of another 50 or more...
Yeah Smallcreeps Day. 👍
Fantastic Album. Simon Phillips on Drums, Noel McCalla Vocals. I love that Album.
I have a few to add to the underrated list: Tony Banks “A Curious Feeling “, Mike Rutherford’s “Smallcreeps Day”, The Tubes “Love Bomb”, Crowded House “Together Alone”.
The first two Journey albums (with Greg Rolie) pre-Steve Perry are fantastic! Every song is good and Neal Schon's guitar work is outstanding.
I agree about Mark Hollis and Communique. I also have every Knopfler solo album and he’s only gotten better with age. However, the multi album transformation of Talk Talk’s sound is still the most gratifying journeys in music that I have taken. What a talent.
When I saw the thumbnail and I saw Farm in Archer and Brent Bourgeois, I almost fell over. Sleeping Satellite and Dare To Fall In Love are two incredible, heart-wrenching songs that I absolutely love. Add to your list of criminally underrated album's Jude Cole's second album A View From Third Street, and the self-titled album by Arc Angels.
Tasmin Archer, damn spellcheck
This was fantastic! Here's hoping for more of the "underrated shows"!!
David Essex - Rock On, great songs and fantastic production, no filler
Those later Talk Talk albums - really really good stuff. I also only discovered those albums years later.
If any Jethro Tull album is underrated it’s definitely “Benefit”. i love the album! I like the US version with “Teacher”. I love the first 2 songs are gold “With You There To Help Me” and to me the stand out i track that i personally relate to “Nothing To Say”.
“Son” and “To Cry You a Song” are AWSOME! i got the CD with the UK track listing but “Teacher” is included as a bonus track.
Missed your show tonight. I was wondering if you've ever interviewed Tommy Shaw? Love his slbum The Great Divide and Shaw Blades Hallucination
Art Garfunkel Watermark & Scissors Cut Albums are both underrated
Excellent topic. So many to talk about . I submit Joe Walsh’s first Barnstorm solo album after he left the James Gang. Jay from Cleveland
New subscriber here. Can listen to these videos all day. Agree on alot of these. I'm assuming most of your listeners know Roy Harper sang lead on Pink Floyd song Have a Cigar. As far as my list goes Queen..Queen ll. Black Sabbath vol.4. Jethro Tull Benefit. Led Zeppelin Presence. New York Dolls Too Much Too Soon. Blue Oyster Cult 1st album. BeeGees 1st album. Yes Relayer. Cheap Trick 1st album. I could go on lol. Get better my friend.
Argent - In Deep
What are the most underrated albums of all time? Easy: anything the late Rusty Day was involved in, particularly the first three Cactus albums (Cactus 1970, One Way or Another 1971, and Restrictions 1971).
I agree completely about what you said about Myles Goodwyn. I recently bought a blues album by him on which the guitar work is a stand out. The Whole Worlds Going Crazy is my favourite by April Wine. Great to Hear Madman Across the Water is in your top three. It hits my top five. No other album by Elton or anyone else sounds like that one.
Rupert Hines Waving Not Drowning most underrated.
Stephen Bishop’s Bowling In Paris Album that was produced by Phil Collins and has Collins on drums and sometimes backing vocals, it’s a beautiful sounding Album very 80’s sounding but great stuff
I'd like to add, Good Bye Cruel World, Mighty Like A Rose by Elvis Costello
Badlands - VooDoo Highway
Pride and Glory
Michael Schenker Group (all albums from the eighties)
TOTO’s Turn Back Album but then again so is Hydra ( although that had 99 as a Single ) I guess you could also include Isolation which I think is their best AOR Album with The Seventh One right behind it although they mix it up with a little Pop.
Every picture , yeh, one of the best albums ever made.
Mink deville- return to magenta is very underrated n so is willy DeVille
Billy Idol - Charmed Life
I am curious is there any album's you are looking for?? I realize in today's age that anything can pretty much be found and purchased but is there an album that you just haven't got that you would love to have?? Llmk thank you. New subscriber here so I don't know alot about you and your channel yet.
Omega. The most amazing R'n R band ever: Oméga
RUSH - Caress of Steel.
Between The Buttons is the most criminally underrated Rolling Stones album.
Check out the Tim Pierce RUclips video "The GREATEST Band I EVER Joined | The STORY of TOY MATINEE" Tim and the surviving members of Toy Matinee remember Kevin Gilbert and the making of the album.
