How long does it take you to finish a screenplay or novel?

My [current] novel began as a novelette--finished in September 2021 (that took a few months, approx 11,000 words).
Conversion into novel form (1st draft) when people kept asking for it: 14 months, 91,888 words.
Today: on 2nd draft--rewrite after adding a new main character: 91,445--after cutting about 30,000 words and building it back up.
Final answer: It's complicated. 😂
"You almost don't even care that it doesn't make sense" helps me understand the popularity of fanfiction in a way I never did before.
My first novel (unpublished fantasy/sci-fi) took a year to write 29 chapters as a first draft and I'm in the final stages of editing it. The rough draft of my sequel, I started at the end of February and to this date and today, I'm working on chapter 17 with 49,000 words. In terms of the rules, I throw them in the trash. A predictable copy & paste structure doesn't make for a compelling story. It doesn't push the envelope to newer and more creative ideas.
It happened to Mark Twain with Huckleberry Finn too!
That's the same method I use for MY project! Just random notes and doodles! It's a lot of organized chaos! Lol
Novel Courage
This way of thinking is becoming the norm (Thank God) The elite old guard mentality is starting to crumble and decline. The fact that I "stumbled" across this video was no coincidence. Thank You.
GRRM and Stephen King are famous for their fly-by-the-seat-of-their-pants writing styles. Anne Rice as well. How "old guard" were you thinking?
Deffo helps me to leave some holes on the way there to check on the way back. The first time I found a golden nugget was enlightening.
Thats exactly what I do. Except I prefer a physical notebook and a ballpoint pen for brainstorming. But disappointment in a concept not doing what I thought it would was the jumping off point for my first big story. It morphed into a completely different thing at the end but i feel like the exploration helps you find your own voice in the concept and the longer it develops the more it becomes more unique to you.
Yes I've always been a fan of doing all of my writing long hand.

Lux hit on something that I've seen on X's "writing community": the "crabs in a bucket" mentality (keep others down so you may rise). Thinking that millions of readers should *only* like your stories and no one else's reveals the height of their hubris--and the depth of their inner terror.

here is how I begin a novel (every time): 'It was a dark and rainy night.......'
and continuing: rent was due, food prices and gas was up. Government desperately trying to finance failing foreign war adventures..... the little man had to pay..... somehow...... (i swear, this is how i start each and every novel i write)
story told in Metal Gear Solid Snake voice. would be epic (if you know you know)
I try to give clues about the time of day, the weather, etc, instead of explicitly saying it. If I write "young Molly returns home, drops her soaking raincoat on the floor and peels off her wet shoes with the laces still tied", I don't have to mention the weather. It leaves a bit of room open for questions and inspires wonder.
😂 Well that does save you the time of stressing over how to start and just get on to your story

I routinely see the same flavor of criticisms for stuff like John Wick or transformers and superhero movies which tend to be aimed at young men. These things have big audiences but clearly don’t put sense-making at their forefront, so they are bound to catch flack from some detractors. Loud dissidence comes with the territory of popular acceptance for any new trends.
Criticisms are just opinions, and you know what everyone says about opinions.
I’ve written 112k words in 6 weeks with no problem and I’ve also struggled to get 50k in 4 weeks. It totally depends on the project, the mindset you enter the project with, your experience level, and sometimes even the time of year! There’s no right answer, you just gotta do what works for you.

I learned a lot. A more accurate title would say something about fanfiction or writing what you want.
Hopefully every writer is writing what they want. There's nothing filled with more dread than writing a story you don't want to write. [By the way, I don't think her writing is fanfic. I think she was giving examples of another author's success with it. Her answers were a bit of a windy road, though...]
Excellent technique
Lux Raven has a powerful message. She waded through the school of tongue twisters, climbed through and over their lofty structures to quietly spell out some interesting personal discoveries. Storytelling in its simplest form is just a way for us to share experiences and elaborate on our feelings. It is also useful to hear the note accumulation technique as now i can allow myself to see my efforts with a renewed confidence and patience. It would have been interesting to hear more about collaborations, their timing and how that effects the creative process.
The Harry bit probably could have been longer but it wasn't thank God.
The vast majority of people would be happy to do nothing, so paying attention to what the majority want isnt a great barometer of if something is good or not. Mcdonalds is popular, it doesnt mean its good for you or the world at large.

I can understand how a fan fiction debut novel about a pop star could do very well, but I can also see why your literature professors wanted to barf. It's great to do your thing, make some money maybe and enjoy that spotlight while you have it. It's BETTER if you can create something that can go beyond today and last decades. There are millions of people out there that don't want meaningful, well organized and executed literary content - they just want to have some fun in the moment. Someone still has to decide to publish it though, and getting work published that clearly is not written well can be a challenge.
