- In 2017, the Berklee Indian Ensemble presented a landmark collaborative concert with its fifth Artist in Residence, Indian playback singer Shreya Ghoshal. The Ensemble is delighted to share an excerpt from that evening: a reimagining of the 1962 classic, “Aap Ki Nazron Ne Samjha”. Presented here with just four musicians - Ms. Ghoshal, lauto player Vasilis Kostas (Greece), violinist Layth Sidiq (Iraq/Jordan), and tabla player Giri Subramaniam (India) - this simple but soulful interpretation was performed in tribute to one of India’s most iconic voices: Lata Mangeshkar.
About the Berklee Indian Ensemble: Founded in 2011 by faculty member Annette Philip, the Berklee Indian Ensemble is one of the largest and most diverse ensembles at Berklee. Apart from performing original compositions and arrangements, the Berklee Indian Ensemble tours internationally; presents a wide array of South Asian folk, classical, and contemporary music; and has collaborated with various world-renowned artists, garnering over 180 million views for their viral videos to date.

The fact that she's sitting so calmly doing all those swiftest harkats effortlessly shows how mature, rehearsed and polished singer she is. It's a blessing to hear everytime she sings.
I'm an old Jazz fan that has been Shreya's #1 American fanboy for the past ten years. At 36, she is already the best pop singer who has ever lived. Duke Ellington once described Ella Fitzgerald as "beyond category." Shreya is a genius that is difficult to quantify, especially given we Americans don't understand any of the ten languages she commonly sings in. She is a musical Rosetta stone, can sing any genre, any tempo, shred complex beats, sing with great feeling, her lower register is deepening as she matures, she is now in her prime. Beyond category? Duke had no idea what he was saying. Thank you to Berklee for creating a community that appreciates Indian popular music and gives it the attention it deserves. When will American music fans wake up?
I have forgotten the number of times I've listened & been smitten by this rendition. Oof! We really are living in her era. Ears are blessed ❣
Musicians ,Dancers and Singers don't need anybody to share there happiness or sadness ..they can express it through there God Gifted talent ....Loved it .....sooooo beautiful 😍
violin player is a master, pranam from an Indian classical singer. he is very blessed. and no words can explain Shreya Ghoshal, I'm a Bengali, he is our pride.
Denver, Colorado can’t wait to witness your live performance here. You are a blessing Shreya Ghoshal. ❤
This song is in Raag Darbari/ Adana maybe? The feel of the raag is sweet and heavy. No wonder it makes people have that teary-eyed-soul-touching feel to it.
She is the ultimate queen, one and only *Shreya Ghoshal*
The best cover ever done by any artist ... Shreya is a living legend
Awesome gift from God......a voice to remember forever after Lataji and Ashaji. Congratulations Shreya. Y have brought a new dimension in Indian Music Industry. 🙏🏼👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤🎵🎶🎵📯🎼📯🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎵🎶🎵

Her voice reminds me of Lataji..💕
And people think American singers and pop stars are the best😭😭😂😂😂
It's so sad to see that they replaced her with Neha Kakkar in Indian Idol
Shame
Shreya is always one of the Kohinoor of India... No matter which country she goes,She keeps India's Pride... Love You Shreya Ji..
Jonny Bairstow plays such a good violin apart from being a world class cricketer!!
I can see these points in Shreya's voice:
1: discipline
2: sweetness
3: patience
4: the classical Bengali touch❤️
❤️❤️❤️❤️
She is gem of India
So proud of you.
I am leaving this comment here so after a year whenever someone like it I get reminded of this touching song ❤️
Listening to this rendition, I had tears in my eyes. Remembering my grandmother who on her dying bed didnt remember our names but used to sing this song flawlessly with all the lyrics. We miss her a lot. May she rest in peace.
tabla guy control the tempo make this all a masterpiece,,,, he deserve a spotlight too
She stays 2 building aways when ever she does riyaz at her penthouse, my frnd calls me who stays next to her building.. I'm blessed to her her voice 3rice a month.. nothing but smile on my face n my soul.. So Beautiful, simple, humble, down to earth kind in nature and a traditional wear lover..
i'm brazilian and i dont know indian music was so beautiful i'm addicted now
The guy with the tabala deserves a big round of applause too, did a great job back there👍
Usually singers take away all the praise in a performance. But here the instrumentalists are taking it to the next level.
Bairstow and Starc having a quick net session between Shreya's performance 😉
Hey, Berklee College of Music, could the music that you compose and present be converted to audio files and made accessible through Spotify? We love your music and would love it if it was accessible on the go.
I didn't know Prince Harry could play the violin.
Even Shreya's breath sounds like music. Not Kidding.
shreya is already a legend who will be remembered for ever like Lata Mangeshkar or Asha Bhonsle.
I Iove İndia, Respect Shreya Ghoshal. From Azerbaijan.! 👍💛💖👍
please remind me to listen this master piece again and again
🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲
She is the Queen👑
Greetings from Saudi Arabia
This is how recreation of a classics should be done...Must watch for T- series who is destroying the level of music to earn money.. please T- series don't degrade the level of Indian music please understand that u r representing ur nation ..lots of money can be earned by creating good quality music..a request by all the music lovers..
Goddess Saraswati resides in Shreya's voice.
If she was born in us then this woman would win Grammy awards till she retires 🙏
If you have to re-create a classic song, this is how it should be. Remix or remakes are killing the soul of the music.
CAN WE JUST TAKE A MOMENT TO APPRECIATE THE INCREDIBLE JUGALBANDI OF THE INSTRUMENTALISTS, They didn't just play their instruments they were going with the flow and enjoying every bit of it. As a guitarist myself i have tremendous respect for them and of-course Shreya Ghoshal is as usual incredible with her performance. :)
One spotlight is missing in this performance ""THE TABlA GUY!""
I am fascinated by how they dominate the voice, this girl makes it look so easy, and what to say about the musicians ufff ... Greetings from Mexico ...
The moment Shreya uttered “aap” I hit like..I knew the rest is gonna be a mesmerising experience
Here is it! When One side Bollywood is remaking nd ruining the classics, nd the other side musicians like these ppl r making it in an another level! Kudos to the entire team... Always pleasure to watch nd listen Shreya !
Musicians and singers are the luckiest people on this planet
Dear Team Berkley, the Musicians and Very Honourable Shreya Ghoshal, as an Artist, I can only say that I offer my utmosf gratitude and Humble Bow to you all. I cried and it made me cry to see the Blessing of your Outstanding Creativity and Talent. Stay Blessed all of you. Mam We Respect you for your Enchanting and Mesmerising Voice. Regards from An Artist in Peshawar Pakistan. Love and Blessings.
The violinist did so much justice to this timeless classic, in his unique way. Thank you.
I'm from Morocco, and I can't count how many times I've listened to this! Blessed be this trio! Heaven!
She is the best singer India has right now. Love her voice but sadly they replaced her with Kakkar these days. Love from Pakistan.
The violin doesn’t even sound like a violin anymore.
Her voice is angelic…
Just so impressed
Indians be like, you can have your Grammy's, we have our Hindustani and Carnatic classical music maestros to blow you out of your ground with musicality and soulful tunes
Love from Japan✨ 🇯🇵 ❤️🇮🇳🙏
The tabla player isn't shown much in the camera but he too is doing his own bit of magic that can be felt in the whole performance. Bravo guys
Can we also appreciate the Tabla artist because of him we still get connected to the original. What a beautiful composition. They made it their own which was also beautiful.
I will take another 9 minutes to think about why people dislike works like this. Like, what did they do instead? In order not to consider this as an awesomesauce rendition, if not, at least pass by? Bring it up! Somebody add a compulsory comment segment to this dislike button so that we can know WHY!
We waited more than 2 years and finally it's been released and this would be best Valentine's Day gift for us. Thank you so much for the sharing and waiting for more videos.
The Tabla at the background is actually the base of the complete song and presentation. Nevertheless awesome composition and great music. This sound good to ears, not that gully boy
WOW. Spell bound.
Berklee, you did this in 2017 and are uploading today, huh?? What were you waiting for? End of the World?? Bad, very bad on you.
1.8K dislikes? Do they consider themselves as human beings? Nobody else can sing this song with this perfection after Lataji than Shreya Ghoshal...
When Bollywood music is filled with kakkar family I'm soothing my ears hearing her pure voice ❤️❤️
"We may speak different language" "but music is a language that all people understand"
The tabla guy is underrated ....an kept the flow going ...
This is a pure treat. It is amazing to see instrumentalists getting such focus while playing. Shreya is pure magic! The sheer respect towards each other and eye communication of musicians is next level. Music binds this world. Greeting from Denmark! 🙂🙏
6:20 to 6:36 .. That violin part gave me goosebumps.. Bruhh he nailed it 🔥🔥👌👌... Literally never thought violin can sound so beautiful in a classically influenced song 💯❤
Just look at 8:50-8:56
This is called legend !
She didn’t forget to appreciate the musicians. 🌺🌺
I read somewhere once.. India is a nation of singers, whose first love is the kind of song you turn to when crying isn't enough... And I felt that
That orange haired gent [Layth Sidiq] has an elevated spirit, he's is beyond instrumentalist, he should compose. He keeps impressing w/every performance.
Coming from a completely different culture, he's still able to catch the spirit of the sound & re-express w/o upsetting the flow of the river.
The guy can sing too, but I think he's too humble & really needs to go solo at this point. Layth Sidiq you can only hide for so long!
She even applauded and thanked the musicians at the end, what a great lady!
This is beyond Grammy shreya is out of this world the musicians are out of this world. No oscar no grammy just pure music.....peace
The violin in the foreground,Sherya's voice melting in, the lauto popping and the tabla in the backgound. That was heaven.
Our Bengali Daughter, you made us proud....Much love from Bangladesh to our Indian and Pakistani brothers and sisters listening here.
Breath control is out of this world
Badi hairani ki baat hai ke English musician classical mei maharath hasil kar rahe hai aur humare India waley rap and jaane kaise kaise song kar rahe hai .. kudos guys superb ❤️❤️
Listening for 100 times.
Wow !!!!!!!!!!!!! the Violinist played so impressively as did the Lautoist.
The singer was divine.
When she says “dil ki aye dhadkan theher ja..” my heart stops.. just there..
music knows no boundaries !
a western jazz ensemble (Berklee College) + an Indian superstar (Shreya Ghoshal)
remarkable !
Listening to Lata Mangeskar and Shreya Goshal is just Great Pleasure
Music is the best Thing humans has created and one of the best voice 2020.
I respect sheya Goshal from Mauritius 🇲🇺 🙌 👌
I loved the way violinist politely ask shreya to start her lines.. What a respect we can see in his eyes and smile..
She's no doubt the greatest singer of all time.
Every Generation had there Legendary Singer.. Now 2k's is Shreya Ghoshal🔥❤
She is the only one who can do justice to Lata Mangeshkar ji's songs
Shreya is in a class of her own. However, the accompanists!!!! They were great indeed. The violinist blew my mind not just with how well, thought out and nuanced his pieces were but the fact that he went from the 7 beat rupak taal tempo to a 6 beat, during his solo, and merged back at 7 beat. Kudos to the magnificent tabla and the strings.
aapki nazro ne samjha, pyar ke kabil mujhe
Your eyes have found me worthy of your love
dil ki ae dhadkan thaher ja, mil gayi manzil mujhe
oh, beats of my heart stop now I have found my destiny
aapki nazro ne samjha
Your eyes have found me
ji hame manzoor hai, aapka ye faisla
I accept you are this decision
ji hame manzoor hai, aapka ye faisla
I agree with your this decision
kah rahi hai har nazar, banda-parvar shukriya
my every glance is saying oh my love thank you
hanske apni zindagi me, kar liya shamil mujhe
you accepted me into your life with a smile
dil ki ae dhadkan thaher ja, mil gayi manzil mujhe
oh, beats of my heart stop now I have found my destiny
aapki nazro ne samjha
Your eyes have found me
aapki manzil hun mai, meri manzil aap hai
I am your destination you are my destination
aapki manzil hun mai, meri manzil aap hai
I am your destination you are my destination
kyon mai toofa se daru, mera sahil aap hai
why should I fear storm when you are my destination, or Support
koi tufano se kah de, mil gaya sahil mujhe
Someone should tell the storm that I have found my destination, support
dil ki ae dhadkan thaher ja, mil gayi manzil mujhe
oh, beats of my heart stop now I have found my destiny
aapki nazro ne samjha
Your eyes have found me
pad gai dil par mere, aapki parchhaiya
your shadow has fallen upon my heart
pad gai dil par mere, aapki parchhaiya
your shadow has fallen upon my heart
har taraf bajne lagi, saikdo shahnaiyaa
in every direction now, hundreds of musicians play music
do jahaa ki aaj khushiyan, ho gayi haasil mujhe
today I received the happiness of both the worlds
aapki nazro ne samjha, pyar ke kabil mujhe
Your eyes have found me worthy of your love
dil ki ae dhadkan thaher ja, mil gayi manzil mujhe
oh, beats of my heart stop now I have found my destiny
aapki nazro ne samjha
Your eyes have found me
Shreya ghosal is no doubt an incredible gem that India owns. The perfection with which she sings cannot be doubted at all. The musicians are so fab that I can even listen to them alone.
Nice. But the tabla guy got kinda ignored by the lights, camera and famous! 😁
Jonny baristow is playing violin 😅
OMG this iconic song sung by Lata je, music Madan Mohan je and written by my very own Mama je Raja Mehdi Ali Khan. ❤, love from Lahore.
