I looked at the US Series, The Canadian Series, then the British Series. What amazing difference in Culture. US - Sex and money matter most Canada - if you're nice, you might get it, even with a crappy pitch British - so much attention to personal conduct, fairness and experience. I LOVE the British series. This is Classic Business Thinking, REAL business thinking, Not shallow "make millions" crap.
I also like the British version, the Canadian was down right boring. Haven't checked the US after binge watching shark tank i'm done with US shows for now.
I think that about does it for me. This episode couldn't have been scripted better. I highly doubt I will see this episode outdone. Excellent pitch and Q & A, bidding war, and solid negotiation and outcome. 10/10 most entertaining episode so far.
Dropping 2.5% per investor will be small change to what the both dragons will be bringing to the table. She handled the situation very well and therefore will succeed and be successful.
If you own 75% of the business, 2.5% is much less significant than if you are bidding to own 20-25% of the business. The Dragons are investors, they're maximising their margin; the entrepreneur is the one lacking capital, and the one who stands to benefit the most relative to their starting position. I therefore would suggest that this is a quite fair comment for the Dragons to make. It's not generous, but there is no good reason for them to exhibit generosity; it is, however, fair.
The dragons are splitting 22% share meaning they each would carry a lower equity than James would have, but the two carry a wealth of knowledge, marketing, and contacts specific to what is needed in this particular situation. And mentoring. THAT is why she's parting with 22% of her company, and that is well worth it. Calling her a stupid cow comes from greed and possibly being inept at business.
I never understand this. The dragons will always say that the change in percentage is so small it's not worth arguing over so why don't they just lower their grab by that much then? Greasy turds......
the argument doesn't work on them you idiot. it only applies to the person they're helping. that's a solid offer. two experienced investors, they're gonna want to make their money back, so obviously they want a percentage incase it flops. but if it doesn't, then she's gonna get experienced people making her more money, the 2.5% that SHE was trying to get back, wouldn't make a difference to her. it makes a difference to the people putting in thousands of pounds.
mayway fuck all those idiot haters. I’ve watched this programme since the first season, they used to be fair and it used to be about them helping people get there business going, now they milk people for every penny they can and harp on about them adding value that’s why they want such a high percentage.
The company folded a few years later. She started another company prior to that happening, and it looks like it's about to croak as well. If I were her, I'd go back to being a lawyer.
Travelling to work 5 years and seen one. Maybe , 2 ...maybe it was the same child, cud have been Solve's child , .....maybe it was solve herself playing with it....
First of all, she has a cute face and some people might not see it but I do. And second of all, I liked how she said what she said from 3:58 - 4:13 .. she phrased it so well right on the spot.
Can debra and peter ever close a deal themselves? They always have to team up to get the deal. James always offers the lowest and doesn't ever talk about what he can bring to the table.
A lot of people come on to the program with a particular dragon in mind, I think that is what happened on this occasion, she got precisely what she wanted.
7.5 % more for the experience of two dragons with vast experience and networks is not really expensive. James didn't sell himself well enough, but tried to get into a price war. If he had a lot to offer to the business, he wouldn't have gone into a price war. I'd think about it this way: Do you want 85 % of a medium business or 77.5 % of a huge one? You still have full control of the business (2/3 of the votes) and what matters is control and return on equity. I think she did well!
Its odd that despite being offered by the investee for a higher percentage, james caan still chose a lower equity percentage. He could have just said 25 percentage and the might have been splittable for the 3 dragons.
Hate how the dragons say stuff like for 2.5 percent, you would be crazy to walk away. 2.5 percent is so small etc Give it back then if its not alot? But no, its only small when they have it but its a massive percent if they had to give it back
Obviously it is easy to say as an armchair critic but I feel like she showed her cards far too early in her pitch. They were all pretty much intent on investing given Mothercare's tangible interest in the product but the way in which she buttered a few of them up really gave the impression of being desperate to have Dragons on board. I accept the tone of a pitch can be changed by how it is cut; however, I think if she hadn't given the game away so clearly, she probably could've got lower equity offers from both Deborah Meaden and Peter Jones.
Good decision. From what I've read, James and Duncan (the former in particular) prefer to lend money to businesses. That way they're creditors and have much more protection than shareholders.
Yep. I remember a case where James Caan bought 30% of a company for £30 (£1 a share) and gave the £80k "investment" in the form of a personal loan to the entrepreneur.
People like you miss the point of dragon's den.... it's not just about the money... but the background of the investors and the potential they can bring to your business.
another day, another disappointed James Caan... gives best deals, and is not accepted. he must feel sad knowing everytime an entrepreneur enters, they're basically saying, we don't think that highly of your marketing skills. we'd much prefer this woman over here, and the white guy. lol
Oh I was terrified she was going to pick James then. Instead of the power of having Deborah and Peter on board and the much bigger potential returns as a result.
Yeah but jesus christ is the narrator unneeded in the middle of the pitches. He doesn't have to explain to me what's going on, or how people are feeling. I'm not deaf and blind.
What the hell is peter doing in that deal. He’s got nothing to add that Deborah can’t do. You can see his eyes lit up with $$$. Might as well have brought Deborah down. She said she wouldn’t split less than what peters offer was but may have been more open to somewhere between James’ and peters
Solvay Biddle sounds like something you would buy in B&Q. She comes across as a tad annoying like one of those Wandsworth mummies. Probably a very nice lady though.
+LAnonHubbard It's not her "cuteness" (looks) that I find attractive. She's well-spoken (/w British accent) , confident, and a lawyer, which, together, make up for her age.
I think the observation is about the quality of the programming not whether Canada, UK or USA is the most succesful capitalist state! I also agree the British Dragon's Den is by far the best production. Though this is often the case with original programs, the remakes are never quite the same.
Haven't watched the American one much but at least with the Canadian one, you're completely wrong. They don't give a damn if you're nice, every episode there's good honest guys rejected because their business plan falls apart under scrutiny.
Some very smart and genuine people get a really good chance on here. I think not enough people put their mind and energy in to doing something positive. Instead they’d rather leave a shitty comment on RUclips rather than taking inspiration from some fantastic ideas. What’s happening to the world?
guilty as charged. also i take back what i said. your right about the british thing i just think its boring because they actually care about the business
James just shut up after making the offer. He didn't speak of his abilities, he's like, "yeah the best thing I can do for you is to give you a bigger cut, that's it. I'm the idiot with the money." The show here really made him out to be worse than he is. She should've taken that offer. If any of the offers on this show is real, that is.

its been a year since your comment Mark, have you calmed down?
I like that James guy, hes the only one whos honest, doesnt take PUNTS or lie about things being a punt to get a better deal. Hes just straight cut.
Read up on him and you might change your mind.
