  • Grow an abundance of food in a burlap sack!
You may have seen people growing potatoes in burlap sacks but this technique allows you to grow a whole garden in a sack without much land.
They are amazing for growing an abundance of food vertically in small spaces where land is scarce. They can be placed on concrete, city green spaces, backyards or anywhere else.
We learned this technique in the slums of Kampala and Nairobi where they intensively plant the sack so it is exploding in food in all directions all over the sack!
REFARMERS created this video to show how easy it is to address food security and self-reliance by growing your own food anywhere you like.
    All you need is:
1 burlap sack (usually free from your local coffee roaster)
76 ltr/20 gallon bin of soil (approximately)
76 ltr/20 gallon bin of compost (approximately)
    1 utility knife or scissors
8 - 20 vegetable starts/seeds (you can also use flowers, herbs and certain fruit and berries, strawberries work great!)
    Water
    Sun
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to comment or contact me at refarmers.org

I just found out about growing potatoes (I'm a new gardener) in burlap sacks. Thinking, "Hey, what about growing other vegetables in burlap bags?" I found your video. I love this idea, the plant tower. I have a small yard and have run out of space. Also, I was feeling horrible about thinning so may seedlings that are thriving but too close. Now I see I can give them a new place to live. Thank you!

That's amazing Michele! So glad this video helped you think about sack gardening in totally new ways! We are advocates of small scale gardening especially sack gardening and actually in the process of collaboratively developing a new platform called Tiny Gardens to share more information, school curriculums and stories about sack gardening and other very small scale gardening techniques. Hope you will join us on that platform when it's ready! We also have a Facebook page and Instagram which has loads more photos of sack gardens (also the potatoes sack gardens we did!). You can find us at Facebook.com/refarmers.org and Refarmers on instagram! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment!

You can also use this in the flower garden to showcase those climbing beauties and it requires very few materials and just a little time to build.
