  • This video shows the available free modifications for the airbox on a Honda Grom/MSX125. The removal of the internal snorkel on the airbox both increases low rpm torque, as well as high rpm peak HP. The change will provide you with slightly increased acceleration and a higher peak speed.

    I did this mod and have loads more low end torque.Only to stay safe from a broken filter,I left the mash cover on the back of the filter.I did remove the inner snorkel and left the outta one in place.Just removing the inner tube makes a big change.Also the exhaust note from my ScProducts stainless steel system sounds better,go for it,it works.

    When re fitting all the air box screws, gently rotate each screw backwards until you feel or hear a click. This should locate the original thread that the screw cut into the plastic when it was first fitted, and not cut a new second spiral, then a third, then get stripped out

    I have ridden in several rainfalls with the modified airbox and each time I checked the airbox drain for water accumulation. At no time did I find more than a few drops accumulated... this mod is safe for rain riding.

    Yes, this red connector is diagnostic, however two of the pins on it can be jumped manually to enter the ECU reset mode to "unlearn" whatever the ECU has stored over the recent few miles of riding.

    Just purchased a 2016 Grom with 850 miles on it for $800. Here in SEA it's called the MSX and they are much cheaper. I like this mod as compared to installing those stand alone air intakes. I can buy pre-programmed ECU's here for about 20 bucks that add fuel and increase the RPM limit. I suspect that the ECU replacement will more than compensate for this mod and probably a performance exhaust later. Also, just today, I installed a NGK Iridium spark plug. If I burn the top end, I can replace it for about $75 here, including labor...so no big deal. BTW, this video was well done!

    FYI... pretty sure the metal grating on the back of the air filter is there for when back-fires happen. I *think* in the US it's a regulation on stock street bikes to have it be there. If I remember correctly the idea was for it to help prevent the filter media from catching fire should a back-fire happen. Of course, don't just take my word for it, ask around. But pretty sure I remember that being the reason those metal gratings are found. I seem to remember questioning about that years ago.

  • @mofoboy100
    @mofoboy100 10 лет назад +8

    From experience, New bikes (modern bikes) have the fuel and air mixture set very lean (more air than fuel). more fuel in the mixture (richer) means better cooling a bit more lubrication and longer engine life but for the economy and fuel consumption manufacturers make the mixture more lean than rich and by doing this mod will lean it out even more possibly causing overheating and shorter engine life. Hope this helps :)

    • @MotorcycleProjects
      @MotorcycleProjects  10 лет назад +1

      The Grom/MSX eco is adaptive and can handle small change like this or a slip on muffler. Full exhaust or big bore kits should be paired with a tune as you are suggesting.

    • @mofoboy100

    • @MotorcycleProjects
      @MotorcycleProjects  10 лет назад

      No tuning is needed for any basic intake mod like this. If several significant mods were done then you would need a computer tune such as a power commander or bazzaz.

    thanks for the lesson on this, i do how ever have one question thow".- So people say that moving the screen mesh allows more airflow through, but if you totalled all those holes on the mesh screen into one giant diameter, that would be many times bigger than the smallest hole from that horn behind the air filter, so why would taking the mesh screen off make a difference? because im sure opening up anything else that allready allows more air flow than the smallest restriction which is that horn will not let anymore air travell through that horn any better.

    Hey man I just removed these snorkels and my bike seems like the torque is totally gone. I can run faster off the line than my bike. Can this be that the airbox snorkels are there to add quick fast airflow to the engine ? I also filled up 93 for the first time so maybe that’s the culprit? I’m so confused and pissed off my bike runs like crap

    I do not have a better picture of the other side of the airbox, though I know a second snorkel would not be possible. The filter sits very close to the airbox lid at the front. In order to put in a second inlet for air it would need to be drilled directly into the airbox lid. The real restriction though is not the intake to the airbox, nor the air filter. The primary restriction is the pipe going into the throttle body. Only removing the airbox and installing a cone air filter can fix that.

  • @richardgraham65
    @richardgraham65 9 лет назад +20

    Surely by rotating the snorkel and drilling the front panel full of holes and even by removing the snorkel, you now stand the chance of pulling in rainwater whilst running and water can run into air filter even when washing the bike.
    I guess once you get enough rainwater into the airbox and it soaks your paper filter enough, by removing the metal mesh backing on the filter your engine should be able to suck all of the mush that is left of the filter, straight into your throttle body.

  • @moviewumke
    @moviewumke 10 лет назад

    I did not open up my airbox yet, but I tend to believe that it is possible to place another snorkel on top at the other side of the airbox. That would combine a larger intake area with the rain-proof advantage of the snorkel. (I live in Belgium... 60% rainy wether) Do you have more detailed pictures of the other side of the airbox? Also, I'd like to know wether a non-cat pipe with the same, original damper results in better air flow.

    • @majormunky

      Cold air is more dense, so you can fit more of it in a cylinder. This allows more fuel to be burnt per cycle, thus increasing power.

    All that time and energy.... It's a good idea in theory but it would not help much. I guess if your ballin on a budget try this, but I would reccomend a cold air intake kit. It fits right on for 80 bucks and by losing the the stock air box your shedding roughly 2 pounds. The cold air intake kit will suck water though if you ride in a heavy downpour.

    The 2017 grom is vented by the tube he turns forward. I didn't turn mine in case I go off road and don't want to let dirt in; being turned toward the back may create a vacuum and be beneficial. I did pull out the portion of the tube inside the airbox and used a k&n filter that is a direct fit to the factory location.

      Xavier Adriano, it is worth it in general for throttle response. You wont see any gains in top speed. I suggest dropping a tooth in the front sprocket. Makes torque sooner and increased my top speed by a couple mph (due to safe higher rpms). Cant say the exhaust mod did much but it was done for sound and feels a little stronger.

      and now, with no safety screen, if the filter media comes apart nothing stops it going inside engine to jam up throttle body and possibly wreck valves and piston. DNA makes a re-use-able high flow filter you may want to consider. DNA part number is P-H1N13-01 .
      www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.XDNA+P-H1N13-01+.TRS5&_nkw=DNA+P-H1N13-01+&ghostText=&_sacat=0
      actually for dry and fair weather riding.... that open front airbox might work.... expect to clean or replace filter more often. I doubt it gains much over closed box with snorkel.

  • @lindseycampbell3023

    Two things. Turbulent air moves faster. Second I agree that honda has made a labyrinth for the air flow, and most manufacturers do for the reason of separation of air and water. Example, puttles or riding in the rain.

    Have you tried putting the intake tube on the insides to give the air more directional flow

    • @MotorcycleProjects
      @MotorcycleProjects  10 лет назад +3

      I assume you are referring to the tube on the outside and placing it inside the airbox to feed air directly towards the filter? Though that would direct the intake air more quickly to the filter, the design of an airbox works on a different principle. As the engine needs to pull in air during an intake stroke it pulls the full 125cc of air. This creates suction in the airbox. The smaller an airbox is, the harder it is for the motor to pull in that amount of air. Companies have found for decades that the larger the size of the airbox, the better power and throttle response and engine will have as it isn't wasting as much power trying to draw in the intake air.
      With your suggestion about directing the airflow that would only be helpful in a small airbox where it was designed for high RPM power only, perhaps like a Formula 1 engine where laminar flow is necessary. (Google laminar flow) In short, it means that the nature of the intake pipe plus the high speed of the incoming air will have momentum and the intake pipe would be shaped to achieve a slight compression of air as it enters the airbox. Though the principal is sound, it's not practical on the Grom or even 600cc supersport bikes which run near 20,000 rpm.
      In the case of the Grom, the only way to remove restriction on the intake side is to ensure the airbox volume is large with a high amount of filter media. Further restriction can be removed by installing an oversized cone filter directly onto the throttle body and removing the airbox. Even with this modification the power increase is only slightly noticeable. These types of modifications make small differences to an otherwise stock bike, but later when we have Big Bore kits available they will play a greater role in maximizing the power output of these little engines.

    If you really want to mod that air box and get the most out it, why not just cut a hole in the drivers left front of the air box "LID" and create a ram air effect from the front giving you even more power! I would even go one step further and seal the original snorkel hole at the top rear of the box so it only breathes from the ram air hole cut into the lid, creating an almost supercharging effect! And you can make that hole as large as you want to!

    I got my grom for dirt cheap because the guy did this mod plus drilled like 8 holes in the air box cover and it made it not even start I put it back to stock and plugged the holes in the cover and it fired right up did 60mph then took only the inner air tube out from inside and topped out at 68 to 70 bouncing back an forth and I weigh 215lbs so I like the intake mod but only with taking out the inner tub and that's it.....it made a difference and is still safe from rain and dirt

      Jerod Dull 215lbs and 70mph? Does it have a hidden turbo you don't know about too? Gonna need proof. Link me to your video.

      Kevin Trombley I know right i weigh less than him and i spent 1000+ dollars on performance mods and lightweight parts and i still can't get past 64 mph lol

      @@10klotterywinner29 I weigh almost 190 pounds and my Grom (MSX) is all stock and I topped it out at 107 kph (66mph). I'm going to start doing some simple mods, like this one (just remove the inner tube) in the video, a pre-programmed ECU available here for $20 and I just installed a NGK Iridium spark plug. Hopefully I'll get some noticeable difference. Maybe a performance exhaust down the road.

    whatever how you modify the air filter, carp, or whatever for more power there is a maximum speed which is set by the factory, and it will not exceed the maximum speed, unless you use power commander to reset the maximum speed

      Yuminashi also makes a stand alone aftermarket ECU that has two engine governor settings. I am not sure that I would recommend extra rpms as a routine...unless engine life does not matter to you.... • @Brad_-mc2yp
      @Brad_-mc2yp 7 лет назад

      there is a higher chance of water getting in but there is a drain whole in your air box so your fine....my grom is 2016 and it works...2017 should also work

      @10klotterywinner29 6 лет назад

      Brad_3307 A 2017 and a 2016 is the same thing because i bought my 2017 in 2016 cause they didn't make it till about august of 2016 and fun fact if something is made after 6 months of the year it is considered next years model! Haha so in theory a 2016 honda grom doesnt exist cause the 2016 groms information in a dealer says 2017 lol

    i value your opinion and would like to know, if i go K&N plus freer exhaust is there any possibility i with cause damage as a result of being too lean. You have probably answered this well but i am unsure Thnx

    • @TerryMMA
      @TerryMMA 9 лет назад +1

      you will have to play around with the jet and idle mixture screw,run it too lean and you can burn a hole in piston.keep it stock as honda intended.50mph is about as fast as you want to go on a 125 if you keep pushing it for speed your just kill the motor over time.

      ***** ORLY? Where are those screws located?

    • @TerryMMA
      @TerryMMA 9 лет назад

      screw underneath carb towards engine or the rear will be mixture screw and on the side of the carb is the idle adjuster

    why don't you just drill a hole in the front of the air box so the air has a direct feed to the filter?

    • @MotorcycleProjects
      @MotorcycleProjects  10 лет назад

      That would allow water to saturate the air filter when riding in the rain or through large puddles.

      The best part is that this is reversible. So far, every single Grom owner on the forums who has a Grom capable of 65+ mph speeds it has required modification to the airbox (or replacement with a new intake such as the K&N R-1100 filter pod) as well as a change to the gearing or exhaust.

      long tubes generally are intended to provide more torque at lower RPMs

    • @HifeMan
      @HifeMan 8 лет назад

      +Mudux You do lose torque at lower rpm's but get way more torque and hp at mid to top end with a mod or k&N pod going by a dyno.
