Die meisten Menschen entscheiden sich für eine Laufbahn als Musiker - William Fitzsimmons hatte eigentlich kaum eine Wahl. Zwar absolvierte er ein Psychologie-Studium und arbeitete jahrelang als Therapeut. Doch geboren in ein Elternhaus, wo die selbstgebaute Kirchenorgel des Vaters neben Piano, Posaune und Gitarren herumstand, lernte der hochtalentierte Singer-Songwriter schon in ganz jungen Jahren, was es bedeutet ein Instrument nicht nur zu spielen, sondern zu beherrschen. Das hinterließ Spuren. Ob Banjo oder Ukulele, Melodica oder Mandoline - wenn es seinen herzzerreißend ehrlichen Indie-Folk bereichert, spielt Fitzsimmons die Sache am liebsten selbst ein und behält damit ein ums andere Mal Recht. Vom kultverdächtigen Debüt „Until When We Are Ghosts“ (2005) bis zum diesjährigen „Ready The Astronaut“ spannt der Alleskönner aus Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania ein tausendfach schattiertes Oeuvre auf, das in seiner kompositorischen und stilistischen Eigenständigkeit nicht ohne Grund mit Lichtgestalten amerikanischer Folkmusik wie Iron & Wine, Sufjan Stevens oder dem late and great Elliot Smith verglichen wird.
Vom 22.-25. September fand das Reeperbahn Festival 2021 nicht nur vor Ort sondern erneut auch im umfassenden Livestream statt. Seit dem Debüt im Jahr 2006 hat sich das Reeperbahn Festival zu einem der wichtigsten Treffpunkte für die Musikwelt entwickelt und zeigt, wie sich ein überbordendes musikalisches Line-Up mit musikwirtschaftlichen Interessen und zivilgesellschaftlichem Engagement verbinden lässt.
Neben Konzerten umfasste das Programm auch Formate aus der Bildenden Kunst oder Virtual Reality sowie ein thematisch vielfältiges Film- und Literaturangebot. Im Rahmen von Sessions, Showcases, Networking Events und Award-Shows konnten Fachbesucher*innen des Reeperbahn Festivals Musik neu denken, erleben und hören.
Unsere Festivals finden im Zeichen des Miteinanders statt- Rassismus, Sexismus, Homophobie und Ausgrenzung finden bei uns keinen Platz.

Most people actually choose a career in music - William Fitzsimmons had little choice. Although he had studied psychology and worked as a therapist for many years, being born into a home, in which his father's self-crafted church organ stood next to the piano, a trombone and some guitars, the highly talented singer-songwriter learned at a very young age what it means not only to play an instrument, but to master it. Which left its marks. No matter if banjo or ukulele, melodica or mandolin - when it comes to his heartbreakingly honest indie-folk, Fitzsimmons will preferably lace any instrument into the record himself and has proven to be right in doing so again and again. From his cult debut “Until When We Are Ghosts” (2005) to this year's “Ready the Astronaut”, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s all-rounder encompasses an oeuvre of a thousand shades, which in its compositional and stylistic independence is not without reason comparable to the shining figures of American folk music like Iron& Wine, Sufjan Stevens or the late and great Elliot Smith.
From September 22-25, Reeperbahn Festival 2021 did not only take place on site but also in a comprehensive livestream once again. Since its debut in 2006, Reeperbahn Festival has become one of the most important meeting points for the music world and shows how an exuberant musical line-up can be combined with music business interests and civil society engagement.
In addition to concerts, the programme also included formats from the visual arts or virtual reality as well as a thematically diverse film and literature offering. In the context of sessions, showcases, networking events and award shows, Reeperbahn Festival professionals were able to think, experience and listen to music in a new way.
