- Factory Obscura is a collective of artists and volunteers in Oklahoma City who embrace the oddity of the city in their wild, immersive installations. The goal is never prescriptive-rather, everyone builds a vision together and explore the unexpected as a part of the process. Factory Obscura is breathing new life into the art scene in OKC by rejecting conformity and building a new, sustainable model for creative business.

I live here and didn't even know this was a thing.
Me too I knew nothing about it. Apparently other than about 100 ppl that were there we were all oblivious to any of this. Not like I'd go if I did know. Legal medical weed do a video everyone can relate to vice
@@problemchild4571 lmao fukn same. Hard pass.
It’s on 9th Street, everyone used to call it the womb. Right next to S and B Burgers, Iguana Mexican Grill, and Sara Sara Cupcakes.
Same. I have a feeling Oklahoma is trying to follow in Colorado’s footsteps. Speaking from as a Colorado native and now living in Oklahoma
Sameee
If there's on thing I want people to know about Factory Obscura, it's that the people in this group are truly the most welcoming people I've ever met.
I've only ever lived in OKC and always thought I'd have to move to find a scene I'm comfortable in. I've been dealing with bipolar disorder and would spend months in the house.
Then I learned about the first exhibit they did and visited with my husband and daughter. It was genuinely the most incredible thing I'd seen in okc.
Volunteering with this collective truly helped me get through a rough time and inspired me to stick with my art. I wanted to give up because I thought there was no place in my hometown for my weirdness and my artwork.
This video is amazing, but there's no way to capture what is happening in this collective. If you come as you are, no matter your class, skill set, or background, they'll accept you and become a second family.
since you are a in OKC, find some psilocybin shrooms and do in a shamanic setting..
We're so happy you found your way to Factory Obscura! Thanks for being part of the magic with us.
Love reading your story!
These people strike me as the same type that are "welcoming" only of people who think the same, and if not immediately shunned.
@@404nonexistent sorry you feel that way. I've known this group for two years and like I said in my original comment, they dont care about your background, political leaning etc, they just appreciate anyone willing to help finish a project or donate time. If anything I think most people arent used to being in a space like that and are hesitant to get involved. It's just something you have to see first hand.
shouts out to vice for showing a glimpse of us weirdos from okc! you love to see it
Gay
I'm from Shawnee, but we were just there today. Not the factory but OKC. as many times as I've been out of state to other places and actually seeing other cities and stuff, it really made me appreciate it here. And I hate it here. Lmao
But what is this doing to help the economy?
@@urbansasquatch5537 you ain't shit

I've smoked weed behind this place before
I have never been to US, but i genuinely felt alive just by seeing that somebody is doing something magical. Good luck guys, you are doing great
You should come one day, there’s lots of magical stuff going on, lots of amazing places
It's super exciting seeing the Oklahoma City art scene exploding!
that just means it will quickly be gentrified and dulled by outsiders :( :(
@@17daysofsodom47 there's literally no life in OKC so I'm open for it.
Im happy to see something where I live. Im going to okc today so i gotta check this out.
Hey at least I can got to this now since I live in Oklahoma.
Enjoy it man
Is there any native amerindian left there ?? Full blooded or half blooded, i don't mind the 1% ones

How is no one going to mention Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips at any point in this video? He is the one who really brought this together.
The video is on Factory Obscura the collective. He didn't have anything to do with the founding of factory obscura, they got the Womb, which is the third instillation, from Wayne.
The womb gallery was to sick.

No he didnt.
I like to think that psychedelics have had a big influence here.
@Conor fuck off...what do you know?
@@lcarthel I know plenty and hes pretty much right
@@isaiahd5396 Alright, show me some research data that proves psychedelics fuck up peoples brains and nothing else. I can prove otherwise, and you two clearly have no first hand experience.
@@isaiahd5396 yeah if you're a moron and take acid all the time it will fry your brain everybody knows that. Just like if you eat fast food all the time it will fuck your body up. Psychedelics done responsibly and in moderation can do wonders for the mind, relationships, creativity and even alleviate depression stress and anxiety

Oklahoma....Oklahoma!!!!
Who would guess. ???
I mean we don’t have much but a Memorial for a Bombing, and now we’re getting more shit
well it is a city.
I kinda forgot about the bombing and i drove through and saw the aftermath not too long afterward but before 9/11. It was overshadowed rather quickly.
That is not art. That is degenerate to call that art. The people who created this monstrosity should have their eyes gouged out!
@@popev3887 you're over reacting a bit. Art is in the eye of the beholder. So behold something different that suits you.
This is mad cool you guys I hope you have a big future with this. Also lol at the people saying no art...did you even watch the video? Like wow sis get a checkup.

I finally live near something like this. I'm so excited to visit soon! I've been so down with this world lately that this just sounds nice
I need to do this ASAP! So happy to see OKC becoming more and more colorful.
The summer solstice party was one of my favorite things I’ve ever experienced, I adore factory obscura!
I used to live in Oklahoma never would I move back but hey S/O to the O!
i grow up in Moore/Oklahoma City; I miss it so much. It was a great place to grow-up.
i like seeing stuff about other places like oklahoma. like the video stated, the middle of the country is overlooked. the only thing we hear about from oklahoma is tornadoes, country music, and cows (nothing wrong with any of that, but there is more than that.).
J. Jo and the bombing of the FBI building which is the worst domestic terrorist attack ever in the US.
@@notsure6187 I was in the 8th grade at Highland East Jr High in Moore when that happened; in band class. This girl that played the flute lost both of her folks in the bombing.
@Toby Thompson lol
I drive by this everyday to work! I only knew it as Wayne Coyne's place. I had no idea this was inside!
So cool that i live in okc and this is in okc!
Maintaining cynicism through this proves you need some fun in your life. It’s nice how humble they are. Really fucking cool too. I hope this video widens the audience for fun artistic experiences and art in life and in general.
I live in okc and have been to their past, temporary exhibits. This exhibit is not fully finished until September, this is just a partial phase one opening.
I live here! Thank you for shining a light on our little space of the country that most people over look. ❤️
If anyone’s in Jakarta, there’s a virtual art museum in one shopping mall, lots of VR exhibitions and one of the main attractions is we draw in one tablet or write our name and then it will be put on a swimming jellyfish on the screen.
Very exciting to see the art scene in Oklahoma getting some much needed exposure. Tulsa is a very cool city for artists and art lovers too :D
Every day I feel more and more proud of my city cuz of beautiful stuff like this.
If you live in Denver or Santa Fe you should check out Meow Wolf! I've never been to this exhibit but it's definitely in the vein of Meow Wolf
I like in the okc area I makes me so happy that Vice made a video.
now come to St. Louis and check out the City Museum! it's like an artist's fever dream in an entire 8 story building and a huge outdoor jungle gym/habitrail that has an airplane and dozens of steel paths 30-40 feet from the ground. There's also a bus hanging off the roof, a 6 story slide, a HUGE man-made cave system etc.
@qis2spent no kidding. However, this looks like the beginning of a series about awesome artist spaces. City Museun is more of an art installation turned attraction than a makerspace, but it seems to fit.
How do I as a nanna get involved I'm very created not only myself but wirh my grannies please let me know your needs I LOVE ART
Goddamn it looks insanely great. Worth the collective effort.
OMG!! THIS IS MY CITY..MY HOME!!! AND I DIDN'T KNOW THIS REMARKABLE PLACE WAS HERE...I CRIED WHEN I SEEN WHAT IV'E MISSED!!! 😢😢😢😢😢 ART IS LIFE💋...,GO OKLAHOMA CITY..GO!!!!!!!!
dont forget about Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center it is right down the street
Place is bad ass. But the City Museum in St.Louis is more badass. ;) Enjoying a show there tomorrow night on the rooftop. If you've never seen it, look it up. It's changed locations from the original spot, unfortunately Bob Cassilly passed making his newest exhibit. It's important we remember these artists through their art regardless. The man inspired me from when I was a child. It's one of my most memorable experiences as a kid, and now as an adult in St.Louis. It's such a creative space, and they've only just continued to build on to it over the years. The work has continued on in Bobs name. RIP BOB!
I used to pass by when I played PokémonGo lol but now I'm living back in Dallas. This would've been awesome to experience
I absolutely loved taking my wife to your first exhibit . Can’t wait for the mix tape .
"Sustainable business"
It relies heavily on unpaid volunteer artists.
There should be at least multiple of these spaces(not necessarily as big as this one) in EVERY city on the planet.
Thank you VICE for making of video of this, i was breathless and it blew my mind =)
Omg I live in Oklahoma and have seen these buildings and area and didn’t even know this was happening! Thanks for revealing an experience nobody would even think of as an art form!
Keep up the good work guys . You are also enriching the spirit of your people into a positive charge. Very clever.
This is so cool this is what I'm talking about simple living having fun we live in a world where most people are stressed out three jobs working hard all day this is how we need to live simple...
LOVE what they created! Amazing! Every city should have a space that accomplishes what they have.
Its alot like Moew Wolf here in Santa fe NM. Moew Wolf was the first of its kind. Its amazing to see the seed they planted take off in so many different ways. I would love to go..
Been living in Oklahoma for 7 years and always thought it was a boring wasteland. Now I want to head to OKC.
I LOOOOVE Factory Obscura!
I really really hope this is here after covid cause I live in OKC and I want to go
Yes!! These are curious and unique experiences. The detail is insane.
I had the pleasure of taking my family here about a year ago.
Coolest experience ever! 10/10 would recommend.
The worst thing about being creative is working around environments that make you think too much about the surroundings and equipment. Basically, don’t worry about getting deep and dirty. So this is great
Funny how the rest of the country is becoming so interesting yet New York feels like a dying enclave for the rich.
Very true, NYC is a Corporate city. Art comes from the soul and NYC has pretty much lost it.
How are there 65 dislikes on this video?
Atusin Krote if you (not you you specifically but the collective you) choose to be positive, then you would be inclined to say - must be 65 accidental thumb misplacements.
Because who cares about trashy new-age-retro-hippie "art" when there's bigger things going on?
This is the dopest fucking thing ive ever seen. I so want to be a part of this or something like it.
Beautiful Art I would love to try this😍
Interesting concept - thank you.
I'm an Oklahoma artist and I had no clue! This would be wicked to contribute to 😍
I had to do a double take when reading "Oklahoma City", it sounds like something from the west coast.
This is really cool. I just hope a tornado never hits that building.

In my experience whenever people set out to intentionally be unique and different.... Bad shit ends up happening! I don't like to be a wet blanket but typically you need the organic roots of a particular idea and you just f****** go with it not to set out to do things differently.you already have the vision you have the idea you're not trying to stray From the path it's just a natural progression it's what would have to happen for your vision to be fulfilled.
I'm sure that this
Sounds extremely confusing I just I hope the best for them but in my experienceit is not usually what everybody wants it to be even with the best ideas and the best intentions

I want to learn more about immersive art but not sure where to start/what to read. Stuff like one move's their body, and the image follows or music causing sound when one touches object or opening a door.. anywhere to start would be cool.. vids/books, whatever... anyone feel free to comment on right direction to go invited.
