Kolkata (UK: /kɒlˈkɑːtə/ or /kɒlˈkʌtə/, US: /koʊlˈkɑːtɑː/, Bengali: [kolˈkata] (listen); also known as Calcutta /kælˈkʌtə/, the official name until 2001) is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal, on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River 80 km (50 mi) west of the border with Bangladesh. It is the primary business, commercial, and financial hub of Eastern India and the main port of communication for North-East India. According to the 2011 Indian census, Kolkata is the seventh-most populous city in India, with a population of 45 lakh (4.5 million) residents within the city. It is a part of Kolkata Metropolitan Area (or known as Greater Kolkata) which has a population of over 1.41 crore (14.1 million) residents making it the third-most populous metropolitan area in India. In 2021, the Kolkata metropolitan area crossed 1.5 crore (15 million) registered voters. The Port of Kolkata is India's oldest operating port and its sole major riverine port. Kolkata is regarded as the cultural capital of India. Kolkata is the second largest Bengali-speaking city after Dhaka. It has the highest number of nobel laureates among all cities in India.
In the late 17th century, the three villages that predated Calcutta were ruled by the Nawab of Bengal under Mughal suzerainty. After the Nawab granted the East India Company a trading licence in 1690, the area was developed by the Company into an increasingly fortified trading post known as Fort William. Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah occupied Calcutta in 1756, and the East India Company retook it the following year. In 1793 the East India Company was strong enough to abolish native rule, and assumed full sovereignty of the region. Under company rule and later under the British Raj, Calcutta served as the capital of British-held territories in India until 1911. In that year, after assessing its geographical location, combined with growing nationalism in Bengal (Calcutta became the centre for the Indian independence movement), the British moved the capital to the relatively more centrally located New Delhi.
Following independence in 1947, Kolkata, which was once the premier centre of Indian commerce, culture, and politics, suffered many decades of political violence and economic stagnation before it rebounded. A demographically diverse global city, the culture of Kolkata features idiosyncrasies that include distinctively close-knit neighbourhoods (paras) and freestyle conversations (adda). Kolkata is home to eastern India's film industry, known as Tollywood, and cultural institutions, such as the Academy of Fine Arts, the Victoria Memorial, the Asiatic Society, the Indian Museum, and the National Library of India. Among scientific institutions, Kolkata hosts the Agri Horticultural Society of India, the Geological Survey of India, the Botanical Survey of India, the Calcutta Mathematical Society, the Indian Science Congress Association, the Zoological Survey of India, the Institution of Engineers, the Anthropological Survey of India and the Indian Public Health Association. Four Nobel laureates and two Nobel Memorial Prize winners are associated with the city. Kolkata is also known as 'the city of joy'.

Maa flyover was a game changer for traffic in kolkata metropolitan area
Yeah after 2016 roads had a major improvement. B4 2016, Kolkata had some of worst roads ever.
@@MY_ine yup that's right
the greater kolkata area saw good roads around 2012, since we didn't have mastic asphalt roads here, like we had in kolkata then
Now the Main roads in the kalyani area are being built by L and T, that's why the roads are smoother here too
specifically after the lockdown !
The barrackpore area is also undergoing a lot of changes
@@koulikdas8133 Kalyani has best roads n so does Salt Lake n is well planned. Garia, Joka having major metro n skyscraper projects so traffic which is a he'll will be all fine with better lifestyle too in next 3 yrs. Barrackpore is developing with a metro but eill take 10 yrs as it's congested too
i have seen almost every major city in INDIA...but had to say, Roads of Kolkata are much wider and smooth...
Kolkata has the least wide roads when compared to any other Tier 1 city. Have you ever been to Gurugram or Delhi or Mumbai or Pune or Chandigarh? If not then your experience is very low. Gurugram's 16 lanes Golf Course Road is enough. Kolkata has just 5% road space to the city area while Chennai has 23% and Delhi has 21%.
Ask any car drivers of Ola and Uber they will tell you Kolkata has the worst road surface of bumpy undulations. How much money goes in maintenance. Pasting is done over all major thoroughfare. It's a death trap for the bikers. Sit in a bus or Yellow Taxi you will understand.
@@AjaySingh-cz3kxwhom you replied, he didn't reply you back because he understood your motive. And you try to show your self Kolkataan but you are not. And please don't compare Kolkata with gurugram, gurugram is satelite city, it should be compare with New Town . Expend your knowledge. He just coverd very few areas of Kolkata. Kolkata traffic is much smoother then any other metropolis . EM bypass, VIP road, delhi Road are massive , shamya prasad mukherjee road is also massive .
@@AjaySingh-cz3kxI can understand your frustration , wait for sometime to come your loved one in power .

Wow just wow and just more wow, I don't have any words to describe it elaborately. Saw many other videos of these roads for so many times but don't know why this felt special and unique.
❤

Nice video
Kolkata is best
잘봤어요. 🙂^^
I think if we get the wires underground, that would improve the looks 10x. I got the news that work has already started on that. Next would be taking care of the architecture. Kolkata was a major city even 300 years ago. We have a lot of old buildings that look rusty now. Either demolish them and build new swanky buildings or renovate them.
what do you mean by kolkata was a major city 300 years ago? kolkata is one of 4 indian major megacities .
@@soumyadeepchowdhury3585 ofcourse it is. I meant it's an old city compared to Pune, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Hyderabad etc. This was a major city even 300 years ago unlike some of these other cities. So you are going to find old buildings which aren't taken care of & are uninhabited. Either demolish them or renovate them.
@@rpnrko3612 britishers spread propoganda that Kolkata founded by them but its exposed by counrt . Kolkata basically didn't have particular founder , it become a city by gathering people. Armenians were present in kolkata before britishers
@@rpnrko3612look old buildings are heritage it should be kept. But yes in main road side area if there are old buildings that should got renovation
@@soumyadeepchowdhury3585 Everything is heritage. The slums near my home was also built 20 years ago, should we keep it? If there are old uninhabited buildings in the middle of the city that are not adding economic value to the city we should demolish them and build office spaces in that place. Generating revenue is more important than some old rusty building taking up space in central city.
Kolkata was mumbai of olden times.
Kolkata is Kolkata. Better then Mumbai
@@soumyadeepchowdhury3585yes
Kolkata is by far the ugliest city in India, doesnt compare even to 2nd tier cities like Bangalore and Hyd. @@soumyadeepchowdhury3585

West bengal needs clean roads very sad for there unclean roads and streets 😢
Are you blind or what???
@@Gareeb1997are you blind ?huh? Can't u see how the pathetic roads looks like ?.... it needs regular maintenance
See the lane markings been fading away ..also look at the dust and few trash on the periphery of the road
@@aksh_005where did you seen pathetic roads in this video??? And and almost in all places road markings area avaliable. I think it may be according to your political views. Because there is 9ne political party who just tell negative things after loosing elections in WB

Please, for God's sake, stop painting every roadside divider, median, and wall in black and white, yellow and white, or any other colours-it looks unattractive and unprofessional. Instead, it would be far better to adopt international standards by keeping the medians unpainted or in a neutral grey colour, which would give the city a cleaner and more modern appearance.
Additionally, it is crucial to clear all light posts of cables and wires. Almost every pole has something hanging from it, creating a messy and unkempt look. Introducing road-cleaning machines to remove the dust and debris that accumulate along the sides of the roads is also essential. Keeping the streets clean and visually appealing would greatly improve the overall quality and image of our urban environment, making it a more pleasant place for residents and visitors alike.
And keeping trams which WB plans to remove
And painted curbs is not a big deal lol
