- The 2021 Maserati Ghibli Trofeo ($139,005 CAD as specced, ~$119,200 USD) is powered by a 580 horsepower twin-turbo V8 that’s built at the Ferrari plant in Maranello. This is the first time that the Trofeo nameplate has been attached to a Ghibli and the first time any Ghibli has a V8. Thomas and James go for a cruise to see how the Ghibli Trofeo fairs and compares to its rivals. What will they think? We hope you enjoy the episode. Subscribe!!

The good news is that by this time next year you’ll be able to pick one up used with 5,000 miles for $50k and then it will be a great car 😂
Confession time: were you guys responsible for the tire tracks at 6:37?
Yeah I wanna know too
Haha was curious about that too!
According to the end of the tracks it was a mustang😂
@@TheFrontsideskater 😂😂😂😂
Pretty clean tracks, had to be Thomas
James' deep knowledge of minutiae combined with Thomas' insights are what make Throttle House the best car channel on youtube.
I think you will like the videos from Jason cammisa
The balanced speaking time of the two and seamless transitions are impeccable.
I would kinda like to hear and see more from Carston.
@@Spiros219 have you watched that one TH episode with Jason? They were such a great trio with the Challenger Hellcat Redeye (or demon I don’t remember exactly) v Camaro ZL1 v Mustang GT500
@@ramennoodlz yeah that ep was hilarious
That engine bay is absolutely amazing. It may be, of modern cars the best looking engine bay on the market.
$140k for a Ghibli?! 😵💫 I’ve always loved their aesthetic, Ferrari-derived engines, and 580hp in a sedan is insane but Stellantis is TRIPPIN’ with the Chrysler parts bin pieces and potential reliability. 😮💨
it's $112k base price in the US, and also you're 10000000% leasing it so no need to worry about long term reliability lol. interior on these is super nice, the FCA switchgear is here and there but the quality of the leather and overall interior vibe are that of a expensive car.
@@myemailiscool Sorry but I strongly disagree except for the leasing portion. Ghibli's interior is a shit when you are comparing it to other comparable low 6 figure price point models - it is clear that Maserati has not put much thought into the interior design. When the first model came out, you weren't event be able to put a CD in straight. Although newer, similarly priced Levante is far better designed, using similar quality materials for interior. Also FCA parts bin items are not only known for bad reliability, but feeling not tidy and very cheap when operating the buttons and knobs.
Wait about 4 or 5 years, when they start going for about $20k on the used market 😄
And before someone goes all literal, Ghiblis are absolutely notorious for depreciating like a rock. This was tongue in cheek to point that out
I agree with Park, The interior is that of a toyota camry, or Honda Accord. It is far from the level of Mercedes, BMW, Audi whom are its main competitors.
Man, I look forward to these extra reviews as much as I do the full ones
Dont you two ever split... I look forward to the good chemistry and comedy within the great reviews. Keep it up!
My theory for the stelvio and levante being more animated is because consumers are buying more crossover/ suv type of vehicles so it would make sense to put the more engaging driving experiences in those vehicles. Just my thoughts.
Also I think it's because those are all wheel drive, where as the Giulia and Ghibli are only rear wheel.
And the reason more people are buying those vehicles is because they keep taking features from other vehicles and making excuses for not including them. Why buy a sedan for the same money with fewer features? They're stripping other vehicles of features and then pretending to be shocked when people don't buy the shit.
But why intentionally neuter the sedans? An exciting personality is the only chance this car has against the competition.
@@The_Stanman I swear car manufacturers follow markets when they should lead them. They build sedans for older people because older people are buying them. Instead of thinking "hey let's bring young people into sedans by making them more appealing to them" they just shrug and go "screw it, retirement spec. Make it beige!"
@@wp8286 LOL no thats not how it works, awd would make it 1000× less animated.
After hating this car for years, I drove my sisters SQ4. She got it before covid hit for 38k in great condition and 2 years old. At that price, it is a phenomenal driving experience. Unique exhaust, 424hp, proper chassis and direct steering for its class. At 100+, it’s just not the proper full package a M5 or E63 is.
Maserati shouldn't be competing with BMW or Mercedes. It should be competing against Austin Martin and Bentley. The fact it's not considered competitive with these brands is a major issue for the company.
@@KevinSmith-qi5yn - That's all in your mind. Maserati's haven't been priced at the level of Astons or Bentley's for a very long time. Building cars at that price point would have encroached on Ferrari sales as well which FIAT didn't want. A Granturismo was priced at the same level as a V8 Vantage, but the V12 Vantage, DB9, DBS, Rapide etc were all a lot more expensive. Just the same for the Continental.
What's the cheapest new Aston you can buy? Generally £130/140k. Bentley's are far north of £150k. Cheapest new Maserati = £60k.
BMW/Audi/Merc are who they're competing with now. They want high volume sales.
@@KevinSmith-qi5yn Maserati has always been between Fiat and Ferrari.
It is beautiful
“It’s always lower than you think” elite subtle joke lmfao
?
I personally have always liked the Ghibli but Maserati made an error a decade ago deciding to go for volume. Becoming an Italian BMW destroys the brand; BMW rose to its level of prominence; Maserati was always far "above" a lowly BMW and they decide to come downmarket to chase volume?? Bad idea. Alfa Romeo can be the Italian BMW (and are well on their way to achieving that). Maserati should be Porsche at a minimum; maybe even slightly above.
Totally agree. Going down market did nothing positive for the brand other than destroy its reputation as an exotic Italian sports car company.
you make a good point.
It goes more against porche, Alfa Romeo goes against Bmw Mercedes Audi
Porsches will last. Anyone, anyone who buys a Mas is trying to get eyes on him and it’s not about buying a good car.
@@prism8289 porche are the same, only the aircooled ones last, if you want a car to last you buy a Lexus or a Toyota
The charcoal grey Ghibli in Fast 7 really made me appreciate the look of the front end of this car. Looks really sleek with dark colors/accents and black wheels.
Mazerati has been more of a Jaguar competitor than any german company's one.
The greatest duo for car reviewing👏👏🔥🔥
I just realized we haven't seen James playing with the wheel on his mini slalom going down the road bit in ages. Thomas sort of did it with the camera in the cabin. it always made me a laugh a bit. love the channel
Another absolutely amazing review guys. Loved it. The humor is always welcomed. After watching every Ghibli review on utube looking for one saying something nice so i could feel confident to purchase one yours validated its a great underestimated vehicle. Thanks again for tipping the scales for someone sitting in the fence. Have a great day.
Let’s goooooo! I’ve missed this channel!!!!!
Just wait when the new Grecale and MC20 is available, both are clean sheet products from Maserati.
Too bad Saab stopped
I've driven a Ghibli Trofeo and it is night a day difference over the standard car. I love the styling and interior myself, the materials and Italian leather are fantastic. Seats a little hard yes. But the price tag of around $120k US is hard to stomach.
That's almost m5 comp money.
@@yuriteixeira5816 but as they said... This is more fun to drive than that M5 comp.... So what would be the car to buy? The Uber competent Beemer that is capable well beyond reason and care for your driver's license or this...? Fun at more normal speeds and more soul.
@W0o0dy I would entirely avoid this car and rather get a cheaper fun to drive car and a m4 or something
Or just get a 911 and be done with it.
Where I live, you can't do "fun" unless you go to a track.
@@W0o0dy People keep saying that, I think it's very harsh. Have an M5 base in the family, that car isn't "boring". It's a beast to drive and thrilling. If you want that drama get the M comp exhaust or akrapovic.
@@drhassan6892 my point was more that the M5 is not THIS engaging at normal speeds. A Maserati is pretty good at serving up fun en theater at lower speeds so you could enjoy the sportiness more often.
The current lineup feels like a remnant of a bygone era of a Maserati being hampered by FCA's penny-pinching shenanigans, and an odd affair with Ferrari.
MC20 arrived with warm reception from motor journalists, and if Grecale and GranTurismo spy shots are anything to go by, Maserati is intent on reinvigorating their brand image. I hope it works out. Among the many automakers out there, I can't deny that the Trident badge has charmed me for what it could be.
I hate what Chrysler has done with Maserati
@@satsumagt5284 Chrysler didn’t do anything with Maserati.
FCA was cost saving until recently. They are the only ones out of debt out of the big three now they can spend more money
There is no bigger platform and component sharing auto manufacturer than VW. Touareg to Cayenne. Same platform, suspension, transmission, general electronics and AWD systems. At 3 times the selling price. That is an insult to all Porsche owners.
@@philipciantar4824 That's a rather disingenuous statement for the modern automotive industry. Staying within VW group as an example, a Panamera will not drive the same as a Continental GT despite being on the same platform, and even going as far as having similar powertrain options (VW/Audi's TTV8 may as well be the equivalent of Toyota's V6 in how frequently it appears across its product lineup) Suspension and basic chassis architecture are not the be-all end all of how a vehicle ultimately feels. There is still refinement left off the table, be it NVH, ride quality, handling, and design that will warrant actual buyers into looking at the upper brands. Development is already as expensive enough as is, and competent platform sharing allows these automakers to create distinctly different experiences without expending mountains of capital they will need to plan future products, and services while making enough margin to pay their workforce. These are businesses after all.
I love the Maserati Brand, but this car really does look tame and simple. I think it would look so much better with a meaner looking front and rear package.
It’s a ghibli, they kinda are tame. Doesn’t matter if it’s a trofeo or not. You want something aggressive and mean looking? Get the GranTurismo 👌🏼
@@ImTehRiZe The ghibli was never meant to look aggressive or compete with m5, e63 and so on. Having owned an sq4, the idea behind it is more of a bridge between luxury and simplistic sportiness. The person shopping for an m5 will never look at this but an older rich person will, because it's a car he'd take his family shopping with, or would go to a comfy road trip. He wouldn't go to a track with one or try to get performance out of it.
@@mariosconstantinou3631 That’s basically what I‘ve said
If this simple don’t know what’s not
It is milder than I would expect the tridents to look like. If I have plans to restyle the ghibli will be putting the prefacelift ghibli nose and a custom butt.
The watch Will Smith wore in MIB was a Hamilton Ventura in case you were wondering.
Ha, came here just to say this. Thomas is right, too.
The B segment brands always seem interesting to me. By nature of being “not the best”, they offer something just different.
Btw I’m not sure if y’all do requests, or if the idea is just interesting to y’all, but do y’all get Buicks in Canada? What do you think driving a Regal Sportback RS would be like?
Buick Canada has switched to an all SUV lineup. Enclave, Envision, Encore GX, Encore.

Bravo, bravo James
Pribably your most underappreciated line
11:23 "maybe I am at home in a Maserati" what a line 😝
Seeing this car makes me appreciate the Quattroporte 5 so much, Maserati needs to look back to it to see how to move forward with their sedans.
Thanks for the always great content guys! Cheers 🍻
Forget BMW, Audi, Merc...none of that turns head.. Every Indian IT worker drives BMW here in Silicon Valley..BUT MASERATI IS A GEM!
I think so too. Plus nowadays M3 CS is 200k (185k EUR) in Europe so 140k is a bargain for a V8 performance saloon. One of the last too.
wonder if I could get a discount if I just ordered the engine.
Out of curiosity, what was scarier, the factor 5 shelby or the ford gt?
My bet is the GT, based on James' reaction after spinning.

Guy, just a suggestion... Have a monthly TH in review/rant where the whole team gets on camera and rants or raves on the making of that month's TH, the cars, the roads, the traffic, the bloopers, favourite caveats etc. Would be fun....
Ok it’s expensive. Inside is old, But objectively the design is GORGEOUS despite is an old project. The V8 by Ferrari is a gemme 😍.
If I'd buy a Maserati, I'd buy it out of love for the brand. It wouldn't have to be better than a BMW or Mercedes. It would only have to be good enough to suit my needs. And the combination of a decent V8, acres of Italian cowhide and that lovely badge on the steering wheel are certainly a good start towards customer satisfaction.
You get it!
Nagi-> Too expensive and not enough world interest. ERGO: You would be one of the few new car buyers of this vehicle. You will ALSO notice the rather steep depreciation of your capital. I hope the stingy cheap crap of the FIAT parts bin will keep you (your words) in the customer satisfaction.
@@wimschweer6738 you are certainly right. There is no logical reason to buy such a car. Then again, logic would have very little to do with it, in my case. I wouldn't be the first nor the last fool to buy a car with his heart instead of his mind.
True.
140k for a badge on a steering wheel you can post to your Facebook once 🤣
It is very nice second hand car imo. After massive depreciation it will have good value for money
You got it. Perfect value after 3 years.

Maserati, the car company I continually want to love, but keep getting hurt by. lol
So...did you like the car?? I was kind of thrown around the whole time with "don't like, like, don't like, like...hard seats..."
I drove the other week a Quattroporte GranLusso with only the twin-turbo V6 in it and I had full manual and sport settings on and even though it is larger and heavier than the Ghibli, I still think it drove amazing. Comfortable, sport suspension (because I turned it on), great sound, smooth acceleration, speed...love it. I can't imagine this being worse than that.
I think they were mixed. It’s the car you buy as you like the styling & want the Ferrari engine
@@DFWsCars that's why I'd buy it!
Please correct me if I am wrong
I don't think Maserati ever made a sporty car.
It's more like for people who want a Ferrari v8 in their sedan.
Maserati does not cater to enthusiasts, never did.
Maserati fans also do not watch RUclips, I think....
I’ve always loved Maserati. They make wonderful, beautiful, gorgeous pieces of pure garbage. They are so unreliable to be worth 140k but if I ever have the money I’ll buy one I love them even if they are rubbish.

You can say the same about bmw lol they're disposable cars and depreciate too fast for what the sticker price is

What’s with the red! Nothing, it’s some good red trim 😉
A Maserati Ghibli feels like a classy elegant and exotic sedan, that has the feel of a car from the early 2000's
But I sat in one once, and I loved it despite the fact
I genuinely think that if maserati just upgraded the base trim interior and some how their team figures out how to stop their depreciation % (similar to what I’d say about many Bentleys and some German cars) they would be worth almost every penny for that sound
Who put the car in the ditch at 6:37? James practicing with the GT40 again? Sorry, too soon?
I love these dumb intros. They bring light to my life. Please don't stop
Welcome back, let's get revving.
Here in Utah in a sea of Teslas, Audis, Beamers and Mercedes...these Ghiblis do still stand out quite a bit as something more exotic. Almost no one buys Jaguars here so Jags stand out quite a bit as well
Thank God I will buy one for myself

I’d like to give thanks to Throttle House- they rule!
Someone needs to start tuning these cars..they would make a fortune...so much potential on these cars being twin turbo and all
The Italians have had that problem for 80 years, never able to perform as well as the Germans, but they do try.
Well, I'm not even sure if they're trying with this. This is awful.

Fun, light hearted and spot on review. Definitely over priced and would be scary to own as the miles are racked up.
Why's this?
It’s irrelevant how much the sticker on this car is bc at least the Midwest United States when you go to a mazi dealership it’s like let’s make a deal they’ll dam near listen to any offer as long as it’s more then what they paid Stelantis for the car

The AC vents look so familiar ... I know the light switches and ignition button are the same in a 2014 dodge .. This car look old and new at the same time..
Anyone who says those red trim pieces look good is not yet old enough to drive.
The red accent on those vents looks like an Automation car fixture that bugged out in an update, switching to that default red paint.

Damn, Kia have stepped up their design game with this new generation Stinger.
Maserati is going through what Cadillac went through years back when they had to chart a course for themselves and build on their legacy for sportiness and comfort from pre-WWII. Now Cadillac is beginning to finally make cars worth driving. Likewise, It time for Maserati to rediscover its place on the car world. Especially now since many other manufacturers are going to be turning electric. Suddenly that big V8 crutch that Maserati has relied on for years is gone then what.. the infotainment is from 2006, seats suck, styling is boring.
I don’t think Maserati will survive zero emission, let alone if Ferrari releases their SUV concept then Maserati will have nothing special with the Levante Trofeo and other models. Also Cadillac survived because they were necessary for GM, but Maserati’s just a budget tag-along.
