I've made this joke before as well, but I don't think Rex is dense or unaware. It's more so that's he not completely ready to start a relationship. He hasn't really grown up around relationships (especially if his parents are dead) and he is still quite young - 15, in fact. I think he's fully aware that people might have feelings for him, but right now he doesn't want to go anywhere with those feelings. Plus, taking Pyra to Elysium was his first priority. Perhaps he would want to live in Elysium (and probably age a bit more) before he would want to start any relationships.
