Why do they don't have FM station that plays nice music all over the country like this constantly? I remember when I was stationed in Fort Meade Maryland from 1976 to 1979 The Quiet Storm radio station in Washington DC zip latest type of music all day. We need to bring it back
As with most of the best things in life,It's Knowing where to look !. Do You Not Think So So Smooth Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhuuuuuuuussssshhhhhhhhhh. Now, If you listen carefully..........
Happy 79th birthday to Jazz Funk genius Lonnie Liston Smith, who after playing with Pharoah Sanders and Miles Davis he formed Lonnie Liston Smith and the Cosmic Echoes & released some of the best albums you would most like to hear
Sounds good. For me it was 40 years ago driving home after a party in Birmingham. Coventry street lights were in the distance, it would soon be daylight. Dad would be mad, but I had my sister with me for back-up. We said goodbye to the lads who drove us home and my sister was given the cassette which was playing this tune. I've never tired of it. (can't remember the lads though)
This was my mom's favorite record she passed away in 2013 I miss her she was the one that introduced me to jazz I'm not saddened because everyone has a memory and their lives she was the greatest Mom ever
What a peaceful & tranquil piece, Love this song...makes you just take a deep breathe & say Ahhhh after a long day or the beginning of a fresh new day!
I live in the woods so u can imagine how the sunrise look.....I open my blinds and open the patio door to my bedroom and play this....it just takes me away!!!!
For me it is tropical paradises, but for others on this board it can be the woods, the mountains or on a cruise. whatever your paradise is, This is indeed a paradise song.
I have a plethora of memories, very nice ones, on behalf of Lonnie Liston Smith's spirit- inspired music...!!!! Question, Is his brother still touring with him? & did Lonnie @ some point receive his doctorate in music? If not, He should have. Thanx' 4 decades of beautifully- artistic expression...!!!!
Lonnie's albums during the Columbia years and the subsequent Doctor Jazz period are collector's items. They typify what smooth jazz and atmospheric funk would sound like. During 1978, Lonnie released two projects. This is from that classic 2nd album, Exotic Mysteries.
I'm magically transported back to the Summer of '78 &listening to the Late Melvin Lindsey on The Original Quiet Storm on Howard University's WHUR 96.3 FM. Progressive Jazz @ it's best.
Lonnie was such solid innovator especially during the 70's and 80's. What we call "Smooth Jazz" was partly influenced by his work. One of my favorite artist of all - times.
i recall too many occasions being forced to listen to such music growing up. but now 40 years later, wow, mum was simply introducing me to other cultural music genres of that time; which have stood the test of time. and oh how I so much appreciate this. this is absolutely a gorgeous arrangement. thanks mum. xoxo
Hassan my brother thank you for always being there from the time we were 6an 7 years old and still today we're here for each other listening to Lonnie all over again.
I understand completely, listened and likes..... Most of us I'm sure could care less..... Lonnie and his true followers are already knowing from way back, so we sit back and enjoy all of his works and embrace it for ourselves until the end of time! ✌️
I used to tune in religiously to Robbie Vincent's show on Radio London and I expect that's where I first heard this wonderful track. That was in the early to mid 80s. I still love it as much now as I did back then. In fact probably more because it has an added nostalgia trip. Oh my days! :)
This is my vacation toon, whether I go to the Bahamas, BVIs, Seychelles, San andres, Ambergris Cayes, Fiji, or some other tropical paradise. This song gets me away from the traffic and big city life in Dallas. Away from the crowds, the office buildings, and the stress of it all. I leave my business behind for some fun in the sun. Most opulently enriching song that calms your spirit and lets you get away from it all!
This tune takes me back to late October in New York City, just driving down Riverside Drive looking at the leaves, which were changing colors and my mind were at peace. Beautiful jazz pieces by the geniuses of Lonnie Liston Smith.
Back again. Need more Quiet Moments. Need to get out of the Dallas area again. Snarly traffic, crowds, heat waves, cement city, skyscrapers everywhere, and yuck, had enough! Ambergris Caye, on my way. My first stop there by golf cart, a night out on the pier at the Tiki Maya Bar & Grill with my girl for some nice drinks, fresh seafood, and a view overlooking the ocean on that pier. Sublime!
How sweet ! WJZZ Was the first 24 hour jazz station in America. Detroit City Clap your hands ! Not just a Rap , R&B , Gospel , Pop , Rock or Funk town .
I grew up in Metro Detroit, and WJZZ was one of the best Jazz stations in the nation. Bar none. So nice to see the decal again. Fantastic post. LLS is awesome.
That I do my friend. Oh how young we were. It was the summer of '78 me,my '76 Pontiac Grand Prix-SJ & my girl-friend(later my favorite ex-wife)riding out to dinner with the sun-roof open & listening to this song on D.C.'s own Original Quiet Storm WHUR 96.3FM.This is Progressive Jazz @ it's finest. Well now 35yrs. later; the car is gone, the girl long gone(thankfully);but the song remains just as fresh as ever.

Lonnie's soulful, elegantly understated style of playing is mesmerizing .
"Understated" is definitely the operative word here ...
