  • I replaced the spindles on my mower deck with 8ten brand spindles from Amazon. Since the housing on the old spindles were pretty much trashed I decided to disassemble them to see where the grease goes if you do grease them.

The grease also lubricates the steel tube spacer.

i'm doing my spindles now after 6 years of heavy use, husqvarna, the bearings are in great shape,[sealed] the housing snapped at the ears, the new bearings are sealed, i take off one side of the seal pack it with good bearing grease and put the seal back on, no need to grease ever, thats what a sealed bearing is for..this is just my opinion i am not a lawnmower mechanic, i do have a nice set of tools

Its always good to have a nice set of tools. I can't find most of mine when I need them. I've been thinking about the greasing deal and you know that vent hole just lets the grease out before you force it into the bearing where it needs to be. If you pull the seal and put in some good domestic grease you probably are way ahead of that "assembly" grease its manufactured with.

Why did you wait so long to grease them you better off to get new bearings In and make sure you gree to them. You've got to ta vision plastic. Put the bearing and take In grease them before you install them

@@user-pc2wo9vm2k I actually bought a dixie chopper with easily accessed greasable spindles. Bought it at 10 years old for $4500. Had a real nice Retro check in my pocket a couple years back.

I recently deleted an obtrusive comment. Not sure who the person thinks they are but bottom line is these spindles are meant to be run to failure and replaced. Just because you can modify them and force grease into them doesn't change the fact. It's like the long drawn out discussion about light truck universal joints (and other chassis parts) while there are those out there that prefer greasable units, sealed units work better for most because the greasable ones simple don't get serviced frequently enough. If you disagree with my video, go make your own video. Don't be rude keyboard warriors.

I raise mower like I'm changing blades and use a putty knife to clean under the deck..I don't use water at all.. it will make deck rust out because the paint under there gets worn off, chipped, and no longer protects from rust

The grease will get in the bearing even though it has a "seal". Been proven.

OK also I am a 69 year old woman with tools and I use them ,. I have built 3 decks 3 pergolas and a guest house that was supposed to be a shed but now guest house . My work not someone elses . I maintain my mowers and trimmers and put new flooring in my house last year along with trim work . But mowers are my nemesis . I can't get past this sealed garbage and unsealed garbage . zerk fittings and weep holes GEEZE WHAT NEXT

Sealed bearings have a rubber lipped seal, usually both sides to keep grease in and dirt out. While some can be removed abd repacked with fresh grease, typically with less expensive bearings you replace the entire bearing. The "weep" hole or vent allows communication with the atmosphere so tempersture changes don't cause pressure issues inside the unit. At 69 you should let someone else do it. (Can't work hard forever)
Any question I can answer? I was an engineer but you really need to be working in the industry rather than have a single semester long class.

Everyone knows they need to be greased. That's why they put the grease fittings.
There, so you can use them

I would prefer to grease all bearings. However, considering universal joints, the fact that feasible ones get beglected and sealed ones tend to last longer as a result.

Stupid --- keep the water out??? Pack the tower and when full the grease comes out of the over flow hole.

greased bearings that are sealed are the problem . Ifixit4U on youtube really explains it well

    • @thewayidoit8895
      @thewayidoit8895  Год назад

Well, as IFIXIT4U states, making greasable bearing will make them last the life of the mower. When is that? Could be when the deck bearing goes, could be the deck clutch failure, could be the engine blows up. My truck has sealed bearing in the front axle hubs and is headed to 400,000 miles. I don't think they have been changed. I will be changing them because I don't want them failing in February in a snowstorm. Most consumers would never grease a spindle. Autos had over a dozen Alemite fittings ( Yes that is the actual name- not a zerk -early version inventor- especially not a zert or greezezert ) Now on most cars/SUV s you cannot find even one. I think the problem is these sealed bearings oriented as they are end up being contaminated by water and dirt. They built them this way for at least 30 years or more and I doubt it will change.

I just changed spindles in newly bought -used yth18542. New spindle has a zerk on top and 1 bearing(open at top of it). I drilled vent hole in the old mandrel with the screw. Just in case. Will be observed.
