ChargePoint has a number of non-functional units out there. And for the most part, EV users are unaware they are broken until they pull up to charge. I now understand that many of these units are not owned by ChargePoint. But ChargePoint still gets the black eye when EV drivers are disappointed. If you are not going to take ownership of the user experience, it would be prudent to pro-actively label the individual ChargePoint units that you do own and actively support. Versus the ones that you have sold to a private entity who may have lost interest. Once a new public charger is installed, it shows up on multiple mapping programs. And stays there on the search sites for years, even after the station has died or been removed. It would seem that your corporate priority should be to fix and take over the failed ChargePoint stations. Or just remove them. These zombie stations are hurting your reputation.
Once again Kyle is AHEAD of the entire media industry on the important topics. These videos are SO good, you seem to nail it with the best guest. You are operating at light speed. oOs !
When I used the CCS adapter for a trip this past February, I used the CCS adapter on my Model Y several times. The only thing that gave me pause was the strain I put on my charge port from the weight of the adapter plus CCS cable.
Great interview, and yes I did certainly enjoy the previous Chargepoint factory tour video. There is no doubting the level of effort, ingenuity and focus on good product design and user friendliness at Chargepoint. The stockmarket waters are a bit choppy at the moment ... but I believe Chargepoint's ambition and perseverance will pay off.
Kyle, you may already be doing this, but I do think you need to start a consulting company advising on everything from vehicles to EVSE’s both A/C and D/C.
Great insight on the “underserved community” Kyle. While sitting in a parking lot near a Dollar Tree store, a family of five pulls up in an old LEAF, with a mix of wierd colors. In fact, with your first video on that older LEAF I started looking for one.
CT 4000 dual port level 2 charging stations need to have the option for one NACS cable and one J1772. Many small towns would benefit from the ability to support both type of connector.
Chademo is old, but if you are talking all the effort for old Tesla's, why leave Leaf stuck at Level2? FWIW my 2015 Leaf is only down 1 bar. I can make 60 Miles, but there needs to be dependable charging when I get there, because there is not a lot of room to find another location (if any). 4+ hours to L2 charge is not going to cut it.
Let's be sensible. 99.9 percent of Leaf owners charge exclusively at home. This means all of these ChadEMo connectors are rarely used. If an owner has one that is used (stations) it can stay.
@@graemeesmith yeah, no one is talking. Though Lectron has one up for pre-order now, which is a bit premature as no one has any idea how authentication at Superchargers is even going to work.
I love my ChargePoint home flex. I just wish it did load sharing with another flex. The only odd thing that happens with mine is that it randomly loses wi-fi connection. I have never figured out why. I have an access point sitting maybe 8 feet from it in my garage and it still loses connection.
I had the same issue with our CP intermittently losing WiFi connection. In recent months the issue has disappeared and it hasn’t happened for several months.
17:00 The question I've been waiting for... Older Tesla support is needed. Also does it plug & charge the Tesla account seamlessly? or you need to pay on the side? What about those Tesla's on free unlimited supercharging, will Tesla pay ChargePoint? so many edge cases.
I'd like to see older Tesla support also but I doubt that they can do it. Tesla uses the CAN bus to communicate with the Supercharger, CCS uses powerline Ethernet. V3 Superchargers and newer Tesla's handle both, V2s and older Tesla's are CAN bus only. Tesla promised an upgrade for older Tesla's but they haven't followed through. I contacted them through the app last week to ask about it and they had no information about when or even if it will become available. My guess about plug and charge is that you will need an account with each charger company. At some point maybe everyone will get together and hook their systems together so that you'll only need one account. Everybody except Tesla will want to make this happen sooner rather than later. Tesla is in the driver's seat because they own the dominate network and will benefit by making everyone get a Tesla account. Tesla will want everyone to have a Tesla account because it's a sales advantage for their cars not just their charging. The other operators get more benefit by having a frictionless charging experience then they will get from owning all the data about their customers. They will probably offer some sort of discount if you have an account with them, oil companies offer their own credit cards to generate loyalty so it makes sense for charging companies to do something similar.
Let me get this straight: Even though many DC stations will be adding NACS cables, those stations will still use the CCS protocol to talk with the car, so even though older Teslas have NACS ports, they will still need the upgrade to be CCS enabled to DC charge at the non-Tesla NACS DC stations? Just when I thought this would simplify the charing landscape.... sheesh! Try explaining that delightful quirk to a novice. I had a hard enough time recently explaining to a Model Y driver with the J1772 to NACS adapter why that adapter wouldn't allow him to charge at a Chargepoint DC station with the CCS connector - even though he could physically plug the charger (the 1772 portion) into his Tesla with the adapter.
It would be a lower cost to society overall to use the grants to fund Nissan swapping chademo on the cars themselves over to NACS, then to make every lot owner manage one obscure connector nobody uses.
no chance, first thing, EA is basically VW's punishment, they wont be allowed to offload it so easily, and secondly, I don't think chargepoint thas the money
I did hear somewhere that the older Teslas and the Tesla superchargers communicate in a manner similar to chademo if a charger is designed to understand chademo there should be a way to we work it to handle older Teslas. At the same time it should not be hard to make an adapter for Chademo vehicles to charge on NACS. we really do need an adapter. Charging companies should not be looking at this problem as Chademo cars are dwindling. These cars will be out there for a good while. If an adapter came out, there’s a good possibility that all Chademo owners will be jumping at the bit for this adapter. yes it seems like a niche but it really isn’t. There will be good business for this adapter. Also designing this adapter could also lead to an adapter that could be used overseas on CCS two.
I think, it will be NACS in the USA and CCS2 in Europe and rest of the World. Why USA always wanna / try to make the World differently ? You like adaptors ?
I understand that you like them. But they have the worst chargers in our state. More than 1/2 are under powered or not working. I have run into so many that says 6.5 kw but max is 5kw, also most of their 25kw units are broken unable to communicate. It's a real mess with them. I don't think they have the right model in selling the units to others. They should have taken real ownership of them.
Always great chatting with you Kyle, thanks for having us!

Absolutely right and on point. Exactly my experience with Chargepoint. Long dead or vandalized units still show up in a search.
Michael is on it. Knowledgeable, transparent, personable. He's a perfect fit for this audience.

Love how within 3 hours of this podcast being uploaded Kyle has to do another podcast to introduce Toyota/Lexus to the NACS connector.

Will the port on the cars be able to be changed over to nacs? So you never have to use an adapter?

Toyota announced Today they are switching to NACS.
Just went to Amazon and the NACS for the ChargePoint home flex is not available?

Good to hear. I wonder when the other CCS chargers will start to shift?
Will it communicate with the teslas to open the charge door

125kW max on a CPE 250 DCFC NACS. I can live with that.

Will ChargePoint design a similar “charger” or conversion kit as the Tesla Universal Wall Connector?
chademeau you either have to reimburse for old adapters or retro fit chademeau ports

Time too sell my Leaf
Yep.

The US tends to let the market decide the winner where Europe tends to regulate. Plus China has their own connector
Why is their version of NACS so ugly and such a distortion of the original design?
Because they know nothing
Just because you CAN do something doesnt mean you Should.
It’s the 1kV design that Tesla themselves published. Look it up.
