THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
It's always nice to see you guys come together. Such a good
gym bro friendship.
I think you're going to have a little bit of play no matter how good those guys build it. Just the nature of pushing all that weight up from below from a single point. Actually I think those guys are incredible for getting it that stable. The only other thing you could do would be to weld two more guild rails laterally, just above shoulder height.
My two favorite strongman athletes! Enjoy all the videos you two put together and I wish both of you all the best in whatever life brings you. I hope I can come to the event next year. I enjoy how you bring Nick in for testing to make sure everyone is safe and you both seem to have a good time together - reminds me of when my best friend and I hang out. God bless you both and your families and prayers always for all of you
I was at the strongest man on earth last year and it was one of the greatest trips of my life with some friends. Sad we can't go again this year but so hyped to watch it on livestream
I gotta make that happen one of these years.

Shaw and Trump 2024
I'm there supporting Shaw every year, and plan to always be there, and I live in Texas
I've just realised to top it off colorado is legal 😂😂😂
Did ypu see me lifting that really BIG thing in the bathroom area 😂
dave welding without any mask or face protection, absolute legend
Most welders do that, much quicker to just look away than constantly put your mask on and off
@@liamc7097quicker is not better. You're staring at the sun with welding. Both burns and permanent eye damage is possible, especially if it is your job.
Cheers brothers.
How will you keep them from bouncing it ?
I think that's what the pressure pads that they are standing on are for. He mentioned red lights and green lights. I think they set it up in a way that the pads they stand on measure the downward pressure of the athlete and the weight and if they bottom out completely, a red light will flash because they removed all the downward pressure of the apparatus, hence a "no lift" type situation.
1:36 “Sounds like retirement.” Goddamn savage Keri 🤣
Easy for her to say lmao, she hasn’t lifted the weights he has
@@Juliussmoothie don't be ridiculous about it. She is his wife and she has every right to crack a little joke with her husband. Don't bring your ego with someone you love.
Lol I know, right!
@@jai6954his efforts gave her the life she enjoys. Just realise that and then think about if she should be cracking jokes like that
@@Juliussmoothie what do you mean by "his efforts" . He is not a alone he got kids and wife, and I think you have no idea how tough is to handle a family kids if don't have a supportive caring partner which his wife is. You can't be on the top of your game if some bs is going on your family, you need someone to handle that. And that's where a wife or a caring person comes. She gave him the support so he can train freely without any tension of home. It's not like she is just a random person whom he hired for babycare. C'mon think like a mature person.
Even if Nick misses his flight, Brian can just throw him to his destination and keg toss the luggage 😂
I ♥ all of my White brothers and sisters.
Looks great but why no depth on those squats? Not even getting close to parallel
Gonna favor taller people if theres no adjustable height
Just me or is the range of motion kinda bad? I feel like it bottoms out way to quick
Agreed. Barely 90 degree leg angle.
I am no strongman, but know I can lift substantially more in that range than going a55-to-grass
I agree that it seems like a very short ROM.
Whats the difference between this and a smith machine? I dont see the point
This shit is a quarter squat💩And they call themselves "Strongman" 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
@@SnoW-pk9zo just visually more impressive. that's half of what strongman is. they could use calibrated weights for everything but a bunch of rocks looks cooler
Come on Brian ass to grass
That is one high squat
I certainly hope the depth is adjustable. Way too shallow on the video. Other than that, it looks amazing.
They can always step on a platform to get greater depth
It’s fine for strongman at Shaws height but you’ll get the occasional WSM competitor under 6ft. I guess they are at a big disadvantage for stones and whatnot so it tends to work out in the end.
It looks amazing, but the setup seems super high atm. Hopefully that can be adjusted so guys are getting close to depth
"I'll be eating alot of fuzzy tacos that weekend." 😂
For sure during the weekend.l is what he said. Either way, why is that funny?
lucky keri
@@skinlab4239I bet you’re fun at parties. Unless you are understanding the joke lol
That sounded so wrong.... Or right.... Whichever way u look at it hahaha
@@XxNeSsOxX1 there is no joke. I don't have time for parties. Businesses don't run when you are at parties All of the time.
Love when Nick is a part of the videos. He's such a stand-up guy.
Nick is a beast, all us 55yo want to be like him
Shouldn't you be able to squat deeper? Not that I lift and know what the hell I'm talking about, it just seems a bit above 90°. Maybe it's supposed to be that way? Impressive piece of equipment nevertheless.
It is high, even for strongman
Those extra guide rods was the right move. 8 total guide rods is needed for such a massive type smith machine.
What i would love to see is a "sword in a stone". Thought of this when i saw Eddie testing his maximum dead lift in the facility. Basically you would have a "sword" in a "stone" and its connected to a scale of some variety and the contestants just pull on it as hard as they can and see who has the biggest deadlift force.
plus after its used by the competitors you can put it out for the public to try
yes cool very cool idea!
Email him. I had emailed about a competition pull-down machine lift. The more ideas the better.
Or you could do some variation like with that grip event when they hold onto that grip attached to the massive ball for time, give the same aesthetic but just pull max weight and keep adding.
well I like either my "sword in the stone" idea because i think it'll be interesting to see what huge numbers these monsters get especially vs the public BUT I also like the idea of "real world" situations so its more relatable so i think there should be an event on seeing if you can carry all of the shopping/groceries from the car the fastest. Kind of like the farmers walk!
@@BH-rx3ue I think anything with animals is out of the question and too uncontrolable, but a rope pull against whatever type of strong animal would be glorious. You would have all the animal rights freaks twist their panties so tight, they would be pissing out of their ears. So that aside. Speaking of real world. I remember in my country in the 1980s they did 'how many bricks can you push against each other in a row and lift this row at chest height while clamping them together'. Big frame would help. Another one was holding super heavy fantasy swords stretched, as a shoulder challenge. But these are smaller weights. I have never seen swinging ungodly heavy hammers to smash things like they do at fun fairs. It would be interesting to see how heavy the hammers could get, before they can not use them in a full sledge hammer motion. I think hammers are visually sexy/appealing. I remember a training vid with Derek poundstone doing normal sledgehammer workout, that looked like a gorilla smashing shit and he got totally exhausted quickly from straight over head smashes
Hope the squat in comp is set for more depth.
That's crazy high.
Awesome apparatus but I really hope we will see squats at minimum 6" deeper.
I don't care about PL depth where giant rounded quads need to be flat in view, but at least parallel hamstrings, that's about a parallel squat anyway.
@a-a-rondavis9438 even powerlifting depth is far from full ROM. I really hope they get this event right. The last squat they had at the shaw classic was really bad. He needs this one to go well.
@@shawnmichaud4484 non equipped PL depth is always solid at big comps. It's usually quads parallel.
@@a-a-rondavis9438strongman depth standards are less strict but these were high even for strongman
@@a-a-rondavis9438Powerlifting Depth is hip crease below knee.
So will these be available at Planet Fitness soon?
they do come with built in lunk alarm
Yes, but caps at 75 lbs and immediately ejects you from the gym if you do it too easily.
😆
Probably, planet fitness doesn’t do freeweights just like Shaw
Depth definitely needs to be deeper, but looks excellent, good work.
What I was about to comment
This is sooo far from depth that it is just insane. But weights will be high
It will be extremely taxing regardless. This isn't powerlifting, you have 8 events total and 3 more events after the squat so you don't want to kill the athletes on the squat.
@@erebus79 mitch hoopers squat depth was a fucken joke.
I am a big fan of what Brian and team are doing with SMOE, but this event feels over engineered and maybe too many boxes to check (like how hard one can drop the weight - squat styles differ athlete to athlete).
Brian is a curious person when it comes to things we haven't thought of, like max output on lifts and stuff with force plates, but needing to calculate a drop on every rep seems a little too precise. Just tell them to lower under control, or have the refs count a rep off.
The more he talks about this event, the more I see of it the more against it I am
Honestly hoping it completely falls apart between competitors just so that he quits the over-engineered bs
I really don't know why he always has to overcomplicate all these events he comes up with. The athletes hated the car leg press with all the added BS they put into it
just finished the interview with thor and came straight to this video! the HYPE is insane!
I see Nick in the thumbnail, I click video, I enjoyed video, I like video. He's is literally the BEST buddy to test stuff because of his experience 😎🤘🏻
1. More diagonals!
2. Longer wheelbase on the slidingwheels 3ft instead of 1ft
3. More diagonals
Cross-bracing is the key, can add a lot of rigidity without adding too much weight.
just give them a box to sit on so you know they are al the way down to 90 degrees, no need to make it more complicated
Or do it like almost every other strongman competition ever
I hope for the comp the go deeper in the squat. It’s not fully parallel and wouldn’t count in any other comp.
So pumped for the SMOE. I will be there!
This isn't powerlifting bud.
Its still wrong to not even go parallel on squat and call it any form of real squat@@erebus79
@@erebus79 and that means nothing. As I said parallel is parallel. It wouldn’t count in in most people’s opinion bud
What will the standards for Squat depth be for the event?
I think they will adjust the bar pins for height of the athlete and try to maintain similar range of motion more than caring about depth. It's more like a smith machine squat with bottom pins in place. Should allow max pressing power without worry of bottom pause and balance fatigue.
If it’s anything like what was being done here, very shallow
Didn’t even hit parallel
Cool, but range of motion is horrible.
But they're not bodybuilder
@@laurareich4319bodybuilders don't go ATG quite as much as you think.
@@laurareich4319range of motion is horrible, even for strongman
@@dantethunderstone2118seems very adjustable, Nick didn’t go very deep but Brian’s was better. I’m sure they will get it right for the competition
@@Garrettismyname Brian was still pretty far from even strongman standards for squat
The way the force is being channeled through just two metal bars without bracing doesn't look right. That't why it's moving around like that.
Exactly. I was looking through the comments to see if anybody saw that. I'm shocked the fabrication shop doesn't see that. We would never design that area like that in our shop. There's a few other things working here that could have been done better also. The length of those bars will increase the leverage when there is force that is off the center line. It may possibly not slide as easily regardless of the bearings in the guide bars.

I'm surprised he didn't use a welder-faceshield, eyesight is very delicate.
@@Mirriam02 its easy you just close your eyes... but if you weld without helm for to many times you will begin to get sunburned a bit
Safety second
they were just tacks, all welders will at times tack without a hood, all welds are done with a hood
Fuzzy pink tacos are the best!!! 😂😂
It looks cool, but does it go low enough?
If they adjust the bar pins right, everyone should have a similar range of motion at least.
Next year squat live caged tigers 🐅
If we add more barrels that in turn, adds more weight… no kidding Brian…
Are the competitors allowed to "leg-press" it? Because you could pretty much let it rest at the bottom and then leg-press it back to the top.
Yes, it's more like a smith machine with bottom hooks in place than a conventional squat. I'm guessing more weight can be done overall as it's more like a standing leg press.
@@Demane69 Yeah exactly, like a standing leg press. Which I assume helps prevent injuries in case someone can't handle the weight after a while.
How about raising the foot plate, for shorter people and some more play overall ??! So you don't bottom out !
This is great, very excited to see all of these machines in competition! One thought: what about a decent thickness of rubber pad at the bottom on the squat rack? Watching the video, it seemed like hitting the bottom was a little harsh. Not enough rubber to cause a bounce, obviously, but just a bit maybe to cushion the jarring on neck, shoulders and hands.
The first verticle red tubing is too long. The lever arm length makes it easy to shake side to side/front back.
When & where can I get Nick's shirt? Thanks
Great video, only lacking Eddie and Oberst!
I wish I could watch it live but I'll be competing in Alabama's Strongest Man 😢
This apparatus looks as incredible as does horrifying
Mitch Hooper won by doing half reps. Craziness
So what's the total weight of the bar with the apparatus? I don't recall anyone mentioning it.
Love the apparatus build but I do feel like the squat is above parallel
Yeah it's a strongman squat it'll never be below parallel on an apparatus like this
I'm not worried about below parallel, but at least hamstrings parallel should be enough depth.
Strongman depth is parallel (hip join in line with knee joint)
This wasn’t even close
@@dantethunderstone2118 This was testing by two older, retired lifters. They'll be setting the depth for each SMOE athlete individually. I'm sure it'll be closer to parallel. But if you go back at basically any squat event at WSM or the Arnold, they're never deep squats
@@xDeathBySpikesx that’s because the depth standard for a squat in strongman is parallel, this wasn’t even closer to parallel
How have you not been on JRE , smh
Leave it to Brian Shaw to make smith machine squatting look so cool with the worlds largest one 💪🤣👍
...Chalk for gripping a squat bar? Seriously?
Seems a bit over engineered to be honest. I’m sure it will be a great event anyway
Brian vs Nick in a arm wrestling match 💪
BRIAN WE LOVE U MAN,,,❤GREETINGS FROM UKRAINE❤❤❤
I love seeing a video with Nick where he isn't getting harassed by Eddie or Robert!
I'm afraid the squat sensor may add some unnecessary confusion. I understand wanting them to use control and not momentum so it'll be interesting if they can set it up properly
Of course it will, this is massively over engineered
A combo rack, a barbell, some giant globes instead of weight plates is all that’s needed for a squat in strongman
Overcomplicated is kinda Brian's whole thing
@@beardedbjorn5520 and it goes against the spirit of strongman
It looks like it stops before hitting good squat depth
Wow 54 seconds ago lets gooo
Looks like you'll need some different height stands for the shorter guys to standing or they won't be able to hit depth.
*update* nvm, just noticed it looks like the whole floor is attached to a winch and is able to be raised and lowered so that solves that problem
Hope that “pot herb” isn’t turning up 😂
1:37 "...and I took that personally"
Come on x5 WSM. >.>

Never get full of fuzzy tacos lol
Not a single rep was done that day! Just kidding don't know the first thing about strongman stuff
You’re right, even in strongman the depth standard is deeper than that
In powerlifting you have to break parallel, in strongman you just have to reach parallel. In this video there was no parallel
It looks like it doesn't go deep enough
Even for strongman this ROM is a joke.
It's always a good time with any of the big four around lol
SMOE is the best strongman event!!!!
how can this thing distribute the weight evenly on both sides?
Like squatting in a giant Smith machine!
Is that shirt that Nick is wearing in this video available to buy? I couldn’t find it on the website. It’s really great. Keep up the great work.
Why is the music so loud and the voices so quiet?
I have to change the volume for a while.
Please optimize this.
Deal with it dork dingus
Red Iron and you are definitely "raising the bar" with this and the keg toss builds! Can't wait to watch!
You guys are crazy…..love it.
Iffy depth IMO.
The ultimate strongman squat machine is a rack, a couple j cups, a barbell(ideally cambered) and a bunch of weight
Not whatever this bs is
Built for show for sure. Not hitting full depth at a show like SMOE isn't really impressive.
I was watching season 2 of Alone and I could not place who Nicole reminded me of. It just struck me that it's Keri Shaw! I wonder if they're any relation.
I can´t imagine anyone better to dial equipment in, then you gentlemen. I´d love to see these kinds of videos, for the other eqipment. 1:36 Keri being savage today😂🥰
Is the event gonna be streamed or recorded and uploaded here on RUclips, or other places on the web, if so, where? I´m in Denmark, and got no chance of attending.

Looks like a slipped disc waiting to happen. Too unstable with that kind of weight on your back. Good luck everyone!
From an engineering standpoint, would suggest adding extra material on the front and back side of the long vertical square tube that connects to the bar. That'll increase the section modulus / resistance to bending in that direction, and that appears to be where you have a bit of wobble left. Or, alternatively, switch from a square section to a rectangular section for those parts. Side to side it should be strong enough already since they are tied together top and bottom. Aside from that it looks awesome!
From a strongman standpoint, would suggest removing most of the material and doing a free weight squat
Are they accounting for Brian's height in having that thing bottom out?? Shorter guys will bottom out at like 80% of the rep.
No stone unturned, pulling out all the stops. Sounds safe to me. Can't wait to see this bad boy in competition. Always good to see America's brother Nick up to the task. See you next time, men.
The one thing I think about here, is if the machine allows the smaller guys to get low enough for it to be a real squat. Maybe you can fix that with adjustable podium or something.
😂😂😂
It bottoms out way too early tbh for brian and his depth is still bad lol.geez so is nicks. Neither of these guys can reach bare minimum powerlifting depth as its built right now
💪🙂🎉
SMOE > WSM
The biggest smith machine
Brian quick safety note, the way they clip those winches at the end of the set looks really risky and could lose a finger. Hundreds of pounds and someone is putting there fingers that close to a clip. Should be a big ol handle like the squat racks with the hooks that can be released
Too high
The scales and lights and dropping it hard at the bottom of the squat haven’t been explained very well.
Worried that given it wasn’t mentioned the depth isn’t adjustable as that is way off what you’d expect.
It's a good thing for other's that Brian wont participate, he would win no question.
The goat 😎💪🏻
Your going to be eating a lot of fuzzy tacos.... I recommend you tell them to but a razor or two!!!!!!!!!!
With the whole pressure thing, this squat looks suited to controlled reps anyway so hopefully not many reps are voided
What happens if someone collapses with Max weight on the machine? Can it withstand the impact of a full weight drop from standing height?
Just thinking: Will the safety height be adjusted for each athlete, given that a taller athlete would have to squat deeper, leading to a bit of an unfair advantage for shorter athletes - if the safety height is fixed?
