Hi, Xevi, big fan here, but the story is a bit trickier. I'm from Rio de Janeiro, and the whole Lochte case was kinda wild. Basically he and his boys did fuck up the bathroom - Brazilian media went to the gas station and found that they did break shit, but not a lot - and the money paid was to the security guard of the gas station for repairs. Local media even got testimony from the guy helping translate the whole thing and the cab drivers. Lochte's buddies were detained because false testimony is a misdemeanor here in Brazil, even if you're saying shit to the media. Imagine some white dude came into your city and claimed he got robbed at gun point by the police, thinking people wouldn't think too much about it because "Hey, it's a third world country. We've all seen Fast Five."
@@error8119 The judge didn't admit anything of the sort. In fact, every single eyewitness, including the cab driver, corroborated the gas station's staff account of what happened. The case never went forward because Lochte refused to return to Brazil for an official deposition. His buddies just confessed, got a slap on the wrist and went back home.
@@error8119 The thing was, he told the press he was robbed. Prosecutors saw this as false testimony, because a press statement can be viewed as entering something into the record. The other swimmers confessed to the vandalism, said they didn't get robbed and were let go with a warning after being detained by the police at the airport trying to flee the country. Lochte got away and went back to the US to do damage control. The judge asked Lochte to give an official deposition to ascertain his side of the story and be done with this nonsense that he created. He refused and his lawyers stonewalled Brazilian authorities for four years until the statute of limitations ran out in 2020. I read about this situation a few weeks ago and it's been playing in my head ever sense. It made me embarrassed to think about all those times in my past where the truth was crazier than any coverup story I could come up with, and so I did the "logical" thing and told a coverup story assuming people would just accept it and move on... most of the time this works, but every so often people start questioning things, you're now spinning this web of lies, reality and fiction are blurring as weeks go by and you spend each day explaining things to people and preparing more stories and explanations for your next encounter with people, daydreaming about a future event where you finally get to say "hey guys, I finally gotta fess up, I messed up and this is what actually happened... I told this other story for the dumb reason that I didn't think anybody would believe me, but ironically had to dupe people into believing something that wasn't true in order to cover up an innocent event that was actually true"... but in all my life, you never get that chance to say that to anyone. Instead years and decades go by where people either move on and it would be weird to reach out to them just to give this weird explanation, or you talk yourself out of it because "what if they think this, too, is just part of the lie and I'm trying to convince them? Maybe it's better to say nothing still...."
Worklife especially has this all of the time. The amount of times I've taken blame for something as a joke (thinking nobody's dumb enough to think I actually did this, or that they know me enough to see I'm doing a bit), or to be nice to someone (take the heat off of them when they're dealing with a lot of things), or because they're my superior, etc... Or you misunderstand someone's question to how X happened, and don't realize until after you've given an explanation, but then when you try to correct yourself they suddenly think you're covering something up and won't believe you, so now you *do* have to make up stories to explain stuff that never even happened only because they're not believing you that you simply mistook them the first time.... I'm convinced that everyone's perception of each other at work is based on strings of accidental lies that they've had to memorize and hold up for their entire career.
imagine you exaggerate a story a lil bit, come out to fully explain yourself the right way, get proven right, and ppl still dislike you because they think you lied😭
