It was based on a Doctor Who book featuring the 7th doctor from our “dark ages” (we call it the wilderness years) of the show when we thought Doctor Who was gone. Here is the full transcript of what David Tennant said in the video to Martha - it was mostly time-filler since they knew it would be fast-forwarded, but as such it's entertaining as it's Tennant riffing to make it look like real content:
This working? Martha, before I change, here's a list of instructions for when I'm human.
One, don't let me hurt anyone. We can't have that, but you know what humans are like.
Two, don't worry about the Tardis. I'll put it on emergency power so they can't detect it. Just let it hide away.
Four. No, wait a minute, three. No getting involved in big historical events.
Four, you. Don't let me abandon you.
And five. Very important, five. Don't let me eat pears. I hate pears.
John Smith is a character I made up, but I won't know that. I'll think I am him, and he might do something stupid like eat a pear. In three months, I don't want to wake up and be human and taste that. And six. Now I have to talk for around about a minute without hesitation, deviation, or whatever the other thing is. It's like that panel game on Channel Four, like Rory just pointed out. However, I'm going to move on and say number seven, and talk about my other favourite band, which is the Housemartins. I don't know if anyone remembers the Housemartins, but the best gig I ever went to was at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in about December, it must have been 1990, and the Housemartins were playing, and it was quite simply the best gig I've ever been to. They split up quite soon afterwards; I don't know what that tells you about that particular event. I'm sitting in the TARDIS now, and I'm going to wind up soon, but not before I make a few strange noises with my mouth that will go somewhere along the lines of bingle bongle dingle dangle yikkety-doo yikkety-dah ping pong lippy tuppy too tah.
And twenty-three. If anything goes wrong, if they find us, Martha, then you know what to do. Open the watch. Everything I am is kept safe in there.
Now, I've put a perception filter on it so the human me won't think anything of it. To him, it's just a watch. But don't open it unless you have to. Because once it's open, then the Family will be able to find me. It's all down to you, Martha. Your choice. Oh, and thank you.

I believe the captain's husband was working on the ram scoop's system and that was where/when the transfer occurred.

Respect for whoever stuck the Spaced DVD cover into the edit there. Absolutely seminal bit of work, and vastly under appreciated on RUclips, despite it being the start of collab between Pegg, Frost, Wright and Park. Also, you're not wrong about this being a lovely story - it's based on a DW Novel written a decade or so earlier by friends in the fandom, and it was one of the best novels in the series when it was written too. This adaptation does it justice.

I still refer to Harry Lloyd as Brother Mine when I'm talking to my family. This was the first place I saw him.
The video already showed that you know he is Viktor in Arcane, but he was also in Game of Thrones, BBC's Robin Hood and Counterpart.

Nearly 25 years ago, Jessica Hynes (Nurse Redfern's actress) co-starred and co-wrote a little Britcom called Spaced. Her writing partner and co-star was a theater pal by the name of Simon Pegg. Their director was a guy named Edgar Wright. Nick Frost also co-starred, having had little acting experience before this point. She may not have risen to the same renown as her collaborators, but she's extremely talented in her own right.

This story was filmed in South Wales in St Fagans. Its actually basically a museum of wales. Fun fact: the dance hall at the end of this episode is actually on the second floor of the building. Knowing that made the scarecrow jumping at Tim through the window made it even creepier

I'll cop to underrating her because I didn't like her pinning for the Doctor story. But even if I don't like the material they gave her, she played it brilliantly.

@lant7123 I get that. I just needed a bit of a palette cleanser after Rose. If you'd flipped the order of Martha and Donna I might have appreciated Martha's story more at the time. These days with distance I can appreciate more what they were doing with Martha's story.

There is a quick line at the start - that the family only have a short time to live - so he only has to hide for a short time. That's why Martha thinks it will all be over in a month.

So... just a fun fact that really relates to me more than anything. After the original series and before this "new" series, there was an attempt to revive Doctor Who in America. They made a pilot movie starring Paul McGann as the 8th Doctor. The film even started with the 7th Doctor and had him "die" to regenerate into 8. While the movie was not fantastic, Paul McGann was incredible as the Doctor. A portion of the fandom REFUSED to acknowledge him as being an official Doctor and that just made me a bigger fan of McGann.
Paul McGann did continue on as The Doctor in audio form (as did other Doctor actors), but the "New" Doctor Who show had not done much to talk much about the old show (aside from the return of some class Doctor Who villains).
THIS EPISODE was the first episode to show images of the Doctors from the old series and what made me giddy with delight was the center and largest image in The Doctor's book of memories was an image of Paul McGann... cementing him even further as officially being part of the Doctor Who legacy.
Anyway... that's one additional reason why this episode means a lot to me!

This is an example of some of the best episodes of NuWho. And note; so far as producing it, it's remarkably simplistic, carried by good costumes and fantastic acting. It's like classic Doctor Who in that sense.
