- Sir Sydney Camm, CBE, FRAeS (5 August 1893 - 12 March 1966) was an English aeronautical engineer who contributed to many Hawker aircraft designs, from the biplanes of the 1920s to jet fighters. One particularly notable aircraft he designed was the Hawker Hurricane fighter.

People forget what these brave men and women did for us in two world wars
This should be good, Sir Sydney Camm was born on the same road I lived on, Alma Road in Windsor, his was 10, near the railway viaduct, my family home was in the 60's opposite the Catholic Church, and he went to the Royal Free School in Bachelor's Acre as did my dad, only many years later.
Without sir Sydney Camm and sir Frank whittle lots of people who have lived their lives since last wars .have a lot to thank them for
Paul, Paul - I cannot you enough for this video. Sir S was one of my heroes. The Hurricane WON the BOB. Sydney did so much for our Country.
Sorry mate that should have been 'THANK' you enough. Please keep on with these videos - much needed!
An absolute legend of a man, up there with the greats, thank you Paul a great video full of info and for 30 minutes bringing back to life (almost) an often forgotten hero. My two military aircraft were the Tornado ( when not broken😂) and then the GR5 Harrier, an unbelievable aircraft. Thanks again, one of the best videos so far 👍😊
Thank you Alan, that means a lot coming from a gentleman with your background. 🙏
Skip, great channel, telling the rest of the crew now lol, owe you a beer🍺
@@ChrisHendy-kd1vrlinked you in to my account so you can catch up on previous👍
@@UnusualThings1anytime Paul, we’ve all put a shift in for king and country lol, now it’s passengers and lost luggage lol, stay safe😁
Thanks!
Wow thank you so much David 🙏
@@UnusualThings1 thank you for what you do Paul ...,you rock .
Very kind and appreciated 🙏
New to the channel, just had my skipper tell me to tune in!lol, really good video, looking forward to seeing the next one
Hope you enjoy! 🙏
Another well deserved mention of another clever man. I had never heard of him not being up on all war history but I am glad you have shone the spotlight on this great man. So many that never get mentioned. Thank you Paul.
We certainly do owe this genius a huge debt. Without his expertise and determination, this country would have struggled to defend itself. Aviation as an industry should treat him as a giant, with all the development he designed. Such a modest headstone too. Thanks Paul, he really should be treated as a hero. 🙂
Thank you Alan. Im a huge fan of aircraft and love the Hurricane, actually responsible for twice as many kills as the more famous Spitfire in that critical Battle of Britain. Had the R.A.F lost,Hitler would have started Operation Sealion and the invasion of Britain. How long would the war have continued, would Britain have been over-run as the rest of Europe,Operation Overlord aka D-Day would be launched 4 years later from a free England. The successful Desert campaigns of 1942 with Monthy and the 8th army where the Hurricane had proved a worthy fighter-bomber broke Germanys armoured back giving them a much needed ground defeat and push back so on and so forth. All this hinged on winning the Battle of Britain in 1940. Although many brave pilots took parts in numerous aircraft,Sir Sydney Camms fighter largely took the battle to the Luftwaffe. One young lad making model aircraft and venturing a touch of business acumen may have literally saved the country with his Hurricane design. No mean feat. Some acorns grow not into trees but forests. What a shame his house was demolished and not used as a museum. We learn more of R.J.Mitchell and the Spitfire, which is understandable with its glamour, but it's great you have filmed a salute to a brilliant designer that was Sir Sidney Camm. Nice one Alan, looking forward to seeing you in the USA. It will happen buddy, because you planted a good acorn or two yourself. Keep punching brother :-) (PS Folks to see real flying surviving aircraft of WW2 take a visit to Duxford airshows in the summer or Sywell Park plus visit Hendon and see Mr.Camms actual designs)
Yes the hurricane had more kills, it took up 2/3’ds of fighter command! Let’s not get into the whole Spit hurricane nonsense, they were both outstanding aircraft in their on right. As Alex Henshaw said, had we no Spitfires and only Hurricanes, we would have lost…..if we only had Spitfires we would have still won.
Nice n we all should thank this man paul
Lovely video Paul …Our service veterans need to be remembered….beautiful cemetery… very tranquil…Thankyou X💞
Recently watched the film Battle of Britain. Such a classic. Do take an interest in RAF WWII history as my 2nd cousin (aged 22) Ed Budd died in March 1945 during a mission in Italy. He died in the Adriatic Sea on the way back. Just month's previously he'd saved the lives of his crew during another mission; and he was praised as being a brave man by his CO in the letter sent to 'Ted's' mum.
Anyway, another great video. They're pretty addictive to watch but in a good way:--)
I'm a big aviation fan. My dad worked for Dehavalands, sorry can't spell it, at Leavesden, now the Harry Potter exhibition centre. I'll be at RIATthis year again to watch the modern Typhoon ripping up the sky. Thanks Paul.
Yes I'm just around the corner too. I do miss the sight of the regular privately owned spitfire flying overhead. Can't even fly a drone over there now.😂
My father also worked there.😊
Smashing video Paul thoroughly loved this one! We have spitfires and the odd hurricane buzz my rooftop most days, the sound of that merlin engine gives me goosebumps! We owe so much to Sir Sydney Camm and Mr Mitchell Wonderful! Thanks Paul 🤗 Xxx
You lucky person!
Yes indeed Andrew. Im just outside capel le ferne in south east Kent where the battle of britain memorial is, so we get them most days!@@andrewchoffin7552
Sorry for missing you video on Sunday 😔 what an am amazing man and what he did for this country love the spitfire its incredible too see when it's in the air rip Sir Sydney camm ❤ ❤
No worries Helen, family and life always comes first. I appreciate you moding for the channel.
He's one of my heroes.
.
The Spitfire got all the glory yet the Hurricane was made in greater numbers and had more victories.
The tank buster with underwing cannons tore through trains, tanks and other armour.
We owe so much to him.
As a model maker, I'm scratch building a version he designed but never got built due to the end of WWII, the Hurricane Mk14.
The Hurricane was not made in greater numbers. (There were more Hurricanes at the time of the Battle of Britain, because they were introduced sooner, but far more Spitfires were made and they were in production much longer.)
Hi Paul. VERY interesting. I learnt a lot! Cheers, Bob
If it wasn't for his genius, we would all be speaking German without the freedom we,sadly, take for granted. Thanks Paul for this superb tribute
Great video paul he was brave man see next video paul cool 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Rest in peace sir Sydney Camm and his wife too! 😇🙏 Hello Paul looking forward to the next video!!!!
Rest in peace 🙏 Sir your contribution was second to non now at peace😢
Great video Paul mate .. some great history shared with us all .. often these important people that changed our history get forgotten
Cheers bud 🙏
Good evening Paul, this episode was better then last week. The sound was better.
Absolutely fantastic Paul. I'm so glad you did this story. The Hurricane is the plane that won the Battle of Britain, as the Spitfire only came at the end of the battle.
Sir Sydney Camm is a amazing man & with the amount of subscribers you have, to me. You would get his story out further afield. Thank you muchly & Top Job mate. 👏👏👏
Actually the Spitfire was available from 1938 onwards, but didn't equip as many squadrons during the Battle of Britain. Sorry to be so pedantic my friend
@@alistairjohnson662 A total of 1,715 Hawker Hurricanes flew with Fighter Command during the period of the Battle of Britain, far in excess of all other British fighters combined. It is estimated that Hawker Hurricane pilots were credited with four fifths of all enemy aircraft destroyed in that critical period from July to October 1940.
The Battle of Britain took place between 10 July and 31 October 1940. The Royal Air Force had nearly 2,000 aircraft of which around 370 were Spitfires. A total of 529 enemy aircraft were shot down by Spitfires during the battle. Illustration of Vickers Supermarine Spitfire LF.
@spitfirekev So you're now saying that Spitfires DID participate in the battle from the start? I'm pleased that mistake has been cleared up now. Thanks
@@alistairjohnson662 your welcome. But it still was the Hurricane who won the Battle of Britain. Including the famous 303 Squadron who had more kills than any other Squadron in Hurricanes.
Cannot wait thanks Paul hope your ok and well mate 👍
I'm ashamed to admit I had never heard of Sir Sidney Camm. Thanks for the video.
Nice one mate ❤.
Sydney Cam's development t of the Hurricane saved us in WW2, the Spitfire took the glory but there were a lot more Hurricanes out there, and boy, could they absorb some punishment. Nice tribute
Thanks Paul for another great video 😊
great video
What wonderful plane of ther day full history amazing dint not lot about these thank for sharing this😊
Aviation has been in my blood from an early age, so thank-you for bringing us this fascinating story about a man who's endeavours turned the tide of history.
I can not wait to see this episode
Hi Paul,
I clicked the notification so FAST lol, looking forward to hearing about this gentleman Sir Sydney Camm 👍 your amazing keeping these historical peoples memories alive ❤️ God bless him what a pioneer.
Another intresting man from our history where if he had not designed the aircraft he had things could have been very different , thanks Paul enjoyed this one.
Another brilliant video Paul. Having flown the Hurricane and the Spitfire I found the Hurricane was easier to fly she was bit sluggish but lovely to fly. More Hurricanes shot down more Luftwaffe aircraft durning the Battle of Britain than the Spitfire. Hurricanes were also easier to repair than the Spitfire due to the fabric and tube design in the rear fuselage.
Just settling down to watch now with hubby, sorry we missed the live bit. I've got my husband hooked on watching your videos now Paul. Your fan base is growing. :) We really enjoy what you do. Looks like another road trip for us.
Thank you 🙏
Looking forward to seeing this one
Will be great
Thank you for a very interesting video , my dad was in the air force flying planes in the war, so grateful for men like Sir Sydney Camm for keeping my dad safe with his great design. Lovely cemetery I love these small cemeteries such a beautiful and peaceful location
Great one Paul, it’s a pity that this fine aircraft never gets the recognition that the spitfire always gets
Thank you Paul for another fantastic video and long may they continue
Loved this video Paul, the man was a genius, the Hawker Hurricane was a brilliant design and though overshadowed by the Spitfire I believe downed more enemy Aircraft in WW2. Keep up the good work 👍😎!!!!!!
That opening shot has got to be the best thing you've ever uploaded. The hurricane is every bit as beautiful as the spitfire and the sound is an angel that's just got it's first BSA 750.
Another interesting video Paul (as usual). It is really good to hear about guys like Sir Sydney Camm, and his contribution to British history. Thank you for uploading).
Hi Paul liked the video looking forward to the next one 👋👍👌
Thank you Paul as always I very much enjoyed this one.
Watching on replay. Iv been in Blackpool for the weekend so just catching up
Excellent Paul, very interesting man, we owe him a lot, thank you xx
Another great and interesting video has always Paul 👍
An excellent video Paul
Well presented and informative
Well done
A prayer for those very brave men 🙏🏻
Excellent, Paul. Sydney Camm’s Hawker Hurricane was a fabulous fighter plane and shot down many enemy bombers as well as fighters. The glory seemed to go to R J Mitchell’s Supermarine Spitfire aircraft, but the contribution of both Spitfires and Hurricanes was immense
Very Interesting!
Looking forward to video. Another grave to visit hopefully
Thanks Paul. Always interesting videos
I must confess, I have never heard of Sydney Camm until this eveing.I loved the very informative vlog I was particularly interested to learn that he was difficult to work with. That brought him moe "alive" and human. I expected his headstone to be more "flashy" with more information on it. Perhaos it's simplicity, shows " humbleness."
Brilliant Man and the Hurricane Brilliant Aircraft
Aircraft has always interested me. My ex husband worked at British aerospace in Woodford Cheshire. He was an aeronautical electrical functions engineer. He worked on the nimrod during the Falklands war. Very interesting video thanks for sharing love from Holmfirth west Yorkshire and 💜🫰
Brilliant video as always thank you
Another interesting video Paul lovely gravesite ❤️😊
Another great fascinating video Paul. All the best from Wayne in Stoke 👍

Hi Paul, very interesting man. Take care and stay safe till next time. ❤
How about Roy Chadwick?👍 And before I forget, R J Mitchell.
Another great video mate.
Hi Paul, considering you are discussing the late Sidney Camm, your thump picture of this vlog is of a Spitfire designed by Mitchell. The plane you should have shown should have been the Hawker Hurricane which he designed.
Yeh was in a rush to do thumbnail had to get out for a 10k race this morning.been changed now.
Hi Paul. Another great video.
Prayers 🤲
Thanks 🙏
The opening shot of MK1 Hurricane R4118 (G-HUPW) was taken at a private airstrip in the village I used to live in, North Moreton Oxfordshire.
Camm was a absolute Genius ❤
Thanks for that paul really interesting, we were so lucky we had engineering geniuses like this otherwise we might not have won it
Thanks Paul for a very informative video I haven't heard of Sydney camm but I know of the hurricane you just don't think who invent these wonderful planes but with your video I know who designed this plane now thanks Paul 👍👍
I haven’t heard of this person before, but wow he’s really interesting and what he did for us back at the Second World War.
I'm a Scot living in Seattle Paul ,it would be great to see you do a video from here . Ironically, this from the home of Boeing. Take care Buddy.
Would love it if you could visit the national arboretum in alrewas Staffordshire one day. It’s an extremely emotional place
Reginald Mitchell next ? Nice vid.
Paul RJ Mitchell, inventor of the spitfire, is at South stoneham Cemetery Southampton. From Julie in Kent.
Another Great Britain we owe so much too👍
Never heard of him, really interesting video.
MY FATHER WAS A CHIEF TECHIAN IN THE R A F FOR 27 YEARS AND MY DAD WORKS WITH AMERICANS AND KNOW HE WORKS ON TOP SECRET THINGS MY FATHER WOULD A 102 THIS YEAR PAUL TAKE CARE
Hi Paul it's Gemma Dickinson
Hi Paul, love what you do.. Any chance you could do one on RJ Mitchell please, and the father of the engines that powered the majority of British warbirds, Sir Henry Royce.. many thanks..
💔🙏
My preference for the job is "aeronautical architect". --Bob Bailey in Maine, USA
A guy who lives near to me has one (may be a replica) and a couple of spitfires xx
May he RIP🌹
Great video as usual really enjoyed it but please change that title to 'designer' from 'inventor'....
❤❤❤❤❤🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Have you thought of doing about roy chadwick, the designer of the lancaster bomber.
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Further comment, the Spitfire gets a lot of glory, but the workhorse was the Hurricane.
I think we sent email and pictures of the guy that was on the titanic.
His grave stone is a big white one in the churchyard.
I’ve just confirmed it with her
Five mins from my other half.
We pretty sure that there is someone buried at the church near there, who may have been on titanic
