I'm no expert in feline psychology so I can't say for certain whether or not they genuinely give a shit but they always find a way to act like they don't. Hell, Stray even got their durability absolutely spot on; that cat gets thrown around a fair bit through the game and yet always manages to walk off pretty much anything bad that happens to it. I guess cats, being so accident prone, just evolved over time to develop old school Nokia grade armour.

They tried sedating them, but if the sedative wore off too quickly the bats would fly too far away. And if the sedative wore off too late they would just smash in to the ground and die. Before they could figure that out the nuke was invented which kind of made the whole thing pointless. Someone also tried to create the world's most stinky substance to use as a weapon. The plan was to smear german soldiers with it by using infiltrators to demoralize the germans. By the time he had perfected it the war ended so close afterwards that he never got to see anyone use it.
