I hope you enjoyed my reaction to The Frighteners! This movie blew me away and it was exciting to see Peter Jackson direct something that was not LOTR! Let me know what you think of this movie and as always, have a good day!! :)
I love this movie. But if you also enjoyed it, then I can recommend a couple of Peter Jackson's other films like "Dead Alive" and "Heavenly Creatures".
The FBI agent is played by Jeffrey Combs. He's been in other horror films. Mostly "weird" ones. I would say non-traditional. He's also been in so-bad-theyre-good movies. If you wanted to see the films I associate him with, Re-Animator from 1985 and From Beyond - 1986. Also the end credits song is a cover of a famous song called Don't Fear The Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult.
Nina Kulagina was a real person and the story the FBI agent tells about her stopping the frog’s heart is true. The Russian government held her under observation performing experiments on her til she died.
I'm so glad you're getting to this gem. I wish more people would see it. Not only a fresh-take of a movie, I seriously think this is Michael J. Fox's best performance, hands down.
This was pitched by Jackson to Back to the Future writers Bob Zemeckis and Bob Gale as another Tales of the Crypt movie, as they had the rights to the 50's EC horror comics and were doing the TV show and producing the movie spin-offs, but while they liked the idea, they decided to produce this as a stand-alone movie, without the Tales ftC title. Jeffrey Combs, who played the creepy FBI Agent, also played the creepy doctor Herbert West, who tries to find the key to immortality in Stuart Gordon's and Brian Yuzna's Re-Animator trilogy of splatter comedies. Re-animator movies, Evil Dead movies, Romero's zombie movies and King Kong were major influences for Jackson in his early career, when he was mixing comedy and horror. Gordon and Yuzna, best known for their horror films, also wrote the story to Disney comedy Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, starring Rick Moranis.
The old man who played "The Judge" is John Astin. He was Gomez Addams in the old B&W TV show of the Addams Family. His stories of making this movie convinced his son to get a job in The Lord of the Rings. That's Sean Astin who played Samwise Gamgee.
Such a great thrill ride of a movie that zigzags from horror to comedy to straight-up slasher flick. Glad that you got a chance to experience it. Biggest surprise for me as a kid watching this was seeing the mom from E.T. (Dee Wallace) go full blown psycho killer here. Also, yes, that closing cover of "Don't Fear The Reaper" by the Mutton Birds is eerily addictive.
This has always been a favourite of mine and it doesn’t get the love it deserves. That closing song is Don’t fear the Reaper by the New Zealand band The Meat Puppets. One of Peter Jackson’s fave bands. It’s actually a cover of the 1976 Hit by Blue Oyster Cult.
Fun Fact: The Judge was played by John Astin (Gomez Addams from the b&w tv series); check it out. Also, he is the father of Sean Astin ( Samwise “Sam” Gamgee of the Lord of the Rings). This means that Jackson got to work with 2/3 of this iconic family. All he needed was the wonderful Patty Duke (Check out The Patty Duke Show).
"It's like if the kid from the Sixth Sense grew up..." Basically the plot of Doctor Sleep, only it's the kid from the Shinning. I hope you react to both. :)
Awesome reaction dude! This is like one of my favorite horror movies and I LOVED the character of Milton Dammers! Jeffrey Combs did a amazing job with that character!
An underrated gem from the past. Another one you might want to check out. Midnight Run with Robert DeNiro. His best movie IMHO. Hilarious action/comedy.
I love this movie, but it made me feel weird and sad and anxious the first time I saw it. It got better upon re-watch. Big Trini fan ever since Times Square in 1980. Glad you liked it. Fun reaction.
Critics hated it, Siskel and Ebert if you remember them were big at the time and gave it a 2 thumbs down, it didn't do well at the box office either i believe. I saw it when it came out and loved it
@@RolyPolyOllieReactions people struggled with the tone of it i think, some people wish it leaned more horror, others wished it leaned more comedy. for some reason horror-comedies get criticised for tonal whiplash and "not knowing what it's trying to be" even though it's clearly a horror-comedy, lol. granted it's a tricky genre mix to pull off well, but the frighteners definitely did and there are plenty of great examples these days (shaun of the dead, tucker & dale vs evil, what we do in the shadows, etc)
This movie holds up so well. LOVE IT! Another great Michael J Fox movie that is a divergent from his usual roles is a film he did with James Woods called THE HARD WAY. I suggest you watch it.
Such an underrated movie. An eccentric classic in my mind. Just out of curiosity, how far down is "Yellowbeard" on the list? I don't care if it's ten movies away or something. Yellowbeard is very eccentric like this movie and I'm looking forward to your reaction. Again, make sure that you have subtitles on because of the British accents are mostly just above mumbling.
I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that 1996 was 25 years ago! It seems like only yesterday I walked into the theater to see this. I knew nothing about it, except that Michael J. Fox was in it. I was really impressed with the movie & remember telling people to see go see it. I don’t think I had much effect because, as far as I remember, it didn’t do all that well.
About Zemeckis and horror... Writers of Back to the Future trilogy, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, teamed up with producer Joel Silver (Commando, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Matrix) and bought the rights to legendary 50's anthology horror comic Tales From The Crypt. They adapted the comics into TV show, hosted by the ghoulish Crypt Keeper (portrayed by a puppet) why made an opening pun and introduction to each story. They also did a couple of movies with a TFTC title, Demon Knight and Bordello of Blood. Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings, King Kong), who had previously done the splatter comedies Bad Taste and Braindead in New Zealand, pitched them the idea for Frighteners to be made as a TFTC movie, but eventually, while they loved the idea, they decided to do this a stand-alone title. This movie also stars Jeffrey Combs as the creepy Government Agent specialized in cult activity and crimes. Combs is best known by horror fans for Stuart Gordon's and Brian Yuzna's Lovecraft adaptations, especially from the role of Doctor Herbert West from the three Re-Animator movies, splatter comedies, which are very, very loosely based on (more like, "inspired by") Lovecraft's short story. Evil Dead 1 and 2, and Re-Animator and Bride of Re-Animator, plus Monty Python, were major influences to Jackson in his early career. I suggest reacting to the first two Re-Animator movies, while Yuzna's Beyond Re-Animator, in its outlandish insanity, is more like pure fan service for horror and splatter comedy fans. Fun trivia: Gordon and Yuzna pitched the idea for Rick Moranis Sci-fi comedy Honey, I Shrunk The Kids to Disney, but Stuart Gordon, who was supposed to direct it, had to leave the project for health reasons. They still have a writing and story credit on the movie.
Why would you tell this kid to Watch Full Metal Jacket are you trying to fuck him up? He has no exposure or context for the Vietnam War and he’s just going to think everybody is an asshole. Do not watch Full Metal Jacket. Not until you at least watch Rambo First Blood, We Were Soldiers or Platoon. Otherwise you’re going to have your soul destroyed Ollie.
@@iamrobot1c I typed up a response to your comment and soon realized it's pointless. So my new response is, *facepalm* Do what you want Ollie. It's a brutal movie that really makes you think. I first saw it when I was 13 and it did leave a mark, a positive mark. I like how it shaped my thoughts on war and the horrors that go along with it. Other than my mom, it probably pushed me more than any other influence to be more of a peace-loving type of a person rather than a war-monger...
When I saw a review by a young person as I was watching clips from this movie, I became curious. So I listened to your review. It's one of my absolute favorites of all time, and I'm 56 years old. One movie I'd recommend for you would be "Identity" with John Cusack and Ray Liotta. It's one of those that you're better off going in blind to it and just watching it. I think it's awesome
I really enjoy this one, despite some cringe moments (Judge molesting a mummy 🤢). As much as I love John Astin (TV Gomez Addams, among many other great roles), this is probably my least enjoyed performance of his as the Judge. Probably because he's under tons of make-up and effects work. Jake Busey and Jeffery Combs are at 11 throughout, and seem to have a blast playing villains. Combs in particular does a lot of campy movies, and is in some wild stuff. Pre-LotR Peter Jackson likes to have a lot of fun and showcase gross and fun special effects, which I really enjoy. After LotR, he's kinda pretentious and full of himself, imo. Haven't enjoyed anything he's done since Return of the King.
