  • The Parks Canada team at Thousand Islands National Park is using radio telemetry to track the Gray Ratsnake, a threatened species at risk. In spring 2022, five Gray Ratsnakes had radio transmitters implanted with support of local vets and science staff. These snakes were released back into the wild and located weekly by park staff using radio telemetry equipment. Tracking these snakes helps Thousand Islands National Park better understand their ranges, behaviour, and winter hibernation sites. This important work will allow Gray Ratsnakes to be better monitored and further protected.

When I was growing up I used to see rat snakes all the time near Kingston. Now you barely see them all.

Thank you! Brake for Snakes magnets are a popular way to raise awareness. While Parks Canada administered places have provided magnets at special events in the past, conservation groups in your area will likely have some available for sale. Many options can also be found for purchase online.
