As an old fart I would like to make two points.
1 Thank you for covering rifle safety
2 Thank you for showing a nice clean hut when leaving. Some people seem to forget their manners on the hill.
Keep making these vids.
Thanks mate, we hope everyone can take that tiny extra bit of time to leave our huts the way they're found! Common courtesy 👍 cheers for the comment
Cool, keep em coming. Tips on where ( not named areas but geographically )to hunt on public land and different times of the year would be cool
Good idea, there's alot of info there between different seasons and species!
Great idea guys.
I bet there’s plenty of young hunters who’ll get heaps out of this type of vid.
A little thing that i really liked was you said "sorry mate" while you were patting him. I do the same thing.
Awesome video, lads. Please keep the educational/tips ones coming if you can.
Im just trying to get into it, (better late than never) and am happy to learn of some well seasoned good fellas.
Cheers feom Dunedin!
Looking at getting into hunting and felt this helpful. Thanks for marking video guys. Well done on promoting safe firearms practices too.
Great stuff lads ,i enjoyed that ,great atitude ,keep it up ,from an old fella.
Hey man from a guy who is clueless on how to find deer but persistent. It’s always cool to learn how others do it. Thanks
Another good vid boys, maybe a mention on anabatics and catabatics for part 2? Stuffed me up heaps in my early days! 😂
That's a great idea mate, us too 😂
Awesome video guys a good hunt is when ya make it home safe an a mean hunt is when you get a deer an make it home ya video has a lot of good points keep it up
Too right mate
Great vid guys. Very informative and well done on filling the Freezer. 🤙🤙
Cheers mate, can never say no to a freezer full of venison!
Love it boys keep them coming please
Really enjoyed your no nonsense approach and happiness to share your knowledge and tips. Thank you.
Mitch .... MITCH!!! ... yeah boy! 😁👍👍
The man was zoned in for sure !! Haha
Awesome video, you really represent NZ hunters well. I'd love to see more how to videos.
Thanks mate, we haven't filmed any more yet but have put a bit of thought into a couple!
thanks for the help guys didnt know about the website to look for public hunting spots that actually shows public accessways !
Awesome video first time watcher new subscriber gets the heart pumping
Good concept. There’s not many vids like this keen to see more
Cheers boys mean vid Keep it up, love the synergy between you two.
Great video guys, really enjoyed your no frills approach, look forward to the next one!
Good that you mentioned a few important points about firearm safety, and that you left the hut clean and door and windows securely closed so possums and kea don't get in and mess it up. Keep it up guys, love watching your videos as this is what me and my mates did, from CHCH, through our late teens and up into our 30s. These days we mostly tramp and it's great just to see the animals.
Great vid, really enjoyed the details with the hits and tips. More vids like this would be great. Chur
Bloody awesome! More hunting tutorials would be awesome, talking about what sort of areas you want to be looking at for hunting when scouting out areas on Topo would be cool!
That's a great idea mate, nothing beats a bit of topo time 😂 will save that one for a rainy day stuck in a hut or a tent 👌
Yeah great video, unique and great tips even for other experienced hunters to see. Everyone has their own tricks. Good to share others so keep
It up. My kids loved this vid too.
Awesome work guys. Keep it up. Nothing wrong with a good spook and shoot.
Nice Job. I like the idea of getting the back stakes out the back!
Pretty handy wee trick, will have to do it on camera at some stage
Well done guys, pretty easy to watch you fellas.
Moving to NZ from the states soon. Excited to learn new animals and new places. Thanks for the videos. Keep them coming.
Epic, you're going to love it over here! Very different to hunting the states, ungulates are a pest here so they're managed very differently!
@@southislandriflewalkers5545 I can not wait! Been reading up on NZ hunting regs and firearm laws. Need to figure out how best to bring my rifle with me.
How easy is it to jump from island to island to hunt? It is super complicated when wanting to hunt out of my state, also expensive to even get permits and tags.
I like the way you put that together by using a hunt to actually demonstrate it. Nice lads
Cheers mate, tried to make sure we kept it interesting 👌
Nice work boys....great enthusiasm and interesting content, cheers!
Good on you guys, great video and awesome footage, thumbs up.
Brilliant video guys. Extreamly well produced.
Thanks mate, appreciate the nice comment!
Top work lads. A good one to cover in future might be the most preferred deer tucker, they eat plenty more than just grass and that's something I definitely didn't know starting out.
Great idea mate, there's so much you could cover when it comes to making a hunt successful!
My best advice is to get your rifle suppressed.
It saves putting earplugs in and if you should happen to miss your shot, they always run towards you.
You don't need a magnum rifle to shoot deer or in fact any NZ species.I use a suppressed 25-06 and its a flat shooting laser for the mountains.
It definitely makes a difference! We've got most of our rifles suppressed, Chris's .300 used to be but he swapped out to a muzzle break because it weighed so bloody much 😂 cheers for the tip!
That was awesome, keep it up!!
Great video fellas. Would like more of the how to hunt on DOC land videos for us Aussies keen to come and give it a crack.
Don't know if I was watching the intro to a hunting video or lord of the rings.
Some awesome country up that way, great vid would definitely love to see some more, maybe make it a series and cover Thar, Chamois, pigs etc as well? There's a big market for new hunters wanting more information and tips on how to hunt in NZ.
Hahah we've got no shortage of pure scenes in our backcountry, it's not hard to see why they were filmed here! That's a great idea mate, we'll see if we can chuck something together at some stage 👌
@@southislandriflewalkers5545 good one boys can't wait! Hopefully won't be stuck in lockdown for too long.
would love some more content like this super helpful cheers
hey fellas bloody good video just subscribed coverd some good points there was awesome the way your hunt played out gotta love those deer that are all of sudden right there did well to get it on camera lucky the bugger turned that 2nd time aswell, look foward to the next video cheers boys
Gidday mate, cheers 👌 yeah got pretty bloody lucky a couple times in a row there 😅 couldn't believe it didn't take off whilst we were fumbling around with the camera!
This is a blood awesome vid guys. I'd watch ten more like it on you fellas going on a hunt and stalking some deer. Especially keen on the stalking tips and the dressing tips, and how to pack the meat away in your pack. Also maybe a 'gear feature' from a couple of the boys. Cheers!
Cheers mate, glad you liked it! We're thinking of doing a what's in our pack video later this year 😄
Excellent video, it gives some great background to your awesome hunting trips and videos.
Thanks for another great video, keep up the good work.
Love all your vids. This one was great too. Keep em coming. Well done
Cheers 🍻
Please do more of these. That was awesome.
Great video lads. Keep it up.
Thanks guys very informative
Great video lads, was just seeing whats currently out there as far as how to videos and this is good stuff.
Cheers mate. We're hoping to make some more down the line, hard to find the time
Awsome boys tiptop advice 👌🏽
Well done guys.......great vid
Good video guys enjoy it keep them coming cheers
Keep em coming fellas loved the info and the vid
Fellas awesome stuff. I was taken for my first hunt earlier this year down in the matukituki valley. It was unsuccessful but I'm definitely going to get into it, so as a newbie this kind of video is gold!!!
Good on you mate! Took us a fair few trips to knock our first animals over, makes it all the better when you get one! Glad you found some use in it 👌
I am really keen to get out and do sum of this, even just to join in a mission with sum good banter.
Great video keep’em coming thanks fellas!
Bloody good vid lads, some great points there and not just the hunting ones. Also good to see that biv finally has some mattresses in it, that bench is a touch narrow to sleep on. Keep em coming!
Cheers mate, its a cool wee spot!
@@southislandriflewalkers5545 yeah been years since I’ve been there, got torched by the sun walking on the snow right above where you guys were perched on the knob! Good times 🤣🤣
This was cool and I would very much like more of these types of video keep some more how to video
Cheers mate we'll see what we can do 👍
New subscriber here in Philippines keep safe guys
Top quality video, enjoyed that. Gives a good overview and gave me the same feelings you get from being out there, I've had a real desire to get out hunting again but I've not made the time, this was a good motivator. Thanks guys!
Good on ya mate, you won't regret getting out and about! Cheers 👌
These are great guys! Keep it up always good to hear and see way others hunt. Love this sort of content 👌
Loved this pls keep making these vids
Great vid fellas really helps newbies like me! :D
Happy to help!
Just found the channel boys, love your work. Awesome to see some stoke for a quality meat animal, a lot of content gets wrapped up in antlers and i know i'm not alone in thinking that big racks are just an exciting bonus, especially for newer hunters who should be more concerned with where the wind is blowing and what is (or isnt) in their chamber. Looking forward to more
Cheers mate. You're right there- as exciting as it is to chase the big fellas you can't beat some fresh venison!
Nice guys, I enjoyed it as always and the tips are great :)
Cheers Finn! Hope life's treating you well mate 👍
@@southislandriflewalkers5545 Indeed life is good, but I miss our beautiful mountains a bit so I always like to see them in your videos ☺️
bloody good
Mint vid top notch as always, after having the pleasure of hunting with you lads I must say your navigation and route planning is on point, Would be awesome to touch on this especially how ya get through the thick stuff!, pack contents would be epic too for new hunters, food - you guys have a bit more gourmet style than most which certainly makes a difference with energy levels, and how you hunt an area especially at different times of day! Keep em coming, good hunting!
Cheers Scotty, hope you're well mate! Definitely didn't feel so flash at route finding when we had to turn around after crossing the main flow on our way to Basecamp 😂 Those are some good points though, will try and think of some ways to communicate our thought process. Can't beat a good feed in the hills hahah
Great video!
More beginner tips videos please.
Cool vid guys and we'll done securing a good eater. Also, 10 out 10 showing proper back country/ hut etiquette. Always disappointed to find litter, or a messy hut with an empty wood box. Well done 👍👌
Cheers mate 👍 It's so easy to tidy up after yourself in the backcountry, it always bewilders us that people think it's okay to leave their rubbish behind
Handy tips lads. Cheers.
Great vid! Cheers for info!
Thanks for the effort putting this together. One thing I like as a hunter but don’t hear much about is rifle calibers and projies used. Also scopes and binos. Just interesting to hear what people are using.
Cheers mate, we'll try talk about our choice of optics in a future episode 👍
Cheers boys good watch
Nice vid and great advice guys.
Nice work boys 👍🏻
Great video, thanks
As an African hunter in NZ it was refreshing to see some grass roots hunting - no fancy sponsored gear, shooting for then of the kill, bad language and other macho bull++++ like so many other young guys put up on their videos .Keep it real, then you will have some real times to keep! Lets see what else you do!
Bloody good bros great video and real good info
Mitch was locked on 🤣
Learning about katabatic and anabatic winds was a game changer for me. They are your worst enemy and can’t be avoided in some situations. Was about to get my first public land stag with a bow and about 50m away felt that wind on my neck even with a prevailing wind coming down the mountain. Gone when I poked over the ridge. Be a good point to explain to newer hunters.
It's never a good feeling when the wind tickles the back of your neck! Hope you've managed to get one since then mate 👍 definitely a good point to cover, cheers
Love the video
Cheers!
Bloody awesome video
Well done fellas, good advice given, more of the same and particularly more about your preparation and research to help others
Personally I’d like to hear more on your choice of caliber and ammunition and what’s in your pack and why. I know how hard it is but you make it look so easy which is a. Bit misleading for new hunters. We both know there is so much to be considered to be a safe and ethical hunter. So did deep fellas and share your thoughts and reasons why.
Stay Safe
Regards from lockdown in Melbourne
Rex
Sure thing mate we can go into that in a future vid, we're thinking of making a "what's in our pack" video in the future so that should cover a lot of good info 👍
This is a very good video. Can you do one for new bow hunters.
Cheers! Bow hunting is something we haven't had a go at yet, definitely on the list though! If we do get into it we'll try share our learning experiences 👍
Great vid boys and great info and tips for newbies getting into the hunting game .... wind up ya arse, skyline give away, rifle safety, particularly in the heat of excitment
I recognise the place .... wink
Hahah cheers Bob, definitely didn't try too hard to hide the location in this one 😂
@@southislandriflewalkers5545 keep it quiet tho.... ya can't hand feed anyone too much, yous have already given them a brilliant helping hand
They'll be wanting gps co-ords next lol
Good vid boys
Great video lads! Would you recommend that spot early October time, or would we be better aiming for river flats etc until it warms up a bit?
Cheers mate! River flats would definitely be the ticket, lots of spring growth so any grass should be a deer magnet... Cheers!
Nice video guys. It would be nice to see how you use your tech when in the backcountry. i.e. how your in-reach gets you a weather report.
We'll keep that in mind for future videos, cheers mate
Great video guys, is there tips on how to navigate your way back in the dark, or are you two familiar with the area?
A good headtorch is essential! It was a new area to us, paying attention to any issues you might come across on your way out is always helpful. If you're new to backcountry trips I wouldn't recommend traveling at night
@@southislandriflewalkers5545 thanks mate, can you save the hut on your Garmin and use that as a way to find your way back to the hut?
@@thekingschildren4303 Yeah for sure! Download NZ Topo 50 to your phone if you have one. Very user friendly topo maps that have tracks and huts already on them, you can add points to them as well. Great, easy and cheap tool for navigating 👌
Epic lads
When you find yourself closer to a animal then what u sight your rifle in for do you aim higher or lower ?
If we're that close we don't usually worry! This article might be of use to you 👍
goodblokes.nz/in-close-should-i-aim-high-or-low/
As a North island hunter I’m gathering most of the areas you guys hunt is around the west coast/Canterbury boundary? Happy hunting!
Yeah we definitely do the bulk of our hunting within a couple hours drive of Christchurch, would love to branch out a bit more!
Hahaha "$20 head torch from the wearhouse " yeah I'm thinking of grading from that now
Hahah I took my time to get there but it's definitely worth it! I recommend the MH10 or the H7R from ledlenser, H7R is more waterproof but I've had no issues with the MH10 👍
Mean video team🤙🏻how about on finding water up high and finding a good tent site in the roar
Good idea, could cover a few points for that one. We'll talk through our thought process with it when we're next in that situation 👍
Solid vid lads. Wasn’t too shit at all. Cheers.
Hahah cheers mate 🍻
Great video! What do you do with the carcass if it would take say two days to get back to civilization? I'm based in the North Island (so a bit warmer than where you guys are). Cheers
As soon as we get the meat off the carcass we put the meat somewhere to cool. Once its cooled off chuck it in an old pillow case and try keep it in shady places when it's not in your pack on the move. It should stay good for long enough to get it home and in the chiller/freezer even in mid summer, it definitely gets a bit harder in the heat though. If we're going after meat in summer conditions we try shoot an animal as late in the trip as possible, you should get a couple of days before it'll start to green up!
@@southislandriflewalkers5545 Thanks very much for the advice! (Sorry I realised I never replied to you..). All the best for 2023!
Did you find my cave Chris??? I left my AirNZ raincoat in it.
You're gonna have to elaborate on that a bit more 🤣 what cave and who's this haha
Thoroughly enjoyed the video! I’ve been living in NZ for 4 years and still haven’t hunted the lands. But I’m finally gearing up to go hunting. Just a question with regards to the kill once it’s been butchered. If you’re out in the bush, is it acceptable to leave the carcass where you shot and butchered the animal? Or how does it work in NZ? Cheers!
Hey mate, glad you enjoyed it! Generally the animals we harvest are a long way from any tracks, huts or popular spots so we're not too worried about leaving them where they lay. Whenever we shoot an animal on a riverbed we will drag the carcass up into the bush/off the riverbed in case it rains/floods- nice to keep it away from any water 👌
Thanks heaps for this video guys. I'm a long-time tramper, and have done a reasonable amount of shooting, but looking for/stalking deer is something that is still very foreign to me - top tips?
Glad you enjoyed it! You can never spend too long looking through the binos 👌
some humour about hunting: "The Russian thinks that the Chukchi (the folk in North of Russia) is a fool. The Chukchi thinks that the Russian is a fool.
A Russian is sitting at a Chukchi's place - they are drinking. The Chukchi says: "Let's go polar bear hunting - I will prove that the Russian is a fool, however!"
They got together. They are walking. They have walked 10 km. no one, 20 - no one, 30 - no one, 40 - not a single living soul, 50 km and suddenly a polar bear appears... The Chukchi runs up to the bear and teases it. The bear gets angry and runs after them.
There are 40 km left to the house, 30 km to the house, and 20 km to the house. The Russian can't take it anymore and shoots the bear - death. The Chukchi comes up to the Englishman and says: "I told you - the Russian is a fool!!!" "Why?" - he asks. "Who will carry the bear home?!"
Can an American show up rent a 4x4 of some sorts from the air port and do this?
Yeah mate, you'll have to get a visitors firearms license and a doc permit though. The doc permit is as easy as checking a few boxes online - super straight forward. Not too sure about the visitors firearms license, might have to do some research on that one 👍
An American? Well, um not too sure about that 😂
Good on you boys. Loved the safety aspects. Good for everyone. Cheers...no it wasn't a shit video.
