I am a guitar player but have recently purchased a bass and was looking at different videos to help get me ready to switch things up a bit. I have seen a huge amount of guitar teachers online, most are good enough, a few are quite good. I have instantly fallen in love with your style of teaching. Your style of speaking and teaching seems very deliberate, and was rather easy to follow. The way you phrase many of your sentences reminds me of some Guthrie Govan videos I have seen, whom I regard to be one of the better teachers on youtube. You have just made an instant subscriber.
As it turns out, aside from the part about the physical differences in playing, I already knew all of this from my experience with guitar! Good stuff, here! I don't think I would have liked you as a teacher when I first started playing guitar; I didn't really have the attention or interest for the more foundational theory and such. But now that I'm more experienced and mature, both as a guitarist and as a person, I'd appreciate someone with your style of teaching more.
Many more people should make music. The bass is unfortunately not very popular today. Your video may bring more guitarists to the bass! Go on! Thumbs up!
Should I take up the base sir....I have been learning guitar for 1 year.......I have a band...but I think the keyboard is nowadays playing the bass part....will playing bass hell?
I play both (guitar primarily), but the annoying thing is that when I tell people that I play guitar, a lot of them turn around and ask; "lead" or "bass"?
Its quite arrogant to think that by being a guitarist and learning the blues and pentatonic scales you will become an instant bass player ,there is a hell of a lot more to being a competent or even a good bassist than playing those two scales , besides the blues scale isn't even a proper scale really , guitarists assume bass must be easy because they commonly only have 4 strings . Your right to encourage students to think in numbers but I would teach the C scale and modes first and keeping time.
I am sorry I don't agree with everything you are saying and I would like to add that in this day and age bass has become a solo instrument with the addition of high C 5 strings and looper pedals . Many guitarist hate bass players soloing as they beleave a bass players role is to lay down root notes so they can noodle over the top and get all the attention , don't get me wrong a bassist shouldn't step on other musicians toes but be able to add complimentary notes to a solo too, so a good understanding of theory eg knowing how to use tonics or taking numbers of a given chord instead of playing roots, bass is not a simple instrument if one wants to learn it properly I thought bass was easy until I discovered Jaco Pastorius , I would also encourage bass players to take drumming lessons too, peace and love .
bassman "besides the blues scale isn't even a proper scale" oh bassman the blues scale is every bit as proper as every other scale. my favorite scale is the C major scale because it not only is all of the white keys but also has the relative minor of A. minor. which is very conducive to the standard tuning of the guitar.
There is no blue scale in classical music , I haven't come across any Bach blues , lets not forget Bach laid down the foundations for western music as we know it .
I now realise that you shouldn't even touch a drum unless you intend to become as good as Buddy Rich. I should never have given my granddaughter that djembe.

Great video with some good tips but in my view calling the bass a "guitar" does not make it one. Bass is bass. Guitar is a different instrument.

Any pleb can "play" bass.... hold string down pluck along with drummer, let guitarist entertain the punters.
