This parade makes me think of the quote from Lyudmila Pavlichenko, the Soviet sniper who killed hundreds of nazis during the War. She was touring the US during Roosevelt's term. The press would not take her seriously and kept asking about her uniform, saying it made her look fat. Her response: “I wear my uniform with honor,” she told Time magazine. “It has the Order of Lenin on it. It has been covered with blood in battle. It is plain to see that with American women what is important is whether they wear silk underwear under their uniforms. What the uniform stands for, they have yet to learn.”

These beautiful ladies paying a most glorious tribute to their ancestors who gave their lives defending the Motherland during the Great Patriotic War. I believe that the fallen are watching, smiling proudly from heaven, knowing that their sacrifice was not in vain and made this moment possible.
Everyone certainly looks happy. I remember the famous photo from the last May Day parade where Soviet sailors marching along were pelted with thrown objects and were being taunted by the crowd; one of the sailors had this look of total dejection on his face. By December of '91, the Soviet Union was gone. Can't find it now; it should have been preserved. The caption on the wire photo: "In St. Petersburg, Soviet sailors march past a jeering crowd in the last days of the Soviet Union." There was this older gentleman in uniform trying to maintain his composure as he marched, but there were tears on his face. I remember that look in his eye. I imagined he was thinking, "All these years of loyal service, and it has come down to this, being rejected by my own people. How is it that we are now a disgrace?" Putin was right. The breakup of the USSR was very poorly handled. Too much was just given away to corrupt interests who made a fortune buying state assets on the cheap. Those people were regarded in the West as heroes of capitalism (they still are). But they were just ordinary crooks. Putin gave them what they deserved.
