  • In the early hours of Wednesday 30 August 2023, military officers in Gabon announced they were seizing power from President Ali Bongo Ondimba in a stunning coup, threatening the Bongo family’s half-century rule over the central African nation.
The soldiers said they were annulling the results of recent polls in which Ali Bongo had been declared the winner but the opposition said the election had been rigged. But who is Ali Bongo and how did Gabon get to this point? To some, he is a spoilt, playboy prince who saw ruling the oil-rich Gabon as his birthright. This one-time aspiring musician stepped into his father's shoes to continue his family's rule.
In this episode of African Biographics, we cover the rise of Ali Bongo as well as events leading to his fall.

The good news is that Ali Bongo is gone...the bad news is that the coup seems to look more like a family fight since the General in charge of the coup is a relative.
The darker more cynical part of me says that the extended family of the Bongos were worried that given Ali's weakened state he may end up losing his grip on power permanently and if that were to happen the sweet times of kleptocracy would finally be over.

Consider the fact that just 11 men, namely Paul Kagame of Rwanda (23 years), Paul Biya of Cameroons (42 years), Teodoro Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea (43 years), Dennis Nguesso of Congo (38 years), Isias Afwerki of Eritrea (30 years), Yoweri Museveni of Uganda (37years), Alhassan Outtara of Ivory Coast (13 years), Gnassingbe Eyadema of Togo (38 years), his son Faure Eyadema of Togo (18 years), Omar Bongo of Gabon (42 years) and his son Ali Bongo of Gabon (14 years) collectively ruled different African countries for a total of 347 years in the name of democracy!
This is what can best be described as AFRICA WONDER!

Hey Tatenda and thank you for the video so quickly released. I used to live in Libreville Gabon but now I live abroad. A country with such a small population but blessed with too much minerals and yet there’s so much poverty and a lack of infrastructures. Just like any other African country, the former colonial powers with their friends aka dictators are a hindrance to Africa’s development. Examples are many: Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea Conakry, Niger and now Gabon. All have a lot of minerals that France is too happy to take home and yet these populations see no change at all. The result: people revolt and oust their presidents. I can only hope that the new guys in power will do good to the people that have suffered long enough under Bongo family.

He actually did release 2 singles as well, one with Jimmy Ondo, and the other one with B-side "Yesterday's Love" only included in that said single.

The issue with a lot of these countries is that their leaders weren’t set out to be politicians. So Gabon had an unpopular, foreign, musician leading the country. C’mon Africa 🤦🏽‍♂️

Power is contagious, after Ali B suffered the stroke he became a cabbage but he was still insistent on being president.... The happenings are very much okay since this is a self centred individual who could have groomed a successor and still continued to enjoy the trappings of power.

Question: why didn’t you do Mohammad Bazoum (ex-president of Niger) first?
Is it because of the denial of France, ECOWAS and the international community of the legitimacy of the successful coup?
