Worst case scenario you make $4 profit on each cover sold. $250 or so worth of product per hour / 14 Hours worth of printing for the machine to pay for itself after that you could make over $6k worth of covers per day minimum which sounds great til you realize you only sell a few per day on all available platforms.
Even if this was true, it's still a cool printer for makers. It's way too pricey for me, but if I could afford it, I'd buy one and I don't even sell products. I'm thinking about selling 3D printed stuff but still have a ways to go. 3D printers still maker people money and you see videos on those all the time.
In a related "product", I work in a commercial electrical company and we use a UV laser to mark cover plates (switches, receptacles, blanks, etc) with circuit numbers or other information as needed. It's the same "indestructible" type covers. I have a template board for alignment in the printer and I just cover most of the plate with painter's tape, use coreldraw to fire up the laser and raster in text or diagrams to burn through the tape and into the plate before finally filling in the mark with plastic-bonding spray paint with the remaining tape as a mask. It takes a little time with all the individual steps but makes a sharp looking piece. For stainless steel we skip the tape and spray on a metal marking compound which looks somewhat like an ugly gray/yellow spray paint but makes an indelible black mark into the metal when lasered, so it remains no matter what cleaners or handling happens. This has been a big saving/profit center for the company since we brought this kind of signmaking, label making, everything-marking services in-house for ourselves and for customers.
@@skytek7081 I have a LaserPecker Engraving machine - I love the idea of using the tape and then Lester etching the design and saving time using the remaining tape as a mask. Thank you for this tip. I’m going to try it. Have a wonderful day.

Great idea! May I suggest you align the screws vertically (plumb) when you lay them on the bed? Then the pattern will align when the screw is plumb, looking even better. And you have many more options for SKU's when you add in the Decora style covers and the magnetic ones (with NO screws). Nice work and thank you for sharing Jay!
Guys if you want to make $720 an hour, the trick is to not calculate the time it took to create the designs, set up the design on the computer, cut the plywood board, drill the plywood board holes, buy the material, cost of the ink, time to create the listings on Amazon, time to respond to Amazon customers, time to pack and ship the $8.99 item. Cost of box, packing materials and shipping, time to take items to the Post office. Also, don't include the initial cost of the computer, software and printer which also have a finite lifespan.
So if you go to college and have 100k in school loans, you can't say you earn 40 dollars an hour in your career... I get your point, and agree with it, but it doesn't add up the way you imagine.

As an electrician. I would like to give you advice with the screws. A electrician a good electrician always knows to have the screws straight up and down. You’re concerned about looks when finished and this is one thing that shows electricians take that extra step.
And just how much money have you made off of this and how long did it take you to make those sales? What is your total cost per completed switch plate?
Holy smokes man. I kept expecting you to have gone to all of that effort to make the board because you needed to attach the plates to it. You can just get some rigid foam board and press the screws into it. That would save you a mountain of time.
ha ha! this is my home computer since I am at home recording the video for youtube for fun. my company has several commercial licenses for our computers I just didn't think about it at the time for the video
Not sure who would pay ten bucks for one, at best maybe four or five, so you need to sell maybe 800 with shipping costs to break even. If it sounds too good to be true, it ususally is.!
At that rate you'd have to be printing to new a plate every 45 seconds or so, is that really accurate? If you account for the unwrapping and general manual labor it's probably closer to 10 minutes per than 7 minutes per batch of 9, which would make it closer to 500 than 720 per hour

Cool video but, misleading for sure, the link to your popular cover you sell on Amazon only sold one, and this very affordable printer is $3500. Not affordable at all. 👎
Yeah, he sells printers, not outlet and light covers. Nobody that makes almost 6k a day tells you their secrets unless their secret is no longer a secret.....to most anyways.
There is definitely some "youtuber math" going on here. You don't earn any money at all by printing those. You earn the money when the items sell. Seems like the title and a lot of what you say in the video is just designed for clicks, and to get people to buy the printer. Using words like "potentially" would make this a bit more accurate. You could "potentially" earn "X" amount if you can sell all of these. Also, you don't make $10 each unit, in terms of profit. There are so many costs associated that you don't mention. Not the least of which is all the fees that go with selling on Amazon. There is also all the labor that goes into research, design creation, etc. I'm guessing that after all actual costs involved, you are probably making half or less than half of that. Nothing wrong with that, just click bait to say what you said in the title. At one point I think you even said you could make up to $1000 per hour. The implication is that you can make as much money as you want, just keep printing more items. But again, you don't get any money if it doesn't sell. I think you are falsely getting a lot of people's hopes up.
This is gross profit and intact we do gross this amount but do not net this profit you are right it is lower but still enough for a large shop to profit from this is not false info
Ask your customers to send a picture with the socket positioned, then you have their wallpaper pattern and can use CorelDraw/and your UV printer to print the wallpaper pattern over the socket, leaving only the rocker switch to show where the socket is located.
Just an O.C.D., observation. The screws, should be vertical when mounted on the wall. If you set all of them vertical just before printing, the patterns will be correct when mounted on the wall.
720$ an hour? I call BS.. for the simple fact that people aren't exactly knocking ya door down for light switch covers. Cool toy though and i do see potential, but light switch covers just aren't in demand like talkin about my guy. My question is can you do designs on say a pistol, or rifles? Or doest the object have to be perfectly flat? Even vehicle trim peices like around the radio or the gauges, or interior door handles, stuff like that for custom car builds. Anything that can be removed and is plastic. The possibilities are endless if it doesn't have to be perfectly flat. But light switch covers??? Nahhh😏😒

What I never understood about American homes.. why are the cover plates / wall boxes so huge and the actual switches so small? European boxes are smaller (and often round) but our switches are often nearly the entire width of the plate. Did this design just stuck from older times?

Super simple really, low physical impact. I'm familiar with 3d printing, own an ender 3 but recently looking at cnc milling, and laser engraving
Brilliant business owner and marketing. Your printers look awesome.
I know a retired guy who has something like this and makes side-money printing custom stuff for people locally. Sells stuff on Etsy and Ebay and makes about 1000$ extra a week. But, he's also retired and only does this casually.
Also, lots of comments are depressing.
If you'd like a bit of advice, the slots in the screws should be straight up and down. When installed in new buildings contractors do it this way so when the inspector comes by and looks he'll know that no one's been messing with the electrical besides the electrician. Any painter worth his salt Will always put the screws back in this position after removing for painting
I go by the way the switch plate is oriented, vertical the slots are vertical, horizontal the screw slots are horizontal. Looks better. People who leave them just facing any way idk how they sleep at night.
Personally I use a torque driver and tighten them up properly.
So besides the electrician, the painter could have been messing with the electrical.
@@adrianscarlett This sounds like one of those jokes that begin with "A contractor, inspector, and carpenter put on switch plates..."
@@adrianscarlett That's right, 585 pounds of torque!
thanks for sharing Jay. You've been really creative. I hope you have lots of success with your business.
In 2007 we used to print on ceramic tiles for kitchens doing the same process with a Gandy Jedi UV printer..
This is my next video already in the works 😄
@@JaysToDoList be sure you wipe everything down with isopropyl alcohol and that it’s clean and dry before printing..
now your talking
the 3rd hole is always a surprise
any way, the printer is cool, didnt know you could just print on plastic, or the other materials you claim.
I doubt any one would be making 720$ an hour with it though, especially not constantly, but i would still like to have a printer like that for my own personal projects. whats the brand and model? where can they be bought? approximate printer cost? aprox ink cost?
Reminds me of a guy trying to sell my dad a key making business. That was the sixties
One suggestion. If you watch a pro install switch covers, they will align the screws so the slot is vertical. Make sure they are aligned vertically when you print on them.
Not all electricians have OCD.
@@e-curb No, but all electricians DO have the NEC!
You should think about Décor covers as every bathroom should have a GFCI plug in it and that is Décor shaped. Also you should make available to people to have a whole house done. There are actually very few single gang light switch covers in houses these days. So many two or three gang/ Again very cool idea.
😮😮😮 Gang-light switches? What in the WORLD ARE you talking about?!
Yes we do these as well, just didn't record them
Will this print on 5052 aluminum or does it have to be special aluminum coated? Can I send you aluminum plate to see if it will work? I want to buy this for my small business but don’t want to spend $3500.00 if it doesn’t work.
Sure we print on aluminum all the time you are welcome to send me some aluminum to print on for you. There is a metal coating to help with adhesion . You can send us a message through the website to do a test print jaysprinterparts.com
Truly an entrepreneur. When you said printing device plates being an electrician I assumed printing panel and circuit numbers like in a hospital. Had no idea printing like this existed. My Mother wallpapered her entire house some printed patterns on plates would be the bomb. Make me look like a decorating genius. Thanks for posting maybe we could do business ?
sure message us through the site email is much better Jaysprinters.com
These are really beautiful and so much fun. I loved watching this video. Thank you so much for sharing your design secret. Have a fantastic day!
You should have aligned the screws before printing
As an electrician. I would like to give you advice with the screws. A electrician a good electrician always knows to have the screws straight up and down. You’re concerned about looks when finished and this is one thing that shows electricians take that extra step.
So does a good DIY'er Sparky.
This would be cool to custom match a cover plate to a detailed tile backspash
that would be awesome
Super cool video!!!!! Thanks Jay Great job and no commercials or excess BS...
@johnschuster9192 thanks for watching
Brilliant idea Jay 👍
And just how much money have you made off of this and how long did it take you to make those sales?
What is your total cost per completed switch plate?
You can use double sided tape to hold the printing jig board.
Smart
Wouldn't velcro work? @@JaysToDoList
You should keep the slots in the screws vertical. It looks good
Holy smokes man. I kept expecting you to have gone to all of that effort to make the board because you needed to attach the plates to it. You can just get some rigid foam board and press the screws into it. That would save you a mountain of time.
Actually very good idea thanks we just have lots of scrap wood since we are also a wood sign shop
Pretty cool. You just gave me a fantastic idea. Thanks for sharing this video. 😊
Interesting idea but its not how many you print its how many people buy
They look fantastic! Great color and quality.
Love your respect of the non-commercial corel draw software license.
Smooth
ha ha! this is my home computer since I am at home recording the video for youtube for fun. my company has several commercial licenses for our computers I just didn't think about it at the time for the video
Corel can suck a dick with their licensing practices. Pirate that shit all day. They rip off enough people as it is
Being a electrician this is smart to get into
Not sure who would pay ten bucks for one, at best maybe four or five, so you need to sell maybe 800 with shipping costs to break even.
No we package and prepare the items while the machine is printing the next lot of covers
My uncle does laser sketching for Wood panels on boat consoles. If you wanna make alot of money for overpriced parts go into the boating industry.
This video was awesome - thanks for sharing for real. This is indeed inspiring and I am very happy you have found some great luck with your sales!!!
How did you get connected with your customers? How did you advertise? Would be awesome to learn about. Cheers!
sure I will reveal alot of this information in the future on the channel as it builds but we cannot reveal all our secrets at once

That printer costs $3200, that’s a lot of cover plates. 400 before profit. Ouch
More like 10000 before profit. There is no money to be made unless you take custom requests
You look EXACTLY like my dad
I mean a 1 to 1 lookalike bro😂😂
Wow that’s very nice good job man keep it up I just seen this video but I imagine you could print on many different things with that uv printer A UV bottle printing machine for 14 years and there’s all kinds of things, but the company has put through it. I wouldn’t be worried about you sharing your products so much because you’ll keep coming up with more original great ideas.
Sure the guy makes money with it and maybe he's helping out some people who may want to do this for themselves, great! I've known of UV printers (I have other large printers for printing posters, canvas, etc) but I didn't know about them except they existed. Now I know and will probably keep an ear to the ground for a used one. Thanks for sharing!
Fluorescent light switch covers could be an interesting idea if you could print this sort of ink on it
We can and thats a good idea
Water transfer is cheaper. Requires way less up front cost, learning and gives a better product because it wraps around the side.
I was just thinking that.
how quickly can you do water transfer. I am thinking water transfer is more manual so it might work on something more profitable.
Great idea, nice presentation. Thanks.
How do you set that printing depth to assure that you don’t get a printhead strike on the tips of the screws? I presume its height is adjustable somehow. what is the farthest distance that you can print from the printhead to the printing surface?
Cool video but, misleading for sure, the link to your popular cover you sell on Amazon only sold one, and this very affordable printer is $3500. Not affordable at all. 👎
This guy is a fraud 🤣🤣 720 dollar /hour 😂😂😂
fantastic video! How often do the print heads go out and do you replace the dampers every time you change heads. Also how much for the heads
The xp600 head running uv inks maybe 6 months on average
Yeah, he sells printers, not outlet and light covers. Nobody that makes almost 6k a day tells you their secrets unless their secret is no longer a secret.....to most anyways.
By your whole setup I can tell you are making lots of monies
@Hugonis91 this is one of 4 shops take a look at our other videos
VERY COOL! How do these hold up with use/cleaning?
fine just dont clean with alcohol
@@JaysToDoListclear coat would fix that
Ask your customers to send a picture with the socket positioned, then you have their wallpaper pattern and can use CorelDraw/and your UV printer to print the wallpaper pattern over the socket, leaving only the rocker switch to show where the socket is located.
Really great stuff you are doing dude but maybe don't share the not for commercial use of the Corel Draw software to make videos about making money 😉
this is a home and student version on my personal home computer. we use commercial copies at work for our workers computers don't worry haha
Just an O.C.D., observation. The screws, should be vertical when mounted on the wall. If you set all of them vertical just before printing, the patterns will be correct when mounted on the wall.
horizontal.
I'm the one thinking this setup would be perfect for circuit labeling by industrial or commercial electricians 😂
I think you will get competition with this video. God bless your heart you're such a nice man this looks like so much fun
A real electrician, will want the slot of the screw perfectly vertical so dust will not collect. Love your setup
I have seen this comment alot but i think most or maybe all of these cover plates are not being installed by licensed electricians
I do that because I am OCD, I never thought about dust.
lol genius man! Hope you do great with them And that printer never stops printing.
Thanks
720$ an hour? I call BS.. for the simple fact that people aren't exactly knocking ya door down for light switch covers. Cool toy though and i do see potential, but light switch covers just aren't in demand like talkin about my guy. My question is can you do designs on say a pistol, or rifles? Or doest the object have to be perfectly flat? Even vehicle trim peices like around the radio or the gauges, or interior door handles, stuff like that for custom car builds. Anything that can be removed and is plastic. The possibilities are endless if it doesn't have to be perfectly flat. But light switch covers??? Nahhh😏😒
I think that’s its potential, not actual earnings
Most hardware stores don't do special graphics if any, why do you call this man a liar because he found a niche in the market, stop being a doubting Thomas and try it yourself.
Your an ID iot. Rifle stocks bahahaah
Great video Jay! Wondering where can I find the blank switch plate covers that you used?
Lowes and bhomedepot sell them in bulk
Why would you not align the screw slots vertically! 😭
Haha sure you can do this and do even more at once just just did it for the sake of the video real fast and didn't use the machine to its full potential 😉
Spoken by a fellow OCD person!
*I do Home Automation installations. EVERY cover plate I’ve ever touched (and many more) have the screws absolutely, perfectly vertical. Customers DO notice, it looks much nicer.* PS: my Yelp reviews are all 5-Star.
Exactly, when he showed the screw slots misaligned it was really weird to me.
@@BitSmythe - as you stated, always align the screw slit vertically. Not because you are OCD, but because the customer just might be OCD - it will make the customer happier.
Maybe he is selling printers. But I just checked Amazon. Covers like these can be had for around $5. So even though it is not $10, it's still not bad. Of course, you somehow have to get your product to the first page ahead of the other 1000 sellers. I have no idea how you do that.
Amazon Vine perhaps. I see several of them there now, though from Chinese sellers.
All these people claiming they have OCD because the screws dont line up don't have to live with actual OCD...
I was thinking the EXACT same thing. Anyone that actually lives w ocd is rolling their eyes at all those comments. It’s so frustrating
I can't believe the screws are not lined up vertically!! Having to choose between lining up the pattern or lining up the screw would piss me of every single time I look at it. Massively huge oversight in my book.
@DjSpinMaster maybe you should start to produce them if you believe you can do better the customers have never complained only viewers on you tube 😄
Dang! Wow! 🤑
Thanks, what a well done and inventive video! I had no idea a kind of printer exists actually. I figured maybe laser but this is cool! Will this work on any material or does it specifically need to be a hard and non-porous surface? I’m thinking about doing something crafty for my home but by doing sublimation printing which I have yet to figure out!
Yes this will print on most surfaces thanks for watching
"CorelDRAW 2020" "Not for commercial use" ... Bruh. You be violating EULA in plain sight. Best crop that part out in the future, or make it right with the correct license.
This is a cool video. I dig that blue design you showed at the end.
we have several licenses to corel draw. This is my home computer since I am recoding this at my house which is fine, we also have commercial licenses on the computers for commercial purposes thanks for looking out though
Thanks for the info man we appreciate it. Keep it up !
What I never understood about American homes.. why are the cover plates / wall boxes so huge and the actual switches so small? European boxes are smaller (and often round) but our switches are often nearly the entire width of the plate. Did this design just stuck from older times?
Yes harder to work on the smaller boxes
You could have turned 2 rectangles 90 degrees and got 2 more per pass, also check out space and align tool
Also, with smaller holes in the board, the screws could be used to locate the plates precisely, which would reduce setup time. 🤓
Absolutly we could of done this
you could do 14 if you orientated them the other way, as in your pic the switches would be in landscape
Good video & thanks for sharing looking for a decent machine. Dtf or uv idk yet this looks neat
Doesn't the ink of the UV printer smell bad? I thought you needed to have filtration and extraction but you don't seem to do that at all. Love your videos. Thanks for making them.
I have not had an issue and the manufacture has not told me that we needed these things
Thought? Provide source of your info sign seal
Very inventive! So original! Awesome job
Thanks
Why don’t you make all the screws vertical instead of just random positions?!
Cause that's how I do it. You can start making these and maybe do better then me and align your screws
To follow up, I just read a bunch of the comments. All of you "haters" should be ashamed of yourselves. Why don't you negative folks go produce a helpful video for those of you who have nothing better to do than talk crap. Good luck to all of you because you all matter, BE KIND.
@gigipaquette thanks there is alot of hate but don't worry I have thick skin and know what I am showing is good info
Good job, Jay, I really wonder where did you buy this printer.
