That's haunting.
Seriously, that’s actually horrifying.
I had to pause the video after that line and check the comments for responses to it. That’s such a well done line- it’s horrible, it’s haunting, and so well written
Loose lips sink ships.
And how they slow down their speech and hang up afterwards.
Incredible.
@@SouperWyevil martincitopants:
Funnily enough, Battleship itself may have a higher bodycount considering how many people crew larger naval vessels. But realizing how cold-blooded the whole thing with that first tenant phone call was awesomely evil.
Difference being, in Battleship any casualties are soldiers - they are actively participating in a war.
In this game? These are tenants in buildings. _These are civilians._
Rada rada soldiers rada bat an eye rada rada Joker quote
Thx.
These concrete buildings seem incredibly dense, which means they probably are probably pacted with disposable civilians.
Unlike in BattleShip, where the ships vary in size which also means they vary in crew.
@@PurelyHyperbolic An aircraft carrier alone can have between 3000 and 6000 personnel, let alone the other ships.
So the AI is scripted to miss all five shots in one turn so the player can get a phone call, but I wonder if someone intentionally missed all of their own shots beforehand to see how the AI reacts.
Probably wouldn't have mattered if it was scripted to go for a wipe after the phone call.
The AI is hard scripted. It always goes 5 hits, 5 misses, 5 hits, 5 hits, 5 hits, 5 hits. It always takes out the same buildings in the same order and missing your second salvo has no impact as the AI will always miss its second set of shots
@@old_sparky1365 which kind of blows that it's that scripted to be consistent because nobody that plays battleship is going to be that precise unless they are cheating.
@@cursedhawkins1305 So what you're saying is...
"The game was rigged from the start"
@@old_sparky1365 I'm glad that you revealed this, because it saved me the disappointment of downloading this game and finding out the hard way.
i think it be ALOT more dark if they added one or two more phone calls and hear the actual residents. but i guess it would make winning more easily and probably wont make sense
Maybe without having to mention in which building they are?
@@Crystalblood92 yeah and maybe make it that there are also other things that triggers the calls rather than only when the opponent misses all their shots
The rest makes perfectly sense🤣👍
I guess they really wanted to make all the horror in your head
If the game was more fleshed out/longer I think playing multiple rounds with different adjacent blocks of apartments, would have been the perfect setup for multiple different phone calls
I utterly love the impact FAITH has. Anytime anyone hears that TTS voice, they are compelled to croak, "M O R T I S." I have yet to see anybody resist the temptation. The most infectious earworm.

I remember Manly got a Mortis because he get hit by a random car for haphazardly crossing the street. 😹🪦
This does pretty good at the horror with the phone calls, but the way the buildings fall over sort of mitigates the horror.
Those were just small models falling over on a table. The real horror is the phone call connecting those simple models to living people.
Yeah, I kind of expected more rubble, sound, and screams.
@@cyberlemon9840 Screams would’ve dulled it even more for me unless they were paired with visuals.

i love this dev's games
Unless you are expecting a happy ending :P
His nickname klubnika translates to "strawberry" in Russian, if anyone cares
This is unironically really nerve-wracking. The feeling this game gives is so intense.
I like how they don't show you the enemy's "board", makes it more realistic, since you're essentially just calling it in and don't have to see the direct results of your actions.
Yeah. I don't want to bring here any politics but think about Russia VS Ukraine. There's someone on the Russian side that is seeing the Ukraine map and is completely fine to decide which settlements to cut off from the warm water or heat during the winter. This is crazy.
Definitely, specially the reveal of what the "call" is all about. Not gonna lie, at the end I kind of expected you to load and actually use the pistol in an accurate way due to the dev's tendency for tedious realism, but I'm sure that would have eliminated some of the tension. Would be funny though.
@@Drejkol I was kind of thinking some Cold War-esque scenario that lead to a WW3 Mutually Assured Destruction event afterwards
@@Drejkol well I mean, Ukraine did same with Crimea back then
This is so good. And that phone call when someone completely misses is a highlight in a way. It’s the realization of playing with someone’s emotions like that and the lying that’s really surprising and hits hard. Also the details like hearing the other pop first when you win before still picking up the gun yourself make this so much more perfect
You can actually win?
@@darthplagueis7851 yes, after manly loses he wins
The gunshot being heard first also happens when you lose is just that manly talked right in the moment and he dint hear it
@@pochiluis0570 Dang you’re right. Guess our players just slower. I assumed whoever won did the job after the loser

@@LynnAgain83 made that decision a couple months ago. Not my ending.
I love how this developer, like Zed_Technician (the one behind The Man From The Window) has been able to forge his own style that is so distinctive that you can almost instantly recognize when a game is one of his own.
Yames, is also pretty distinct, especially in theme

I really like the concept. This game would actually make an interesting story like a dystopian world where war is settled by playing a sadistic version of battleships and luring unsuspecting civilians who are seeking refuge from the wars to live in the area, to make the stakes higher
It absolutely would. I'd watch it in a heartbeat. Sucker for dystopian horror.
Did you just give the story of the game and go "it would be an interesting story"?
@@itsgonnabeanaurfromme Yes. Yes I did. Is something wrong?
Besides we don't even know why they are bombing apartment buildings with people in them, who the people are, and what the actual end goal is (besides bombing all the enemy's buildings). If someone expand this game into a full-blown story then yes, it would be an interesting story
m8 this ain’t a story about a fictional world
I don't think there are two diferent governments envolved, so no war. I think it's just populational control.
One overlooked thing is when you fly in a helicopter, you get a glimpse of enemy building locations.
Also, your own building arrangement seems to be the same as the enemy, just rotated.
A bit late, but
The "helicopter people" seem to be neutral ones or game hosters, as well as people who call you on the phone. So they may see both the layouts.
@@sdbadik no shit.
This is insanely dark and super creative, I really like it. And people say creativity is dead.
Which people?
Mine is
Creativity still and will always exist, it's just that not everyone will appreciate it and to get publicity is very luck depending. There's a lot of awesome indie games out there. But AAA games regardless of how trash they are, they still get the mainstream attention easily because they got the cash to advertise it to a wider audience.
Creativity is just more rare now because most of the ideas have been used already. Its not dead but its harder to figure out an original idea.
@@BeyondDaX As Manly says, almost everything has been done already in horror, what matters most is presentation.

I will say I do find the idea interesting, and possible symbolism etc
But I gotta admit I was kinda taken out of the immersion a lot when “oh, your opponent magically knows the exact location of all your buildings and is able to blow them up without flaw”.
The first time around, I thought "the opponent is cheating".
The second time around, I thought "but we're cheating better".
It was an interesting series of emotions, but like with you, it killed my immersion.
seems like the game either expects you to lose and don't try again or try again and cheat, killing all the immersion
Yeah, it would be more interesting if you *actually* play a round of battleship.
I can understand why they decided to script the opponent's moves rather than develop an AI but man, they should've scripted it so the AI missed some. Like, at least give the illusion of the player having a chance.
To be fair, it does look like you actually have the same map as the opponent, if you pay close enough attention to your own side's building positions.
A horror story for most, but a fairytale for real estate builders. Imagine the money to be made! Mortis/10. (This is why they don't allow roof access in most places. There are battleship stations on most roofs but they don't want you to know that.)
Been lots of videos coming out of China lately of real estate developers blowing up blocks of apartment buildings because they can't sell them or afford to finish them.

Manly, as a slav(developer is also a slav) this is our rendition of battleship, although a bit changed, in our rendition you can't have ships near ships not normally, nor diagonally, you could win easier with this knowledge
Also, the helicopter view shows you where the buildings are :P (Except for a mistake on the 3 line, where the 3 and 1 are in the other possible spots)
Same for Canadian battleship tbh
Yeah the buildings are really similar for me (also a slav)

@RensmokTheSmack huh, in other sources I saw that they are Ukrainian... or was that the VotV dev? No, that one's russian, you are probably right.

This is an amazing concept. What a shame, that there isn't more. Like actually playing battleship, instead of scripting. Randomized building placements, choosing your dialogue in the phone calls so maybe you miss on purpose so you can try to warn the people or try to communicate with the other player by constantly missing. Dev should expand this and sell it on steam.
I don’t think you got the message
Love the idea
@@AnonD38 I don't think you got the comment, just because you can't change fate doesn't mean that it shouldn't have some smart design behind it.
The game is so scripted to the point the other player isn't even a rudimentary AI. You're suppose to be playing against a player in a helpless situation where you can't change things.
Trying to miss every time would be acknowledged by getting a phone call saying "You're going to die if this continues." and maybe even show you the winner dying just to rub the fact in you changed nothing.
Everything ends with you being forced to use the gun or starve.
You could even go so far that you get different personalities for the enemy AI and some would miss with you purposefully which if you do long enough you'd even get a call saying "Let me help you." and automatically start targeting the other player perfectly.
You can keep the same message but improve upon it massively.
False hope can make it even stronger of a message.
@@Buglin_Burger7878 I was talking about the parallels to real life actually.
@@AnonD38 That isn't saying much.
