Google the "weavin' Stephen" for a way to weave in all those yarn ends as you go. It may be a game changer for you, especially while you're in your color era!

It’s super pretty! Mosaic Ravelry Roulette for the win! If you’re new to colour work you can’t go wrong with Tin Can Knits. When adding a new yarn (same or different colour) I work the first stitch with the new yarn, then lay the old yarn over the new working yarn and it’s end and continue knitting trapping the yarn. Gently pull and tighten up the old yarn as needed.

Beautiful blanket. And yeah, mosaic knitting is awesome. I have a couple of great mosaic sock patterns for socks and they are perfect because you can get the color work without the floats that can change the diameter of a sock. So I don’t have to worry about resizing a sock, but still get the gorgeous patterns.

I'm definitely cheking out Dianna Walla! Thanks for the tip. Also, when you were talking about your first colorwork project, it reminded me of my first one too: I chose the Color My Cowl by Very Pink Knits. The motifs are purposely selected so that there won't be big floats and are easier to knit and control yarn tension. Use whatever weight yarn you have or like, make it a cowl or a scarf and you don't have to worry about gauge being off and the item not fitting. She also gives a chart for you to play with crayons and choose your colors.

Love that Flea sweater! The colours are just gorgeous! Enjoy this time of life with your littles...our son just started HS and is in marching band program that is really rigorous and also running x-country... so we hardly ever see him during the week it seems... and we're a family that actually sits down to dinner together every night - so him not getting home until after 8 some nights is SO strange!! I'm currently winding balls of wool to knit 4 more pairs of your fire pit mitts. They have become such a great go to for gift giving. Thank you!!!!!!
As a recently retired traditional karate instructor, I'm thrilled that you have put your boys into martial arts. I hope you find the experience beneficial for your family. Congratulations to your boys on earning their first black stripes! And congratulations to both of you, Mom and Dad! Your kids do awesome because of your love, hard work and support.
My husband and I work next to each other, so he is enjoying your blogs with me too - especially your "Hello Hello Hello". He would like to know how you get into the mindset, in front of the camera, to speak like you are speaking to a person, rather than to a camera. He is wondering, if you have a teddy bear or something to talk to, behind the camera.

My first stranded colourwork pattern was the Paul Klee sweater by Midori Hirose, I would definitely recommend it for a first project if you want to make a sweater. You're only ever working with 2 colours at a time and it's just squares with occasional increases, so you can focus on managing your yarn instead of the pattern! It's also a great way to use leftover yarn and play with colour and textures. I absolutely love my Paul Klee and I can't wait until it's cold enough to wear it again :)

For beginner colour work knitters, I would highly recommend Jessica McDonald's sweater patterns. They're so easy and quite a few are just using the main colour and then the contrasting for the colourwork design. So, yarn management is really easy. Also the Leftover City cowl by Kacey Herlihy. That's what I used to teach myself colourwork.

Yes! I need to try that. We went on a hike last weekend and I was sort of obsessed with this app that identifies the plants. I felt like a wandering cunning woman foraging for healing herbs (I didn’t actually pick anything 😅) because I saw lots of elderberry (rather toxic right off the stem, interestingly) and yarrow and even hemlock. So when I was at Whole Foods after our hike, grocery shopping, I saw the assortment of Rishi tea and the elderberry kind and thought, this is way easier. 😂😂

You can knot the ends together, snip off the excess yarn, not too much though. Block inside out and “scrumble” the ends together with your fingers until they’re fuzzy. Dry and trim ends gently, not too close.

Have you seen the braiding technique for weaving in ends? You have inspired me to make a flea sweater- I’m so keen. I think I saw it done by Wool and Pine designs? Although I was a crocheter initially, the kitting over the ends makes total sense to me- as that’s how I deal with the ends when I’m crocheting- but it might be a different option.

  • @bridgetattheravelldsleave156

I have a friend who knit the Seaglass Sweater, and at the end, she would do a small braid of the ends every few rows to secure them instead of weaving them in the usual way. She swore by that method, FWIW.

I've made several mosaic crochet blankets with tons of ends. Rather than tassles on the ends or weaving in the ends, there is a great technique called double crochet envelope border which sandwiches all the ends between 2 layers of crochet. BEST BORDER EVER!🎉🎉 Perhaps there is a knit equivalent?

Hi Valerie! So it’s the same here with black belt testing. My boys are receiving their first black stripe on their white belts. It the first rank up from basic white belt. lol. They’re nowhere near black belt status! However, that’s the goal for both of them and I’ve not seen them more motivated to earn something for themselves than with this. It’s so exciting.

@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS now that makes so much more sense. My husband's club uses yellow stripes on white belts with black stripes on the red belt, just before the black one. I was worried because my niece was in a martial arts club where she accelerated thru the levels very quickly. The club was for profit, charged alot for each test level, and wasn't associated with any regulatory body. The owner arranged for tournaments in other countries and charged even more money. He liked to travel 🤔. TKD is so much fun and there are so many positive gains from it on top of the activity. Enjoy their first test!

I took a class with Sally Melville. When asked how she wove in ends, she turned her sweater inside out. She needed no words… no ends were woven in.

Your videos and chats are so enjoyable, very relaxing. Love the blanket, would a blanket ravelry roulette be fun? Just a thought. I consider myself a crocheter who knits lol. Love both crafts and would love to find a throw blanket to knit. Take care, and thank you

You could do a folded edge then no weaving in ends on the blanket.

I’ve made a similar blanket in crochet as crochet mosaic. It’s the same concept. One color per row. 9:39

An additional color work question for you as I’m currently knitting the halibut sweater; how do you deal with float spots that look like they might be cinched on the front of the work? I do intentionally leave floats relatively long as every colorwork video on RUclips recommends but they still seem fairly tight. Is this something to deal with as it happens, or will those block out in your experience? Great video as always ❤

This is a great question. Usually if you leave wiggle room with your floats, those little puckering spots will block out. Sometimes the yarn is sticky and doesn’t give, despite the slack you’ve allowed with your floats. You could certainly block what you have to see if it will fix the issue. If it does, great. If not, perhaps loosen things up a bit. ❤️👍

For the ends in the flea sweater ... Not sure if this has been mentioned yet but I recently saw someone BRAID them. It was basically a French braid inside the garment and I think she only wove in the last ends at the bottom. Maybe try that and see if you can felt them a little??

I've made 2 mosaic CROCHET blankets before and love the technique. I think that in crochet, it may be a bit thicker. There is a RUclips channel, Tinna Thorudottir Thorvaldar. She is awesome in mosaic crochet and has a way to hide all the ends and no need to weave them in. It's like a double crochet border, and then you just seam them together.

The Slipstravaganza shawl from Stephen West is one that is entirely mosaic or slip stitch and literally no one believes me when I say it is stupid easy! It just is a lot of stitches 🤣

If you do a double border on your mosaic blanket, you don't have to weave in any ends. You hide them in the middle. I haven't looked at that blanket, but if you are adding a border anyway....

Ok I LOVE that cardigan and have been somewhat hesitant because of the colorwork and because I was ignorant to just how AMAZING mosaic knitting is. What an eye opener! 😀🌸
