Why can't "classic" rock stations play something like this other than Born To Be Wild or Magic Carpet Ride over and over and over again?? Great songs but come on Steppenwolf recorded more than just 2 songs!!!
You gotta find yourself some better radio stations. I did a cross-country trip a few years ago and around Kansas City I caught a classic rock station that only played entire albums. I managed to catch Houses of the Holy, Aqualung, Machine Head, and the first side of From the Canteen. Talk about pure joy.
+Mark Burnett Couldn't agree more. You expressed exactly the thought I've had for years about so called "classic" rock radio. The limited rotation of the same few, well known songs or hits by any band or artist. Also I have such contempt for the term classic rock. It was a marketing phrase coined by media ad execs in the early 90s, to appeal to the then slightly older boomer generation, with expendable income. Hence we saw the rise of hundreds of stations aimed at this age group.
I became a Steppenwolf fan in 1968. John Kay's voice was what initially caught my ear at first. However, it was Goldie McJohn's keyboard playing and his unique use of the Leslie that ultimately held my attention.
McJohn was one of the classic rock era's best Keyboard players. Does not get mentioned enough. He is up there with Jon Lord, Keith Emerson, Billy Preston, Rod Argent, Rick Wakeman, Nicky Hopkins, Billy Powell, Ken Hensley, and on and on I could go.
Awesome band!!! John Kay's great!! Saw the band in 1972 and had the privilege of having John Kay stand beside me for about 10 minutes when he was getting a drink. A moment I will never forget..........

Steppenwolf was the real deal, one of the best bands of their time. As so many others have noted, they are vastly underrated. I've been listening to this song for over forty years, it still sounds great. So do they, this is what I wish "heavy metal thunder" had remained instead of what it became.
Classic Steppenwolf sound before Michael Monarch left. His style of lead guitar was short jagged riffs interspersed throughout the song. They lost that with his replacement, Larry Byrom, who was also excellent.

Really? I first heard this song on their greatest hits. I still don't know why this band isn't in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Probably because the song 'Monster' hit the crypto-fascist establishment too close to home. What song was it the B-side for?

Always loved this track. Catchy riff. Michael Monarch is playing on the neck pickup of his guitar, and has his Fender amp cranked -- natural, bright distortion. The rest of the music is cool, too. As another guy here said, Jerry Edmonton's drumming is superb.

For all the great rockin' we had in those days, few stood as tall as Steppenwolf, and none had the political message delivered the way they did either. The political scene, inside as well as outside of that musical genre, was a hot topic that was never far from the grasp of a public that wanted to know as well as understand things going on around them. Steppenwolf embodied the answer to entertainmemt with music that was every bit as much as danceable as it was to just sit and listen. Could we have had the experience in just absorbing the musical content, yes of course, and would we sure did, but the political message in "Monster", "Draft Resister", "Power Play", etc. was one we needed too. How is it that those days in music now seem so far away and yet carry the same weight today? That is an answer still found where it has always been found. Just listen.☮
Hey John, you might like a tune I put up here called Love Me Like a Locust. Hell, just give it a listen. The track is me singing and playing all instruments. All the best, man.

Jerry was an unsung hero of this band. Most people don't pay attention to the drums because of lyrics. The man had some chops. Steppenwolf, my 2nd favorite band of all time depending on my mood.
And it was Jerry's brother Dennis, better known as Mars Bonfire, who penned 'Born To Be Wild' and such other Steppenwolf faves as 'Tenderness', 'Faster Than The Speed of Life', 'The Nightime's for You' and 'Ride With Me Baby'.
I heard or read years ago that Born to be Wild was actually about a kid graduating high school and riding in a Ford Falcon. Anyone else heard that? Heavy Metal Thunder?
No, according to Bonfire in one of his interviews on YT, when his band The Sparrow landed in LA, he got a car and headed for the hills. Whilst driving, a thunder storm came up, thus the thunder in the lyric. Heavy Metal, he says, just came from a category in the periodic table. So there are no hidden meanings. 'Head out on the highway' is just him out in the car.... The song was only referred to as a biker tune after the movie 'Easy Rider', in which it featured, after which all sorts of crazy meanings were assigned to it. I remember when it first came out; it, along with the Amboy Dukes 'Journey to the Center of the Mind' (w/a young Ted Nugent on guitar) was the coolest thing on the radio. @wheelie63 At Your birthday Party is a classic that I also had as a kid. I still love it and Jerry Edmonton was a great drummer in the class of Carmine Appice and John Bonham. He wasn't flashy but he had a killer back beat. May he R.I.P..
I agree. Goldie's sound was awesome. One note tho' is that he actually played a cheap Lowery organ. It's lack of sustain led him to develop his choppy playing style and to turn up the volume. Also key was that his Leslie cabinet had a crack in one it's horns which caused just the perfect amount of distortion! Best rock/blues organ sound ever. And Goldy was a brilliant player!
I have give out love too the drummer in the SteppenWolf Band a he'll of a drummer people. Johnnie 😎😎😎😎 from LosAngles and Pittsburgh got love for the band SteppenWolf.
Yes, they are the best and always will be because they were " revolutionaries" Original artists making a statement with music that is incredible to this date of 2013 Not just some luvey duvey group like the bugs from GB. But a real USA hard core rock band that we all remember to this very day. BIg fan age 60 and still pissed off with the war mongers and profeteers. Too many sons and daughters lost to uneeded disgusting wars.
listen to this song again ( it's great ), and then listen to Black Sabbath "N.I.B.", about 0:42 in...you can see the influence of Steppenwolf in alot of heavy early 70's acid rock
Probably one of the most underated rock n roll bands in history.

@wheelie63 At Your birthday Party is a classic that I also had as a kid. I still love it and Jerry Edmonton was a great drummer in the class of Carmine Appice and John Bonham. He wasn't flashy but he had a killer back beat. May he R.I.P..
Great lyrics, love this song.
Can anything possibly Rock more than this piece of Epic?
I've been listening to this song since I was 15 and I still am not bored with it!
I remember this is the year I turned 16 omfg and Im still playing guitar and inspired thank you jimi for everything.
... no adjectives are appropriate ... all I can say is beyond bloody brilliant !!!
Fuckin'-a it doesn't get better than this.
One of the greatest rock songs ever!!! yOUR FATHER WAS A FIERY WIZARD WHO FLEW AROUND THE SUN!!
I was a GI back in 1970, doing my time in Germany and rocked to this tune while sampling great Turkish hashish. Memories.
There was never an organ sound like Goldie McJohn's B-3 and rattling Leslie cabinet.
I agree. Goldie's sound was awesome. One note tho' is that he actually played a cheap Lowery organ. It's lack of sustain led him to develop his choppy playing style and to turn up the volume. Also key was that his Leslie cabinet had a crack in one it's horns which caused
just the perfect amount of distortion! Best rock/blues organ sound ever. And Goldy was a brilliant player!
A great classic of a classic rock band
Very special sound, very special band. Unique!!
yes but i like since 69 but dont know english lang!
unique sound organ ?yes!

The best Steppenwolf song ever, IMHO. showcases Kay's gravelly deep voice
Seen them in '77 at the Rainbow in OKC.
I have give out love too the drummer in the SteppenWolf Band a he'll of a drummer people. Johnnie 😎😎😎😎 from LosAngles and Pittsburgh got love for the band SteppenWolf.
Man there are 55 dislikes on this. 55 people who have no clue what great music is.
Yes, they are the best and always will be because they were " revolutionaries"
Original artists making a statement with music that is incredible to this date of 2013
Not just some luvey duvey group like the bugs from GB. But a real USA hard core
rock band that we all remember to this very day. BIg fan age 60 and still pissed
off with the war mongers and profeteers. Too many sons and daughters lost to
uneeded disgusting wars.
The first Album i bought back in the Days. Timeless!
my favorite steppenwolf song.guitarist michael monarch was fired
during the recording of this album,he later played with a band called detective
and he was GREAT!!!!
and he wrote this song!
Wore this album out blasting out the walls of my basement.....great great tune!
just saw Steppenwolf two days ago in la and they were great....as bad ass as always!
Another great Steppenwolf classic. Talented musicians.
CLASSIC ROCK RADIO plays the same as it were a payola affair.STEPPENWOLF has more than BORN TO BE WILD, MAGIC CARPET RIDE, and THE PUSHER.
listen to this song again ( it's great ), and then listen to Black Sabbath "N.I.B.", about 0:42 in...you can see the influence of Steppenwolf in alot of heavy early 70's acid rock
This music just ignites something in me, it molest's you're soul and makes you stand up and shimmy and shake. LOVE STEPPENWOLF.
